I feel like this used to be more of a big deal in the press than it is nowadays? there are a lot of coronation street actors here. as far as I can tell, everyone who has ever won a rear of the year award is still alive as of 10/5/2016

50 poll option limit meant that I had to exclude Barbara Windsor (who won a one off award in 1976, before it became a regular event) and the 2015 winners Kym Marsh and Daniel Radcliffe

apparently James Crossley aka "Hunter from Gladiators" won the award alongside Tracy Shaw in 1996, but doesn't seem to be listed on the official site for some reason?

voted charlotte church, who was named rear of the year when she was 16, in the hope that the uk can build on this foundation and become internationally renowned as a country of ephebophiles instead of paedophiles

I hadn't occurred to me that Church would have been that young in 2002, the website is not coy about pointing it out either

She was sweet sixteen at the time – the youngest recipient of the annual Rear of the Year award. Three years later, in 2005, she swapped her ‘Voice of an Angel’ image and singing style for a more raunchy ‘pop’ style.

oldest winner was Carol Vorderman, aged 53 in 2014 when she became the first person to win twice, and there does seem to be a general trend for older winners over the last few years. Jennifer Ellison in 2008 was the last female recipient to be under 30 at the time of winning.

Amazed that Pippa Middleton didn't win in whatever year her sister got married, since her arse was a permanent fixture in the tabloids for months.

the process by which the winners are selected seems kind of murky (though you can cast a vote for any uk celeb on the website), I'm guessing that they make sure the winner is someone willing to do the photoshoot, wear the sponsored jeans etc, maybe Pippa didn't fancy it

Really odd list but I don't know a lot of them. Maybe people were really just voting for their favourite celebrities.

That whole Pippa Middleton thing was confusing too.

I don't watch much television these days but even when I watched it all the time I'd struggle to think of anyone.

Nigella Lawson and Esme Bianco (main prostitute from Game Of Thrones), nobody else springs to mind.

funny to think, much like the old Page 3, this sort of thing just doesn't fly in the U.S., and nominating a 16 year old only takes it light years further out of our wheelhouse

For blokes of a certain age, it's always going to be Felicity Kendall. The whole thing was probably dreamed up to justify giving Felicity Kendall an award for a lot of men looking at her arse a lot.

I recognise every single name on this list, which is quite a sad reflection on my continuing knowledge of zeitgeists past.

Still lolling at Su Pollard. Assume no-one else was contacted to take part.

americans who feel that they are missing out can take part in rear of the year competitions in second life:

Here are a few guidelines for the competition:
...You may participate if you are 18 or older and have a female avatar.
...You should be at least partially clad. No full nudity, please!
...You will be asked to present for a short time on our stage. You may
either use your own animations or those we provide.
...You understand that you are being demoted to a sexual object.
...You should bring a bathrobe, it can be chilly behind the stage and
we take no responsibility for ensuing colds.
...You should have a sense of humor!

Beauty contests (parades/pageants) are invisible and meaningless in the UK, whereas I get the impression they're still quite a thing in the USA? Rear of the Year and similar is a Brit substitute - a slightly more coy (repressed) 'excuse' to gaze at female bodies

Chicamaw (Ward Fowler), Tuesday, 10 May 2016 20:02 (eight years ago) link

beauty contests were a holiday camp staple, right? maybe this kind of thing appeared as they faded away. feel that its continued existence and tabloid prominence indicates something obscure yet essential about british identity

The only person I know who has won any of these beauty contest things in recent years is Danielle Lloyd, and that was only because she then started going out with Teddy Sheringham (who was judging it) amid some tabloid controversy (and then went on to even more tabloid controversy of her own). Other than that, I wouldn't have known Miss UK or whatever was even still a thing.

ailsa, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 20:38 (eight years ago) link

Lol Sheringham was such a loathsome twat

obv the Americans are way above this kind of thing apart from cheerleaders, the popularity of Benny Hill repeats and their plan to "Fantastic Voyage" style send a microscopic camera crew right up a Kardashian's arse by 2020
