Feel like Sherlock Jr. somehow doesn't belong on this list in that it was arguably feature-length for 1924. But then so were the Lumieres.

haha i scanned this list and quickly selected the two I enjoyed the least: number one being Wavelength (an endurance exercise tbh) and the other being the Red Balloon

There's a mess of these I need to see, Partie de Campagne is perfect though, and Simon of the Desert is probably the first one of these I saw and I love it.

It's a weird list - because the Lumiere films are mostly "great" because they were historical firsts, and Sherlock Jr. as mentioned upthread, was really feature film length for its time.

But for me, "A Movie" is the greatest, repping for my homie here.

Meshes or Outer Space at first blush, boo to the absence of The Grandmother.

Write in for Puce Moment, which on somedays is my favorite film period. Another that would be high on my list, Ian Breakwell's The Walking Man Diary, which, unfortunately, doesn't appear to be available online.

Thirding the bafflement at Sherlock Jr, esp as Cops/One Week would be easy substitutions.

Never really thought of Flaming Creatures as a short, though might be conflating it with Pink Narcissus in my memories - 's been a while.

Kubelka's Schwechater is probably the funniest (alongside Duck Amuck).

Is The House Is Black the only non-Euro/Americas film on the list? Mishima's Patriotism/Zhangke's Xiao Shan Going Home/Sembène's Borom Sarret ...

but Elephant is incredible and deserves votes, it's just very difficult to describe a film like that as a "favourite"

Just watched Outer Space for the first time thanks to this thread and people repping for it. What an absolute triumph of technical achievement! I'd like to know more about this guy's history too... It felt like the explication of a full-on psychotic episode. Also the hinting at the existing celluloid worlds/what we can do to liberate them...amazing.

Not sure what to vote for until I've seen some more of these. Agree with Outic about the Kenneth Anger film...it's still great though!

Sherlock Jr is absolutely not a short film, and voting for it is a massive cheat. But fuck it, I'm voting for Sherlock Jr.... Top ten film ever.

exactly once, after a few beers. found myself numb to the death/body shock fairly quickly. striking but obviously not something i'm itching to run back to.

I saw it in college (there was an experimental film class that let anyone in for the screenings), and it left its mark on me, I think in a good way. Hard to explain but I would say I thought about human bodies differently afterwards. **Trigger warning** One image has stuck with me; when they run a scalpel down the person's chest and the skin peels back, exposing yellow fat rather than the red "guts" I was expecting. Also the sawing for brain removal.
