was in the supermarket last year around this time and wondered why all the young kids were buying boxes and boxes of eggs. they couldn't all be having omlettes for tea could they?

actually actively hate fancy dress
yes i enjoy drawing pumpkins and witches and such with my niece, so i guess i'm not quite childless in this regard
also i find the notion of a parentally chaperoned mischief night amusing

Anyone who lets society restrict them to a single day when it's acceptable to dress up like a poop emoji is a damn coward.

I don't remember snow on Halloween being a thing until recently. But in the last several years I can recall multiple instances (including today) wherein Halloween marked the first snowfall of the year. That's for sure a big fat DUD afaic. JUST WAIT LIKE ONE FRICKIN' DAY, STUPID WINTER.

My first Halloween in Chicago, 1993, it snowed several inches.

Fucking Classic for having an excuse to watch umpteen horror movies.
I watched Rob Zom's Halloween for the first time last night, thought it was pretty good.
― Ste, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:49 (eleven months ago) link
The last time it snowed here on Halloween, 2019, there was enough that the ground was covered by the time trick or treaters came around.

feeling old because i'm exhausted by this? everyone stop saying 'spooky season'. every store stop putting up halloween displays the day after labor day (i.e. the first monday in september, for non-yanks). liking shitty horror movies is not a personality. LEAVE AUTUMN ALONE

Ah, sorry, forgot who I was talking to
There was a pumpkin sitting on the bar, competing for space with the stacked empty glasses. The bartender moved it and said she would replace it. After her shift.

I mean autumn is the best season but halloween is like a celebration of everything that rules about autumn including the sad parts you've got to strike the right balance between Irish halloween traditions and some Samhain stuff and sophomoric yank lunacy

this is the meteorological calendar I would ideally want:
summer - 10 mos/yrhalloween - 3 mos/yrsledding - 2 weeks/yr
retail is crazy (plz stop putting out xmas stuff the day after halloween) - September is too early for halloween I agree! b/c September is for pretending it's still august imo (sorry mookie)
― Deflatormouse, Saturday, 28 September 2024 01:54 (six days ago) link
I'm half with mookie and I fuckin LOVE Halloween. but Halloween is not the Spirit store opening, or Halloween candy for eating when it's still ninety-plus outside. Halloween deserves the turn of the season, that's part of it. people in shorts & tanks are inherently unspooky except in a very non Halloween way. 10/1 should be the kickoff by law and I'd be cool with pushing that to 10/7. we don't need two months for halloween, it spoils the fun of it

math class - 0 mos/yr

having spent almost a decade working in bookstores i at least appreciate that halloween, unlike christmas, doesn't involve six weeks of specialty music

yeah I wanted to do a horror soundtracks ballot poll for October tbh but I'm gonna be way too busy with the coven etc
you liken the transition between seasons to the lifting of a veil - that time is halloween & that is the thing in the world I most want to celebrateit's transitory - it has to be - but I wish I could stay there a while longer

oh i have a killer halloween playlist -- you're even on it for 'damn these vampires' and 'werewolf gimmick'
but it doesn't involve me having to listen to any vaguely christmassy shit at work for weeks on end. this is a union issue!
