Macs TKI honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

Speaking for myself but I can't help but imagine there are many other people like me: the thought of switching to another OS is terrifying/paralyzing. I have used Apple all my life. Used Windows XP when I was in HS but that's it. Ever since his death the company has totally stagnated and failed to invent or introduce anything truly exciting. I use Apple products but I'm not a super fan, like I couldn't care less about the watch. All of their products keep getting worse too, in different ways. But I can't switch.

I still balk at the idea of paying $1k for a friggin' phone. Also don't quite understand the difference in the X tiers
― Nhex, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:29 (five years ago) link
I borrowed one of the fancy new Dell Windows laptops for a week to see if I could get along with it - god, it still sucked so much. All the things I hate about OS X (notifications, handoffs) combined with an absolutely miserable trackpad.
I think I'd be fine with one of the 'pure' Android phones without any of the Samsung overlay bullshit but there's not really any enticement to switch (nor any enticement to switch to a new iPhone, tho).

When my dad died I inherited his almost new iPad, this is the device I find most useless of everything I've owned. The screen's pretty but it's awkward to type on, more awkward to play games on than a phone, uncomfortable to hold for reading books.
Total found uses: drum machine+synth apps, reading comics. For something that probably cost $900 new.
― louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 22:40 (five years ago) link
the apps for music making are a pretty compelling reason to get an iPad, though never for $900 imo... like, anything as much or less than an SP-404 makes sense.

i have to use ipads for work (including keyboard covers) and they're just awkward. they need a flat surface to sit on, the keyboards aren't great at all for typing, and phones do pretty much the same thing most of the time.

I’m on the iPhone upgrade program so I’ll get a new XSMAX. I don’t think I have a need for 512 GB tho. Current have 256 and only use about 100 gigs. I don’t expect I’ll start shooting a lot of 4K video or whatever would fill that up.

Tbf I don’t think they expected this to be a hit with regular people yet, but it’s not going to be a hit with tech nerds in the meantime if there is nothing you can do with it because they make no news apps themselves after launch, and their hostile behavior has driven away the developers they need.

https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/23/apple-cuts-vision-pro-shipments/
Apple has dropped the number of Vision Pro units that it plans to ship in 2024, going from an expected 700 to 800k units to just 400k to 450k units, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.Orders have been scaled back before the Vision Pro has launched in markets outside of the United States, which Kuo says is a sign that demand in the U.S. has "fallen sharply beyond expectations." As a result, Apple is expected to take a "conservative view" of headset demand when the Vision Pro launches in additional countries.

I tried the demo at a store -- the eye tracking and peripheral-free gestures are mind-readingly "this changes everything" magical but yeah, it's so heavy that the thought of watching a whole movie in it immediately felt like a chore.
They'd already separated out a heavy, bulky battery pack -- why not offload the computing hardware and weight itself onto a separate portable computer? they could have made the headpiece lighter and possibly carved out a headless portable mac category for people who don't even care about VR.
If that also helped cut down on development time, they could have released this during the pandemic and likely would have definitively "won" the VR space but maybe having your signature product be emotionally tied to a global catastrophe is off-brand for Apple?
