This may be a bit of a surprise to those of us couch-locked for Game of Thrones rewatches, Better Call Saul marathons and Pretty Little Liars binges, but there's a whole rest of the world out there, and it has the TV bug too.So what's the most-watched television series in the whole world? The Monte-Carlo Television Festival and number crunchers Eurodata TV Worldwide think they know. The two organizations handed out the International Television Audience Award, which recognizes the television show that has the highest viewership in the world, and for the third time in four years the honor went to CBS' NCIS. According to CBS, over 47 million viewers worldwide watched NCIS in 2016.

I bet it's just people leaving the tv on after they've fallen asleep.

Game of Thrones is much bigger than Breaking Bad isn't it?
I mean, by the end, BB was pretty well known but GoT seems to be on another level. My Mum has heard of it for one thing and it's watched by people in work who usually only watch the likes of Celebrity Big Brother and Love Island.
― groovypanda, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:18 (six years ago) link
yeah it is easily the biggest of all these serials as far as i can tell.
― Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link
Breaking Bad started very small and by the end finally became a thing, albeit on a small scale. GoT started pretty big and has been getting bigger each year, too:
http://static2.businessinsider.com/image/596b7dbf552be5c2088b4bdd-1200/game-of-thrones-charts-live-same-day.png
But a big difference is that GoT isn't terribly ... cool? That's the only reason I can explain (anecdotally) seeing Breaking Bad related t-shirts and merch and stuff around but nothing GoT related (yet).
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link
it should be noted that appearing on t-shirts and merch and stuff is what makes something officially uncool

since everything sucks, i would imagine that soon after GoT ends we'll hear about the upcoming star wars/marvel/disney style expansion of the series with many many spinoffs, movies, tv shows, cartoons, and pornos. basically just pick a random spot on this map that you nothing about and set it 600 years before the events of GoT and you have a television series that will be profitable

― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link
i don't know where in the world you'd be seeing BB shirts and merch and not GoT, the latter is everywhere.
― nomar, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link
i can see a "superhero" film, maybe one of those "Thor" movies, in which you'll see an "easter egg" for GoT fans. a white walker or a dragon hanging out in the background of a scene.
― nomar, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link
that continent at the bottom right with all the trees? that's in northern canada. in 2026 there will be a short-lived FX cop procedural set it Toronto involving some of the descendents of iron islands
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:30 (six years ago) link
I still see lots of Los Pollos Hermanos and Heisenberg shirts and stickers and stuff like that. I'll keep an eye out for GoT stuff.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link
Only people I see wearing GoT stuff are basic tourists in times square. Only people I see where BB stuff are basic teenagers and 20-somethings everywhere, and cars with heisenberg bumper stickers. Def more BB merch where I find myself.

The map is so unimaginative. He wrote a story about people that are north and south of each other, so it's just this pillar that caters to that exact relationship. Then when he thinks about Dany's journey from across the see and way out east... let's see here's some water separating the two (check) and here's a big long log shaped landmass that extends to the east (check). Perfect!

― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 September 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link
I see way more GoT throne t-shirts than Breaking Bad t-shirts. It's not even close.

if you're talking about Meow Wolf, and the House of Eternal Return, yeah, that's Santa Fe. he's also got his own movie theater up there (which is really good!)

It's way worse than that. Westeros is basically just a mirrored version of Britain.

what...what formation of landmasses and sea would be sufficiently imaginative?

Maybe Breaking Bad just didn't have the same impact here as it did in the states, I dunno. Game of Thrones is about as popular as I've ever seen any television show get.

It's a big wonky L shape that to me doesn't feel like anything but conveniently supplementary to the characters and their dichotomy. Too easy to draw in excel! There's plenty of more organic map shapes from other fantasy stories or games etc. GoT one just seems lazy to me. I'm a dork about maps and settings.

The GoT world map kind of reminds of medieval-era world maps where some places are pretty detailed while other more far away places are a combination of approximations and guesswork which results in big blocky continents. Something like this:

There must be some dumb 'where in Game of Thrones world would you like to be from?' quiz out there. I'd probably go with Tarth - warm yet detached. Or Dorne because it has a place called Planky Town.

GoT merch and stuff is all over etsy, like you can probably find a t-shirt that says in GoT font, "Mother of" just about every dog breed you can think of. zulily.com had a themed shop of women's fashion that was inspired by GoT ... granted, I don't personally see anyone wearing it, but I also don't see pro-Trump signs/merch where I live either.
― sansa riff (sarahell), Thursday, 7 September 2017 09:42 (six years ago) link
Obviously I know the stuff *exists*. Everything exists on the internet. Just like you, I've not seen anyone wearing it, but unlike Donald Trump, Game of Thrones is not a regional phenomenon. You'd think something of that level of popularity and cultural prominence would be a bit more visible outside of HBO promos.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 September 2017 11:48 (six years ago) link
Definitely see more BB t-shirts than GoT, but more people have GoT action figures, bobble-heads, board games etc. I think it's the types of merch the shows' different genres lend themselves too more than anything. I'd say GoT is more popular overall - BB feels like more of a cult, albeit a very large one.
― chap, Thursday, 7 September 2017 12:13 (six years ago) link
It's because BB is cool and people could feasibly pull off a Los Pollos Hermanos t-shirt or whatever whereas wearing a GoT t-shirt immediately makes you look like a massive nerd.
No question that GoT is the bigger international phenomenon.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 7 September 2017 12:33 (six years ago) link
We weren't able to make our annual pilgrimage to the local Renaissance Fair this year, but when we went last year I was surprised at how little Game of Thrones stuff I saw. Or at least, how little explicitly Game of Thrones-y stuff I saw. (Most of the stuff is implicitly Game of Thrones-y.) But yeah, I didn't even think of action figures and bobbleheads and the things people collect. I'm sure that stuff proliferates, but more privately.

I thought it would be like Marvel t-shirts, pretty much anyone will wear them unless they really don't like the stuff.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link
I think Marvel/comic book shirts have (frighteningly?) shifted over to simply being in fashion. Like, Captain America shields, like the Superman S? Just icons that people like on shirts, like an alligator or polo player or something. I'm not sure what kind of GoT shirt people could rock that wouldn't look like some tacky white camo with howling wolf against a snow capped mountain shirt.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:31 (six years ago) link
The sigils would make good t-shirts especially House Onion.
― nashwan, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:34 (six years ago) link
Marvel t-shirts I see ordinary people wearing most are the ones with 60s-70s-80s art.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 7 September 2017 13:44 (six years ago) link
people who wear Los Pollos Hermanos shirts probably have a lot of crossover w/people who are into The Chive.
