do you still mix with your aunts?

I still talk to one every few months. She's over eighty, intelligent, independent and interesting, and never lectures me, just talks with interest and affection, much like a friend. The only other living one, I've not talked to in many years - a silly old woman. My favourite, an extraordinary, brilliant woman (she left me her backgammon set, a present from King Faisal, on which we had played a lot; she had also played with Omar Shariff, among many others; English was her fourth language, but she completed the Times crossword every day), died horribly from multiple sclerosis years ago.

Aunts Tory and Cheryl are both doing well and I've talked to the former last at Christmas and the latter last year. Always liked 'em both, and I have one of Tory's paintings as a present.

Tory? That's a vicious insult (even after centuries of reclamation) this side of the Atlantic, Ned.

Tory = short for Victoria. I have no idea what you barbarians use it for. ;-)

Exactly! The word 'Victoria' is a nasty insult. You'll note that Mrs Beckham was always known as Posh Spice until she pissed off millions of jealous Brits by marrying David Beckham, then had that horrible epithet applied.

I have 5 aunties and 3 aunties through marriage. My mum is very close to her sisters and I always find it strange when people talk about seeing their aunties like once a year, it makes me sad, my aunties are very good to me.

The last aunt I spoke to finished the conversation by saying "Let's go out and get drunk soon," but then she is only 32 and closer to my age than my mothers and I suppose falls more into a cousin type.
