Aubergine by a landslide

Where the fuck is zucchini what I nominated?

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 10 August 2017 09:20 (six years ago) link

zucchini is a summer squash, so put yer vote there

I could've got behind this as a ballot poll.

Any reason mushy peas are they only prepared veg included?

chap, Thursday, 10 August 2017 09:23 (six years ago) link

Summer squash my ass, I'm voting mushy peas.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Thursday, 10 August 2017 09:29 (six years ago) link

this whole nominations / poll process has been a thinly-disguised attack on noodle vague and tom d's insane assertion that mushy peas are the acme, the ne plus ultra if u will, of veggie goodness, so they kinda need to be included for public shaming purposes

Brilliant, an elaborate vegetable-based shaming. An updated version of the stocks, essentially.

mmmmm vegetable stocks

the tomatoes were in a can

mark s, Thursday, 10 August 2017 10:10 (six years ago) link

Just about everything I cook has tomatoes and onions in it, so I'll vote for the one that is a vegetable. Tomatoes obv.

calzino, Thursday, 10 August 2017 10:29 (six years ago) link

almost otm. the lack of lettuce appreciation surprises me

In what world are even basics- I'm not getting into broccolini for fucks sake- like potato or mushroom 'vegetables'

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:08 (six years ago) link

Write in vote for chicken ffs

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:08 (six years ago) link

Onion wins on versatility alone, lack of garlic here is a scandal.

devvvine, Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:13 (six years ago) link

Too many options it's all bollix there are only about six vegetables

what can i say, ilx contains multitudes, and some of those multitudes don't know what a vegetable is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

for sale: clown shoes, never worn (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:27 (six years ago) link

Write in vote for chicken ffs

chickens grow on the ground rather than on the vine so there's a case to be made imo

I thought I didn't like mushy peas but I think that was based on trying them once when I was very young (probably under 5). Then when we had some in-laws visiting they wanted to try some of our disgusting British food so we had fish, chips & mushy peas and I gave it a go and what do you know, mushy peas are actually delicious. Although not enough that I'm bitterly upset about 35 years of no mushy peas tbh.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 August 2017 11:42 (six years ago) link

Had same experience with mushy peas but put it down to the version I had as a kid coming from a cheap tin whereas now I guess it would be posh stuff.

don't even think of potato as a vegetable tbh tho.

if we were voting non-staple vegetables i might go asparagus

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 10 August 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

Tough choice between tomato (because of the perfect summer tomato sandwich) and onion (because there aren't many non-dessert things I make that don't start with me sweating onion and garlic in some olive oil).

i'd have happily included justin bieber as a vegetable if someone had nominated him tbh

for sale: clown shoes, never worn (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 10 August 2017 15:26 (six years ago) link

chips are beyond reproach, roasties & creamy mash are incredible but only occasional treats. otherwise potatoes are no way near as useful, delicious or versatile as onions or toms, they are the wicked idol of the bland-palated sauce-denying ascetic

Never got around to voting, but quite happy with the broccoli/sprouts/cauliflower/cabbage/cavolo species defeating the potato by 15 votes to 9.

When my food-obsessive Israeli father-in-law got into the low-carb diet, he once went on a deathly serious rant about potatoes, to the effect of "The potato is a KILLER! It is a carb BOMB! NEVER eat potatoes! Never!" The way he pronounced killer "KEE-lehr" still rings in my ears.

Some tardigrades can withstand temperatures down to 1 K (−458 °F; −272 °C) (close to absolute zero) while others can withstand 420 K (300 °F; 150 °C)[12] for several minutes, pressures about six times greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space.[13] They can go without food or water for more than 30 years, drying out to the point where they are 3% or less water, only to rehydrate, forage, and reproduce.
