Mulholland Drive is my favourite film of all time, so that. 2nd place would either be FWWM or The Return, although I'm still processing the latter.

This poll has inspired me to get it together and watch some of the stuff I still haven't seen. I watched Dumbland yesterday, which (rampant swearing aside) would have fit perfectly on Liquid Television. It's actually fairly funny if also completely juvenile and somewhat horrifying. The song of the ants ('when we look at you, we see an asshole') has been looping endlessly in my brain since I heard it.

The stick guy got to me.

I may vote for The Straight Story. I still have only seen two episodes of "The Return."

xpost If it had been filmed rather than extremely crudely animated, the sequence of the man with the stick stuck in his mouth might've been the most horrifying of Lynch's career.

The narrative that 21st century Lynch is the best Lynch has decidedly taken over.

Eraserhead is the only pre-FWWM Lynch film I'd say that I love (although Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man are very good).

But yes, I'd generally agree that 21st C. Lynch is the best.

Find 21st century lynch hits the balance well between his abstracted horror and empathy for the human condition; "Mulholland Drive" and "Inland Empire" are both films that feature Lynch's trademark signifiers but had an emotional landscape that was deeply empathetic and character driven. Enjoy his late work the most

I assume there's some kinda of distribution rights issue, it's always been a pain in the ass to find. I was lucky to score a DVD at a local thridt store (iirc) but it's missing the second disc with all the amusing extra goodies.

I got a bootleg Japanese region free blu ray on amazon like 4 years ago, I still haven't watched it again, actually surprised since I haven't seen it since 2007.

Same here. There was a recent twitter meme on "what's the emptiest movie theater showing you've been to?" and I'm proud to say it was a weekday matinee of IE that god and the universe herself shunned.

Speaking of hard-to-find Lynch things, is On the Air available anywhere in any format? I watched it back in the '90s when it was on local TV, but I haven't come across it since.

istr a few years ago mark frost saying they had been discussing a possible on the hour release, and hinted that they might even be included as a bonus feature on the twin peaks box. Obv didn’t happen tho

Obviously, the pandemic might have changed it all, but did anything ever come from those rumors last year that there would be Twin Peaks news in 2020? Did those fade away or was it just some blu-ray set or new coffee line or something?

Saw Blue Velvet again. It seems like it originated some of the themes that Lynch carried forward in his career - naive protagonists in an idyllic small town discovering the rot underneath, and the obsession with a wholesome 60s aesthetic of classic cars, diners, and teenage apotheosis, offset by a world of sadomasochism, incomprehensibly evil characters, and unnerving scenes
