Governors Awards to Frederick Wiseman, Jackie Chan, Anne Coates, Lynn Stalmaster. All downhill from here.

@NickPinkerton
What if it turns out that the Oscar was *all* that Wiseman was working for the entire time?

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2016 18:45 (seven years ago) link

Well, I've read over and over the last couple weeks that Venice is now a vital part of oscar season, so I guess Lav Diaz is a frontrunner now, huh?

Frederik B, Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

which one?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:42 (seven years ago) link

Nathaniel:

To make things extra confusing Lav Diaz's four hour black-and-white Venice winner is NOT the Lav Diaz film that's one of The Philippine's finalists for their Oscar submission in 2016. The black and white Lav Diaz "movie" (he's really making miniseries, let's call them what they are!) that Philippines might submit this year is The Lullaby of the Sorrowful Mystery which is 8 hours long. (For those who'd like a comparison, last year's Golden Lion went to Desde Alla / From Afar which is Venezuela's Oscar entry this year with the Silver Lion going to Argentina's Oscar entry last year The Clan and the Grand Jury Prize to Anomalisa.)

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 11 September 2016 19:43 (seven years ago) link

(he's really making miniseries, let's call them what they are!)

This is... not accurate in the slightest. His films are structured as one complete narrative and are shown mainly at film festivals, projected in auditoriums; just because they're long doesn't mean they're not movies, conceived and photographed as such (or is this person saying that once a film tips over a certain arbitrary length, it automatically becomes television?)

Foster Twelvetrees (Ward Fowler), Monday, 12 September 2016 09:01 (seven years ago) link

if you're a gay Oscar blogger yes

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 September 2016 10:57 (seven years ago) link

I really want someone to cut From What is Before into a tv-series. The pilot episode would then be half an hour of people walking through forrests. Best pilot ever.

I also really want this discussion to continue until we hid the fifty-answer mark. So anytime anyone went to read up on the beginnings of the oscar-race, they'd read a long discussion of Lav Diaz and long-take aesthetics instead.

Frederik B, Monday, 12 September 2016 13:04 (seven years ago) link

I had a vision of Mysteries of Lisbon cut into NBC-sized slices.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 September 2016 13:07 (seven years ago) link

Ruiz' The Lines of Wellington was one of those that were both film and tv-series at the same time. I honestly thought Mysteries of Lisbon was like that too, but seems I've been mistaken. It would be great on NBC, with commercial breaks!

Frederik B, Monday, 12 September 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

No, wait, rechecked IMDB, Mysteries of Lisbon WAS also a six part tv-series.

“It is a great and wonderful recognition of the work I have been doing for over 50 years,” (Wiseman) said. “What has kept me going is that it is fun and an adventure. Constantly working keeps me off the street, or at least on the streets that I like. I am lucky to have found work that I like and continue to be obsessed with,” he said while also thanking his family. “They recognized long ago that I am a New England Jewish Puritan and let me go my errant ways.”

Finally it was time for what Academy actors branch Governor Tom Hanks called “the man who puts the Chan in Chantastic.” Hanks noted that the two genres Jackie Chan works in – martial arts and action comedies – have been historically under-represented at the Oscars, “but that will change if I have any pull on the Board of Governors.” He described Chan’s work as a mix between John Wayne and Buster Keaton. “How is this possible out of one man?”

And the man himself could not have been more excited on stage last night in his acceptance. “I still can’t believe I am standing here. It’s a dream. A long time ago when I watched the Oscars with my Dad, he said ‘Son, you get so many movie awards around the world. When are you going to get one of these?’ Finally (Academy President) Cheryl calls. I said ‘are you sure?.’ After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally this is mine.” Among fellow action stars in the room rooting him on were Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

Lately they've been reasonably successful getting one (and only one) Huppert-like candidate in best actress. I'd save the concern for Bening or Negga maybe.

Only just caught up with Hansen-Løve's Things to Come (I thought Eden was terrible, so had avoided it up to now). Anyway, excellent movie and Huppert is, again, superb in it - love the moments of comedy, especially with the fat black cat, that undermine both the character and Huppert's high seriousness. Would be great to see her take on a fully comic role (has she ever done this before?)

seems the idea of Moonlight being forever linked with LLL is leaving a funny taste. the post-Oscars Vanity Fair cover, unlike in previous years has a picture of the 2 directors from the 2 films instead of just the one who directed the winner.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:00 (seven years ago) link

I don't care deeply about Moonlight--I liked it--but I agree with the tweet that having to share the cover with La La Land is unwarranted.

clemenza, Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:07 (seven years ago) link

as someone else noted the cover traditionally goes to the directing winner so technically it's LLL that's "sharing" in that case

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 2 March 2017 01:11 (seven years ago) link

That is not what happened. Variety traditionally puts the Best Director winner (in this case, Damien Chazelle) on the morning after cover. Due to the unique and historical circumstances around Moonlight's win (not the flub, just the importance of the movie winning Best Pic I think) they asked Chazelle and Jenkins to do a joint cover. Jenkins himself on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/BandryBarry/status/837045876602241026

@shaehag @Variety There just is absolutely no controversy here. Had La La Land won pic and me director I would have the cover.

People reacting to a very cool/historical and I think good choice to honor Jenkins as well as Chazelle by literally inventing fake news outrage.

I didn't love Moonlight but let's be clear: this is the first outright queer film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. This is a big deal. And a black queer film! I don't expect BP winners to be as pretty good and sometimes excellent as Moonlight often is.

― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius),

Covert not overt. As a film crit colleague wrote today Moonlight is explicitly about a gay character coming of age. Voight is clearly the star of MC, and even though Ratso is clearly coded as gay, Joe Buck's place on the Kinsey scale is more ambiguous.

With a modified card, even if the presenters had gotten the wrong one, none of this would have happened because the presenters would’ve looked at it and one of two things would’ve happened: Their eyes would’ve read “Best Actress” or “Emma Stone.” Reading either of those would indicate that this wasn’t the card for Best Picture, and they would’ve asked Jimmy Kimmel or a producer to the stage to get it corrected.

The card needed to be written and designed in a way that makes it clear to the reader only the essential information.
