Newly posted trailer for Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name, my own most anticipated film of the year (read the novel if you haven't).

Columbus is an ace first feature; remarkable superficial resemblance to Museum Hours.

two weeks pass...

so i guess both the Hong Sang-soo films at NYFF are kind of about the coupling (w/ the lead actress) that ended his marriage.

one month passes...

Very much liked Serra's The Death of Louis XIV, both Leaud's expiring king of cinema/France and the unexpectedly clinical payoff. "We will do better next time." (Also didn't recognize the burly cruiser from Stranger by the Lake, Patrick d’Assumçao, as Dr Fagon. That guy's brilliant.)

solid Loach-like Yorkshire farming w/ a gay romance... I will need a home viewing with subtitles on eventually

So it's possible that BPM aka 120 Beats Per Minute is the best thing I've seen all year... and one of the best films in a long time about political activism. I liked Robin Campillo's last, Eastern Boys, but this is tougher, grimmer, sexier. (Everything I've read, and heard from friends about, NY ACT-UP suggests that Paris as depicted here was similar.)

(I didn't know the finger-snapping that Occupy did went back to this, maybe further.)

Arnaud Valois is quite bewitching, isn't he? I loved The Class/Entre Les Murs so I'm really looking forward to this.

What a year for gay movies!

ah Campillo wrote The Class but did not direct it.

He wrote or co-wrote a few Lauren Cantet films.

Valois I don't remember but the actor who plays the other lead, Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, was the kid with the big hair in Glue (2006).

France's AA submission, i hope it gets nominated.

This was good! A literate and tougher Pride. I wasn't as mesmerized by Eastern Boys as a lot of fans.
