is reality more real than the really real now

would not 'truly free' capitalism allow for monopolies? eliminate child labor laws? absolve environmental disasters? where is the line drawn? who draws it and who would 'interpret' it?

are there any other pop songs that rhyme "sandals" with "candles"? I feel like there must be, but I can't think of one.

I've always had problems with heights and even working on tower scaffolds and scissor lifts for over a decade never really cured it. Fucking love terra firma, man.
Once I was told not to leave site until I had got a chandelier cable to the apex of a church dome before the painters came in that weekend. it involved going up an illegal tower scaffold built onto the top of a big scaffolding structure with lots jutting steel poles that would skewer you if fell. One of the painters felt sorry for me and said gimme your drill I'll do it. He did an absolute abortion of a job, fucking etch-a-sketch type wiring. I told him thanks but it was fucking dog rough and I'll probably get pumped for this on Monday, but at least I'm alive!
He said "wait until it has been painted, you won't notice it". When I returned on monday it still looked fucking pez with a layer of paint and I got a massive fucking and it actually ruined my reputation at that company. But I'm still glad I didn't do it.

My view on the identity/class divide is that both sides are equally planks that complement each other and the left should try, as much as possible, to unite.

it's wordplay

Mordy, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 00:46 (seven years ago) link

kitty genovese's murder inspired the idea of the bystander effect; accounts at the time claimed that none of the many people who could hear her screaming did anything because they didn't want to get involved or assumed someone else would help her

identity politics rooted in tolkienism (darraghmac), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 00:50 (seven years ago) link

furthermore, the joke implies that instead of considering the seemingly doomed course of us history, one might focus on other things besides, hence acting as bystander to cultural and social death on an unprecedented scale

It hinges on knowing who Kitty Genovese was.

Mark G, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 06:52 (seven years ago) link

it's wordplay

is the implication here that it's to do with Irish pronunciation of "third world"

diary of a mod how's life (wins), Wednesday, 23 November 2016 10:00 (seven years ago) link

Pronounced 'Trócaire' iirc.

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 10:10 (seven years ago) link

Some of you not immediately knowing who Kitty Genovese was is forgivable, but not bothering to look her up on your own only adds to the punchline.

pplains, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 14:09 (seven years ago) link

In fairness the need to research an entry on the Excelsior thread is somewhere in the sub-basement of my pyramid of needs.
