When it was announced sometime in mid-late 2003, and then but somehow also at the same time when it became a hit in Jan-Feb 2004, Debra Messing approached him at an upfront in May of some unspecified year with tears in her eyes and called him Sir, because his TV show that had about 20 million viewers was on the same network as her TV show that had about 20 million viewers.

IIRC, NBC was still doing pretty well then, so if anything The Apprentice hurt them in the long run.

Yeah, The Apprentice was one of those genius moves by Jeff Zucker that prioritized what was cheap and succesful in the short run, while in the end running the network into the ground. It was definitely a succes, but the idea that NBCs 'lineup' was failing in 2003, or that they got better in the next years, is... Well, why even bother pointing it out...
