New Apple Lust Objects for 2010 and onward

Old thread 14k posts so why not

WWDC is Monday, nobody seems to be expecting anything much. Maybe the Keynote will focus on Swift 3. OS X seems likely to get rebranded as macOS. Music on iPhone and iTunes will both change completely once again, infuriating everyone. New watch bands? Jokes about The Car? Does anyone even want a new Apple product at this point? Will Jimmy Iovine be allowed onstage?

when do they announce the new iPhone? i care about that

Spottie, Thursday, 9 June 2016 18:02 (four years ago) link

presumably September like all recent years

two months pass...

Nervous that the next MacBook Pro is going to max out at 1TB with non-replaceable storage. They wouldn't do that to us, right? Because when this thing ships in 2017 I'm going to need more than that.

0 / 0 (lukas), Thursday, 11 August 2016 18:25 (three years ago) link

"1 TB should be enough for anyone." -Apple, probably

Your Favorite Album in the Cutout Bin, Thursday, 11 August 2016 20:06 (three years ago) link

As usual, my phone is kind of fucked up just in time for the announcement and I'm just trying to make it last. Screen cracked a couple weeks ago, and it's really hard to make it charge.

two years pass...

My partner picked up a new 2018 model 13" MacBook Pro and I'm jealous at a level I haven't dealt with since the Wall Street iteration of the PowerBook G3 finally got it right. My 15" is a goddamn barge and I'm finding that no model of iPad is an adequate travel substitute.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 20 August 2018 07:25 (one year ago) link

i got a 3400c just before that. jealous years.

j., Monday, 20 August 2018 08:20 (one year ago) link

I always thought the Kanga / 3500 / G3 PowerBook was the ultimate in heartbreak. I had a 5300 though, so I know the worst a PowerBook can be.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 20 August 2018 10:06 (one year ago) link

2018 seems like a good vintage of MacBooks to skip. I'm ready to order a 2019 model now, though.

I like my new MacBook Pro but am alternately cursing Apple for cutting HD space / not taking the +$400 hit and getting 1TB like my old laptop (a 2012 MacBook Pro).

Keyboard is fine but the trackpad sucks.

Touchscreen = I can summon emojis.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 04:56 (one year ago) link

I took my '17 MBP in to get the left speaker fixed (apparently this is a thing) and got one of the new keyboards. I missed the press release on this: https://www.wired.com/story/apple-will-fix-broken-macbook-keyboards/

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:01 (one year ago) link

yeah glad I got one after that. the SSD is not replaceable?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 05:04 (one year ago) link

Nope on the replaceable SSD.

I guess I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a fancy new Xs phone but can't make much of a compelling case when my 7 just keeps on going.

your new laptop should have that functionality built in!

yeah it's not nearly as good though, fluctuates too much, way too much blue at night. maybe i can monkey with the settings and/or just get used to it. apparently f.lux is working on a fix.

Macs TK

I honestly feel nothing for any products Apple makes these days, I’m not mad or anything it’s all just at a stable equilibrium and design differentiators are basically impossible, since all anyone wants is things built on the same lines as the products Apple introduced 2003-2007. They are still dragging their heels on a MacBook based on an Apple-designed ARM SoC and that irritates me a bit.

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 12 September 2018 19:11 (one year ago) link

Shit, maybe I better grab one before it's too late. My 5s will be 5 years old in December. xp

I agree from a developer standpoint and as someone who generally uses new apps, but the #1 complaint for most people is “my program that I bought no longer works and I don’t know why”

kind of a hard balance between “things should just keep working” and “apps need to be updated to be modern in regards to platform/security/etc”

I’m generally on board with the second because oh boy remember what a mess Windows became when everyone wanted to run their apps from eons ago on every new Windows version

j., Monday, 22 June 2020 15:22 (two weeks ago) link

this has definitely become less of an issue over time now that virtualization and emulation have gotten better!

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 22 June 2020 15:30 (two weeks ago) link

and, iirc, now macs have been on intel longer than they were on powerpc

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 22 June 2020 15:32 (two weeks ago) link

yeah but powerpc didn't feel like going over to the ENEMY it felt like a cool new superboost

j., Monday, 22 June 2020 15:34 (two weeks ago) link

ah yes, the weird apple cult thing where processors from motorola/ibm (!) were magic

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 22 June 2020 15:37 (two weeks ago) link

there were some genuine perks of powerpc at the time but the idea that any component that deviated from standard Windows boxes was part of the “apple magic” was always a weird take imo

solo scampito (mh), Monday, 22 June 2020 15:41 (two weeks ago) link

A Mac Pro on a many-core POWER9 sure would be something tho huh?

macs will now properly run iOS apps. woah

hmmm. depends on how the app is designed, right? even something as basic as a swipe gesture is going to be annoying if you use a mouse.

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:20 (two weeks ago) link

(I know you meant something different by "properly" I'm just leery of running handheld apps on a desktop)

lukas, Monday, 22 June 2020 20:23 (two weeks ago) link

they did completely breeze past the swipeyness, but modern iPad OS lets you use an external pointing device with a cursor to swipe, so I'm assuming anything that supports that is good

the X always stood for 10!

Mac OS X -> OS X (with 10.8) -> macOS (with 10.12 aka Sierra)

it always seemed dumb to put the X along with 10.whatever because “Mac oh ess ten, ten point one” didn’t quite roll off the tongue but the Roman numeral X looked cool I guess

a return to sanity, even if major version updates now apparently mean “we’re switching architectures”

solo scampito (mh), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 00:16 (two weeks ago) link

And so it comes full circle, my first computer was and acorn electron and now my Mac architecture will be descended from an Acorn chip. Although not until V2 of the hardware comes, mind you it basically means whatever computer I have will be an iPad under the hood.

no official word about the order in which the various mac lines will get ARMs right?

normally i'd assume MBP and iMac first but with the reduced power consumption ... maybe MBA?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 05:14 (two weeks ago) link

all cats are beautiful (silby), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 05:45 (two weeks ago) link

mba seems a good fit, sounds like imac and mbp will be first

pedant in me is irritated at headlines implying apple has released a mac mini with the new architecture when it’s a dev kit that apple will recall at the end, it’s invite-only, and it’s not production hardware

solo scampito (mh), Tuesday, 23 June 2020 15:17 (two weeks ago) link

if they made an MBA with a touchscreen to accompany the newfound iPadOS app capability then I would probably buy one immediately.

stet, Thursday, 25 June 2020 22:21 (one week ago) link

I really really like my ipad pro, and basically just want it to have a slightly better processor, a real keyboard, and to stand up by itself. I want to keep the touchscreen but I also want a touchpad for more precision when using certain apps

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Friday, 26 June 2020 01:34 (one week ago) link

Touchscreens on phones and tablets: reassuringly solid glass (or glass-ish), no flex, can obviously withstand any amount of jabbing, swiping and smearing. Often water-resistant. Easy to clean.
Touchscreens on laptops (in my limited experience): I feel like I'm ruining the screen.

I guess it would make laptops unacceptably heavy to install the same sort of display surface as a tablet? I dunno, maybe they're better now.

GF has a Lenovo Yoga 360. She very gingerly brushes the screen to select/scroll, mostly uses the trackpad and has never flipped it all the way over. I'm not sure we quite believe we won't break it :)

Michael Jones, Friday, 26 June 2020 09:45 (one week ago) link

that seems oddly sexual but hey it’s the Apple thread and Lenovo called their thing a Yoga so all bets are off
