It was time to redo this, and include Twin Peaks in all its forms ... and just about everything else he directed excluding the commercials and music videos.

Oh good, a few weeks to digest TP:TR before voting.

WilliamC, Monday, 4 September 2017 15:24 (six years ago) link

Or watch it at all.

Inland Empire will win this poll just like it'll win Sight and Sound in 2022.

no wait.... fuck polls, hard.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 September 2017 16:58 (six years ago) link

it's still fwwm but i want to vote for the straight story and the return simultaneously as well

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 4 September 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

FWWM, Return, MD i think

passé aggresif (darraghmac), Monday, 4 September 2017 17:09 (six years ago) link

Voted The Return, would vote for Episode 8 by itself.

devvvine, Monday, 4 September 2017 17:13 (six years ago) link

mulholland, closely followed by Inland Empire and The Return

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 4 September 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

Twin Peaks S2 finale. Would've voted for it if it were on its own. Happy to include the pilot, too.

of the feature films, Mulholland Drive.

flappy bird, Monday, 4 September 2017 21:11 (six years ago) link

Mulholland Drive is my favourite film of all time, so that. 2nd place would either be FWWM or The Return, although I'm still processing the latter.

This poll has inspired me to get it together and watch some of the stuff I still haven't seen. I watched Dumbland yesterday, which (rampant swearing aside) would have fit perfectly on Liquid Television. It's actually fairly funny if also completely juvenile and somewhat horrifying. The song of the ants ('when we look at you, we see an asshole') has been looping endlessly in my brain since I heard it.

The stick guy got to me.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 13:50 (six years ago) link

I may vote for The Straight Story. I still have only seen two episodes of "The Return."

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

xpost If it had been filmed rather than extremely crudely animated, the sequence of the man with the stick stuck in his mouth might've been the most horrifying of Lynch's career.

Pascal's Penisés (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 14:24 (six years ago) link

There are two kinds of people in this world... those who are burnin' to see that stuff between IE and TP:TR, and me.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 14:25 (six years ago) link

So literally everyone else in the entire world is burning to see that stuff between IE and TP:TR.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 14:27 (six years ago) link

I've seen the poll numbers.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 5 September 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link

A point for every film is neat.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 26 October 2017 00:24 (six years ago) link

I think I was the only vote for Blue Velvet, kinda surprised that no one else went for it.

Moodles, Thursday, 26 October 2017 00:27 (six years ago) link

I voted for The Straight Story.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 October 2017 00:37 (six years ago) link

Shocked that original Twin Peaks run only got 2 votes

flappy bird, Thursday, 26 October 2017 00:45 (six years ago) link

I voted for The Straight Story too. Pleased that someone gave Dune a point.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 26 October 2017 01:38 (six years ago) link

IE cracking the top 3 is neat.

Simon H., Thursday, 26 October 2017 01:43 (six years ago) link

Partly my doing, as I opted to forego a vote for the obvious and deserved winner.

Mulholland Drive (2001)	14

Holy shit!

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 26 October 2017 03:33 (six years ago) link

betting that Blue Velvet would have been a second choice for a lot of the other voters there

but it was his second "personal" feature - he absolutely got better at many elements of his craft and art later

The narrative that 21st century Lynch is the best Lynch has decidedly taken over.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Thursday, 26 October 2017 03:42 (six years ago) link

Eraserhead is the only pre-FWWM Lynch film I'd say that I love (although Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man are very good).

Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Thursday, 26 October 2017 04:06 (six years ago) link

But yes, I'd generally agree that 21st C. Lynch is the best.

Winky Carrothers (Old Lunch), Thursday, 26 October 2017 04:07 (six years ago) link

Find 21st century lynch hits the balance well between his abstracted horror and empathy for the human condition; "Mulholland Drive" and "Inland Empire" are both films that feature Lynch's trademark signifiers but had an emotional landscape that was deeply empathetic and character driven. Enjoy his late work the most

Week of Wonders (Ross), Thursday, 26 October 2017 04:14 (six years ago) link

Inland Empire is due for a really sick Criterion reissue

^^ yeah wtf, this is streaming nowhere?

k3vin k., Friday, 7 August 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

I assume there's some kinda of distribution rights issue, it's always been a pain in the ass to find. I was lucky to score a DVD at a local thridt store (iirc) but it's missing the second disc with all the amusing extra goodies.

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 7 August 2020 03:13 (three years ago) link

I got a bootleg Japanese region free blu ray on amazon like 4 years ago, I still haven't watched it again, actually surprised since I haven't seen it since 2007.

flappy bird, Friday, 7 August 2020 04:01 (three years ago) link

I mostly just want to see it on the big screen again one day

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Friday, 7 August 2020 04:31 (three years ago) link

Same here. There was a recent twitter meme on "what's the emptiest movie theater showing you've been to?" and I'm proud to say it was a weekday matinee of IE that god and the universe herself shunned.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 7 August 2020 05:09 (three years ago) link

Speaking of hard-to-find Lynch things, is On the Air available anywhere in any format? I watched it back in the '90s when it was on local TV, but I haven't come across it since.

Tuomas, Friday, 7 August 2020 06:22 (three years ago) link

istr a few years ago mark frost saying they had been discussing a possible on the hour release, and hinted that they might even be included as a bonus feature on the twin peaks box. Obv didn’t happen tho

Obviously, the pandemic might have changed it all, but did anything ever come from those rumors last year that there would be Twin Peaks news in 2020? Did those fade away or was it just some blu-ray set or new coffee line or something?

blatherskite, Friday, 7 August 2020 14:26 (three years ago) link

I think they were just baseless rumours tbh

Rishi don’t lose my voucher (wins), Friday, 7 August 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

Lynch was casting something new in LA pre-pandemic.

flappy bird, Friday, 7 August 2020 19:48 (three years ago) link

two years pass...

Saw Blue Velvet again. It seems like it originated some of the themes that Lynch carried forward in his career - naive protagonists in an idyllic small town discovering the rot underneath, and the obsession with a wholesome 60s aesthetic of classic cars, diners, and teenage apotheosis, offset by a world of sadomasochism, incomprehensibly evil characters, and unnerving scenes
