yea i get this. other eps I'm exploring now are okay, i can't say it warrants a new yorker article though? (although i haven't listened to the episode where they talk about that and it sounds like they also don't think an article was warranted?) again there's shit i've heard on college radio that is basically the same thing as this, sometimes better and sometimes worse. it's bc this is based in brooklyn though huh

any fans of this should also check out Uhh Yeah Dude
oh yeah, UYD is a million times funnier than Chapo, and even though we have a long running thread about it I'm sure half of the grumps around here would hate it

Loved the old Craiglist UYD things but straight comedy podcasts don't do much for me overall.

a good reason for them to keep the just a few handheld mics on a couch format.
uhh yeah dude is two guys in a living room bullshitting, expertly recorded, and the clarity in their voices adds to the intimate and casual atmosphere, rather than detracting from it. it makes it funnier too imo, improves the sense of timing or something. CTH wouldn't have to go into a studio or anything, just buy some decent equipment with that 400K
― sciatica, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 02:29 (seven years ago) link
while we're critiquing the CTH recording fidelity, let me just add that whatever sidechain compression/ducking they're using hurts my ears. peace

If I ever flame out of this industry, I would totally want to do a Chapo style podcast destroying bad professional music writers with Maura and D-40.

Everything I've read about CTH makes me think they're like the nerds tormented by bullies in Massacre at Central High who turn into bullies themselves and get offed by the protagonist in the second half of the movie.

listening to the greatest hits you dudes linked upthread and here i am again thinking these bros aren't funny and their recording methods make these things genuinely unpleasant to listen to

i guess i'm psyched that they target idiots and ether them for like 1.5 hours at a time
People complaining about the audio probably also think the Bowie 'Raw Power' mix is better than Iggy's.

Holy Christ, the latest premium ep is literally them playing Call of Cthulhu for an hour.
And it's the first of two eps.

I was thinking that another reason this is so popular is that almost all "political comedy" (esp on the teevee) tends not to think outside the constraints of party politics

xpost oh boy. One downside of the podcasting boom--it has convinced some people that recordings of their gaming adventures are not just things to be put in shoe boxes for discovery in twenty years when one of the players has just died of Mountain Dew related causes

i'm sure it's grating to many but felix's gorilla mindset schtick always makes me laugh. and matt's genial young marxist professor style rants are always a highlight. i half listened to the most recent ep already and it probably wouldn't hold up to full attention but it had its moments.

i was talking to my only other friend that listens to this and we agreed that the guilty pleasure of it must be kinda like what my dad felt listening to limbaugh
like its obviously kinda lame/bad on a lot of levels, but there is something nice about hearing roasts of the enemy from ppl with something vaguely approximating my political views

my main beef w this pod is that Felix' used to be one of my fav dumb jokes twitters and now he is like, a funny version of Dr Morbius? 100% of the time? and also says angry earnest political things? half of weird twitter had the same political conversion and are determined to relive the '16 dem primary for all of eternity, and I see the success of chapo as perpetuating to ruining my twitter xp. i listened to the first few eps contemporaneously and they were p funny but it felt a bit too navel-gazing and also that listening to podcasts about twitter was not a welcome extension of my internet/twitter addiction. also, ideologically i'm way more aligned with the nebbish centre-left dorks they bully than like, Lee Fang or Adam Curtis (who, i mean, i like his docs but he's always verged on this mind-control meta-conspiracy i don't buy at all--the quote itt was nice, though) or whoever they have on the show, so there was a masochistic dimension to it

there's nothing really particularly noteworthy about this podcast imo but when a new yorker article gets written about some "brooklyn-based x" we definitely need to spend >200 posts arguing about whether x deserves the attention
― marcos, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 19:10 (seven years ago) link
omg ilx podcasting sounds hellish. i have no doubt though that we have numerous posters who could easily make a podcast equal in quality, style, knowledge + perspective to this one. actually depending on who you picked it would probably have more political diversity (and ilx is hardly a bastion of heterogenous thought).
