what year were your grandparents born?

i was thinking about this after a conversation with my dad, talking about my grandfather/his dad. i never met him, he died in 1963 after minor surgery at the age of 63 (born in 1900, my dad was born in 1946.) i then asked my dad when HIS grandfather (his dad's dad) was born. he was born in 1860. which i realize makes perfect sense but it's still amazing to think my dad is a guy (and not THAT old, he just turned 70) whose grandfather was born before the civil war began.

anyway, got me to thinking about connections to the past and all that.

so my grandparents were born in 1900, 1911, 1918, and 1920. my great grandmother on my mom's side was born in 1890, and then there's the fella from 1860.

Paternal: 1924 and 1927 (I think I narrowed it down, grandma lied about her age a lot)

My mother's parents were born in 1920 and 1924; my dad's mother was born in 1909, but I have no idea when his father was born. Never met him, as he ran out on the family when my dad was 13.

my grandparents all passed away, though they had pretty good runs. they were all a bit older when they had my parents. i've been fortunate to spend time with my wife's maternal grandparents who are both still alive at age 95 and have been married since 1940. it's like a bonus third set of grandparents and it's great. wish i saw them more tbh.

my paternal grandfather was from rural chile and his birth wasn't registered until 4 years after he was born, think he was born 1924 and registered 1928. he used this registration date as his birth date - which was his real birthday but 4 years subsequent to his actual year of birth - his entire adult life and pretended to be 4 years younger than he was out of vanity. this fake birthday appears on his grave. everyone in the family knew his real age.

I'm lucky that I still have four living grandparents, but I really should spend more time with them while they're still around...

i'm guessing now - maternal grandmother 1913, maternal grandfather i'd say 1900 or earlier. paternal grandmother 1920ish, paternal grandfather the same.

all dead. never knew the grandfathers, both died before i was born in late 70s or early 80s. maternal grandmother died in 96, paternal grandmother a year or two ago.

Read that as, "... both died, i was born in late 70s or early 80s".

Not entirely sure, but maternal grandparents almost certainly in the 1930s.

Paternal grandparents I don't know, my biological father was a year younger than my mum so probably about the same. My stepdad is over a decade older than my mum and was the youngest by far of his siblings (like ten years younger than the next youngest?) so I would imagine his parents were born around the turn of the century if not before? Which seems crazy to me.

I am interested in things like this but I never think to ask about family history, or when I do I feel uptight about asking the wrong thing or being a bad family member because I should know already.

Dad's parents: 1908 (grandfather), 1910 (grandmother).
Mother's parents: 1913 (grandfather), 1919 (grandmother).

My mother's parents were both children of immigrants: grandfather Swedish, grandma Polish/Canadian. My dad's parents were from more established families - his dad's family were protestant Northern Irish/Anglo-Irish, his mother's were French Huguenot. Last of these to go: paternal grandmother, 1991.

I'd like to hear of any unusual items in your lineage.

I said while ago my grandfathers were 1906 and 1929. Pretty obvious age difference there . But 1929's parents were born in 1908 and 1914, meaning that one of my grandfathers was even older than my other side's great-grandparents.

And yeah, had I not waited around until I was 33 and instead had my first kid in my 20s, could've had five generations born in the 20th Century.

maternal grandmother = 1925, grandfather = 1917 (both deceased)
paternal, I have no early idea anymore...but I believe they were born in the 1910-1920 timeframe. also both deceased.

great grandmother on mother's side was born in 1898, but there was always a dispute on the date. she died at 94, lovely woman.

I just found out from my mother that she'd had an older sister who died before she was born. Just slipped into the conversation like it was nothing. Old people are weird. She also told me, which I never knew either, that my maternal grandfather was 11 years older than my grandmother, meaning he was born in 1899. He ran away with another woman when my mother was about 10 and instantly became persona non grata in the family. My great grandmother threatened to attack him with her umbrella if she ever saw him in the street. The family only found he'd died when my grandmother's next door neighbour read in the newspaper about his body being found, having been lying dead for weeks. Don't get me started on my paternal grandparents.

This is the same grandfather who, during World War Ii, formed a close harmony singing trio with two women and used to tour the back courts of Glasgow literally singing for his supper.

My maternal grandparents had low parenting standards, they would just elope for weeks and leave the kids to fend for themselves. Hence my mother and siblings getting caught breaking into a Bakery in Kilbrew and ending up in the care of the Christian Brothers famously kind industrial schools.

There is so much intrigue in my family I long stopped trying to keep track of it. I have a half sister and an uncle fathered by the same bloke, and my mum has multiple other siblings she has never met, it best to not even to start trying to unravel the whole thing.

Maternal GF - 1932-1992
Maternal GM - 1938-
Paternal GF - 1934?-2012
Paternal GM - 1936- (I only know this because I heard she just turned 80 a few weeks ago)

Quite boring lineage, they're all from the same town or just outside it. My PGM has some Irish blood but you have to go back a couple of generations. I was told it was still v controversial that she got together with a protestant though.

for those of you who aren't sure about the exact birthdates, you can find a lot of vital records on familysearch.org. the quickest and easiest way to find a birthdate for an American relative is to look them up in the Social Security Death Index, although this doesn't account for people who lied about their age to claim benefits earlier in life. also some censuses give a person's month and year of birth, and birth and baptismal records are available for some jurisdictions.

(I found out that my Italian immigrant great-grandfather was probably born in 1894 rather than 1890, but I'm not sure why or when he went with the latter date)

I'm in kind of the same boat as emil.y — interested in my family history but afraid to ask for fear of inciting awkwardness (and tbf census-digging is a poor substitute for actual oral history from the people who lived it)

My great-grandma on my mom's side was born in Italy, 1890. She died in 1982 when I was fourteen. Dad's parents were born in Ireland in 1902 (M) and 1908 (F). Mom's parents were both born in 1916, and grandma died in 2014 at the age of 98. She drive a car until she was 96.
