New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 and onward

Old thread 14k posts so why not

WWDC is Monday, nobody seems to be expecting anything much. Maybe the Keynote will focus on Swift 3. OS X seems likely to get rebranded as macOS. Music on iPhone and iTunes will both change completely once again, infuriating everyone. New watch bands? Jokes about The Car? Does anyone even want a new Apple product at this point? Will Jimmy Iovine be allowed onstage?

when do they announce the new iPhone? i care about that

Spottie, Thursday, 9 June 2016 18:02 (six years ago) link

presumably September like all recent years

two months pass...

Nervous that the next MacBook Pro is going to max out at 1TB with non-replaceable storage. They wouldn't do that to us, right? Because when this thing ships in 2017 I'm going to need more than that.

0 / 0 (lukas), Thursday, 11 August 2016 18:25 (six years ago) link

"1 TB should be enough for anyone." -Apple, probably

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Thursday, 11 August 2016 20:06 (six years ago) link

As usual, my phone is kind of fucked up just in time for the announcement and I'm just trying to make it last. Screen cracked a couple weeks ago, and it's really hard to make it charge.

two years pass...

My partner picked up a new 2018 model 13" MacBook Pro and I'm jealous at a level I haven't dealt with since the Wall Street iteration of the PowerBook G3 finally got it right. My 15" is a goddamn barge and I'm finding that no model of iPad is an adequate travel substitute.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:25 (four years ago) link

i got a 3400c just before that. jealous years.

j., Monday, 20 August 2018 08:20 (four years ago) link

I always thought the Kanga / 3500 / G3 PowerBook was the ultimate in heartbreak. I had a 5300 though, so I know the worst a PowerBook can be.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 20 August 2018 10:06 (four years ago) link

2018 seems like a good vintage of MacBooks to skip. I'm ready to order a 2019 model now, though.

I like my new MacBook Pro but am alternately cursing Apple for cutting HD space / not taking the +$400 hit and getting 1TB like my old laptop (a 2012 MacBook Pro).

Keyboard is fine but the trackpad sucks.

Touchscreen = I can summon emojis.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 04:56 (four years ago) link

I took my '17 MBP in to get the left speaker fixed (apparently this is a thing) and got one of the new keyboards. I missed the press release on this:

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:01 (four years ago) link

yeah glad I got one after that. the SSD is not replaceable?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:04 (four years ago) link

Nope on the replaceable SSD.

I guess I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a fancy new Xs phone but can't make much of a compelling case when my 7 just keeps on going.

Macs TK

I honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 19:11 (four years ago) link

anybody rolling with an external GPU for their intel mac? i am kinda thinking about it to boost x-plane flight sim (and as kind the only way to upgrade my 2018 mini)

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 17 September 2022 06:05 (two months ago) link

I had an external GPU for a couple of years, not really for gaming but just to power a 4k monitor from a 13" macbook… I was never really pleased with the experience, but perhaps for gaming it would be better?

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 17 September 2022 12:02 (two months ago) link

what did you not like about it?

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 17 September 2022 12:36 (two months ago) link

I think, unless you’re getting a great deal on something used, the best performance/dollar ratio solution would be to swap out the mini. At best, the external solutions are good for adding a really beefy GPU to an already powerful system, but ymmv

mh, Saturday, 17 September 2022 14:15 (two months ago) link

yeah i’m starting to think the same thing. the new M1s are so good that they accomplish everything an external gpu would - probably more, actually, because i’d be getting a CPU upgrade as well, for not that much more money.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 17 September 2022 15:12 (two months ago) link

egpu sounds like a nightmare when there's a better option.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 17 September 2022 18:07 (two months ago) link

This seems like very good news. Internals of iPhone 14 redesigned to make it much more repairable:

Alba, Wednesday, 21 September 2022 14:47 (two months ago) link

That is pretty interesting. Also funny they didn't do it with the higher tier 14s, only the low end one.

Nhex, Friday, 23 September 2022 00:22 (two months ago) link

the theories on ifixit (A team, B team or being risk adverse on newer hardware tweaks) seem good

easier repairability on the mainline phone is good

mh, Friday, 23 September 2022 00:29 (two months ago) link

i think i'll try the new airpods as a requested xmas gift

Got the new Airpod Pros. Transparency mode has an unsettling, uncanny quality to it. I keep taking an earbud out to check what I'm hearing against real life.

Also, the recreated ambient noise seems louder than real life to me. You can change this, deep in settings, by turning on partial noise cancellation. Not sure why you can't just turn down the volume on the recreated ambient noise.

I’m about to throw every Apple device I own in the garbage because one of them keeps muting notifications across all of my devices

castanuts (DJP), Monday, 26 September 2022 00:43 (two months ago) link

I have not encountered that, but lol

gotta force sign-out from icloud on all of them maybe and add them back one by one?

reminds me of the hilarious windows auth glitch where I’d have a remote desktop session or something still active on one of many servers, have to change my password, and somehow that session would keep locking me out. when I tested a windows service by running it under my credentials…. boy, it was a real bitch figuring that one out

mh, Monday, 26 September 2022 01:15 (two months ago) link

I lost my AirPods Pro case and am annoyed they don't sell replacements. Having to choose between buying a new third-party one with all the varying reports from people about whether they're any good or not, and a secondhand one on eBay that might itself be a third-party one for all I know.

Alba, Monday, 26 September 2022 07:45 (two months ago) link

v strange they don’t sell those.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 26 September 2022 09:03 (two months ago) link

on the other hand the new lock screen customisations have made my phone look fucking lush.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 26 September 2022 09:04 (two months ago) link

I can't figure them out. I wanted the existing photo I have with the weather on top, but it seems to be one or the other

Alba, Monday, 26 September 2022 09:33 (two months ago) link

It refused to allow me to keep my current photo, I had to create fresh wallpaper to use the new design.

When I couldn’t find (scowling diptych of surly teens 2021) in my roll, I just grabbed (adorable poppets on rail adventure 2013) and threw the widgets and graphics over that and it’s like I have a new phone, albeit one which is deeply nostalgic.

Michael Jones, Monday, 26 September 2022 10:40 (two months ago) link

Yeah I’ve had this problem before with iOS - you can’t seem to retrieve the wallpaper photo from anywhere if it’s not in your Photos library any more. I’ve definitely got this photo on a hard drive but pain to have to find it again. Good to know you can combine photos and widgets though

Alba, Monday, 26 September 2022 14:00 (two months ago) link

Not feeling the lockscreen excitement.

Checked out a youtube on 'coolest os 16 lock screens '. I wonder if half the excitement is in techie-style tweaking of lock screens itself - as I'm not getting much out of looking at them.

Luna Schlosser, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 10:50 (two months ago) link

I set up two different lock screens with work / not work focus modes, which has been a nice life upgrade.

macOS Ventura - Image Capture app enables OCR for PDF creation

Here is a small, well-hidden novelty from Ventura: an OCR option in Image Transfer, Apple’s application for importing photos to your Mac. This offers to transform the text of a scan into an exportable layer that can be more easily extracted on other platforms.

Image Transfer is not only used to recover photos from your iPhone: it also allows you to scan documents, for example using a scanner or a connected printer. By scanning a document via the app, it is now possible to check a new OCR option, which will extract its text in passing.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 21 October 2022 04:22 (one month ago) link

that’s great but i want it to automatically add the OCR text to the file metadata and make that available to spotlight and Photos search

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 October 2022 07:43 (one month ago) link

I think you can do most of that with Shortcuts? I haven't gotten involved with Ventura yet to see what's changed in shortcuts or how addressable OCR / Live Text is. I use a shortcut to remove all metadata from files - I think you can write into those attributes also?

I'm an old man here because I still think in AppleScript/shell script combos. i never found Automator helpful (prob that robot icon)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 21 October 2022 08:31 (one month ago) link

i just want the OS to do the recognition and metadata enrichment on import

Tracer Hand, Friday, 21 October 2022 08:33 (one month ago) link

OCR is awesome when it works!

Personally I am still using my 2007 Macbook at least for Garageband

Guys can i say i am a MASSIVE fan of Stage Manager?? i have it set on the left side of the screen. i have my Dock set to self-hide. so if i need to drag from one app to another i can still do that via the Dock. it plays nicely with Spaces and Mission Control if you use those things. suddenly my computer feel fuckin… Marie Kondoed. elegant. clean. simple. visible. really feels like the first (baby) step outside the flat 2D overlapping desktop window paradigm (for Macs at least)

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 November 2022 10:01 (two weeks ago) link

i mean like all UI experiments some will hate it but it’s extremely.. calming to me somehow.

i’ve hidden my desktop as well, and starting to wonder why it exists at all. there should just be one massive pile (“Downloads” probably) and then anything else you want to create, possibly with the help of Hazel. but Stage Manager isn’t really about files it’s about apps, which makes sense for the app-centric view of the world that Apple’s been pushing ever since the advent of iOS

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 November 2022 10:50 (two weeks ago) link

I had Stage Manager running for a couple of weeks but I was also having huge system slow-downs and I noticed I often had kernal_task using ~1000% cpu in Activity Monitor - possibly this is because I am on an Intel mac and it hasn’t been optimised and bug fixed properly yet.

I did quite like it, although I wish there was an option to open new apps in the current stage rather than always opening a new one. I’ll try it again next time the OS is updated.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 20 November 2022 11:25 (two weeks ago) link

Lol I don’t even use it properly I don’t think. I’m just using it as an app switcher. I’m on an Intel Mini and it seems fine. In fact the whole computer feels a teeny bit quicker. Kind of wild how the windows update in real time in Stage Manager. If there’s an annoying animated ad it will keep plowing along over there.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 November 2022 11:30 (two weeks ago) link

The thing that annoys me most about stage manager is how I couldn’t figure out how to just have the calculator floating in front of my window so I can still see the numbers I’m adding. I ended up getting this app that puts a pop out calculator in the menu bar.

Jeff, Sunday, 20 November 2022 15:52 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah I can see that being annoying. Could you add it to the same “stage” as the thing that has the numbers or something?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 November 2022 17:37 (two weeks ago) link

I tried it but 90% of the time I'm using an external monitor as an additional display and stage manager requires each display to have separate spaces which kind of breaks my whole workflow

joygoat, Sunday, 20 November 2022 19:52 (two weeks ago) link

that’s dumb if you’ve extended your desktop

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 November 2022 20:25 (two weeks ago) link

Was like "what is this Stage Manager thing?" Then realized my iMac just got dropped for support. I guess Apple is not so subtly nudging me to get a new computer...

Nhex, Sunday, 20 November 2022 22:32 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah I have no idea what it is either
I need fewer screens in my life, not more
