Yes! I absolutely get IA at people who back into spaces.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 6 December 2018 02:19 (five years ago) link

Some places most people back in (Hawaii, asian countries).

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 03:12 (five years ago) link

Is that in parking lots or on the street (parallel parking)?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:12 (five years ago) link

Parking lots (google hawaii backing into parking spaces). In most places in the US you can't park backwards (ticket) on the street/parallel?

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:16 (five years ago) link

I was thinking parking lots too, did not know that about Hawaii.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:27 (five years ago) link

You also have to back buses into spaces.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 04:34 (five years ago) link

also in countries where you have to be able to drive in order to drive

puppy bash (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 December 2018 08:28 (five years ago) link

I only learned to drive this year and was only told how to back into a space, in fact the instructor led me to believe this is the 'proper' way to do it. Maybe because it's on the test? I have the feeling that going in forwards gives you difficulties getting to the curb somehow?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 6 December 2018 09:51 (five years ago) link

if i backed into a parking space I wouldn't be able to get stuff (buggy, shopping) into the boot.

kinder, Thursday, 6 December 2018 10:43 (five years ago) link

Read an interesting article about people backing into parking spots. First of all, apparently it's a big thing specifically in Hawaii. Who knew? (xpost I know you did, because you mentioned Hawaii, but I meant generally.) Second, the article linked it to the premise of delayed gratification, where people do the harder work early in return for easy egress later. I still think it messes up the rhythm of busy parking lots though. I know where I am specifically it's actually a ticketable offense, too, because it makes it hard for the police to see your license plate stickers to make sure they are up to date.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

I knew of Hawaii because I lived there for a short time and there are a lot of memes about it. I only get annoyed when people tediously parallel park in large spaces that they could've easily driven straight into.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:02 (five years ago) link

I actually find driving into parallel spots trickier than parallel parking!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:20 (five years ago) link

Same

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:34 (five years ago) link

I don't understand that at all. Plus, it doesn't stop traffic behind you.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:38 (five years ago) link

This is probably one bit of driving that I will start cursing at the driver (in my car, not at them) that they are holding up traffic trying to parallel parking when they could've easily glided into the space.

Yerac, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:40 (five years ago) link

do we need a Parking thread

mick signals, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:41 (five years ago) link

I think when I drive into spots it's an eyes bigger than my stomach sort of situation, where I inevitably misjudged something and end up having to back in again, anyway, to get the right distance to the curb.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:43 (five years ago) link

I thought backing into spaces was a New Jersey thing

President Keyes, Thursday, 6 December 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

There's a new development near my kid's school, with a restaurant and apartments and a charter school. All of this very tight fresh urban design.

Except, here's how they installed the parking spaces on the two-lane street. See what's wrong with this? Hint: I live in the U.S.

I noticed in Singapore that absolutely every car was backed into a parking spot, and the friend who I was visiting laughed and told me to pay attention to how parking works in Thailand when we got there in few days (he had lived there in the past). We landed at the Phuket airport and went to get a cab; all the taxis were parked in a massive unstructured heap in the middle of the lot with the windows open and in neutral, and the driver had to push two or three out of the way enough to get to his. Just the complete opposite of the order in Singapore.

does anyone else have a fucking Mission BBQ near them? this makes me angry:

That seems rationally angry.

is mission bbq that place that plays the national anthem and expects everyone to stand for it?

It is noon at MISSION BBQ as Our National Anthem begins to play. Heroes in military uniforms all rise alongside Police Officers, Firefighters and First Responders. Veterans stand tall. So do families and neighbors. The entire restaurant stops as Our Teammates lead the salute.

Why do we do this every day? Because we can.

As proud Americans, we’re grateful to live in the “land of the free” and “home of the brave.” We’re thankful for all who served to preserve our way of life and keep Our Flag flying. We stand united because that’s what makes the United States stronger. So, hands on hearts, we share strength and show respect.

lmao america is fuckin wild

We went to the only Mission BBQ in NJ after visiting the Cowtown Rodeo about an hours south. Ribs and sandwiches are amazing. My foodie wife could not stop talking about the flavors and textures.
The entire theme and vibe of the place is inspiring. Remembering, supporting and honoring those who have and continue to service in all branches of the military and civic services is inspiring.
After being at the rodeo where they STILL pray at the start, still sing the national anthem REALLY well AND swore in 20 high school graduates into the Air Force, this place made for the perfect end to the day.
PLEASE save me a ton of gas and move up to Central Jersey. We still have Bruce Springsteen if that helps.

President Keyes, Thursday, 6 December 2018 15:57 (five years ago) link

Another terrible company - Black Rifle Coffee.

President Keyes, Thursday, 6 December 2018 16:05 (five years ago) link

Wow I was not aware of the existence of these businesses. I appreciate that Black Rifle Coffee is actually aesthetically aligned with violence and weapons, much cooler than Mission's platitudes about Service and Country.

Remind me never to go to any restaurant where people are shamed into standing during the national anthem. I’d be duty-bound to remain seated as an object lesson in actual freedom, and would get in all kinds of trouble from jingoistic bears of little brain.

In the UK, old people often stand for God Save The Queen when it plays after The Queen’s Christmas broadcast, and Christmas lunch cannot begin until the broadcast is over.

A guy I work with, who's a kind of *Del Boy ducker and diver and is right into his coffee - drinking it, buying it, selling it - showed me this company's website once. This is the same guy who, on hearing I was visiting my family in Scotland, tried to persuade to make a diversion to go and collect some coffee he was thinking of buying - I will not be your coffee mule I told him.

Well, the Scots I know are happy to stand if it will help them throw a variety of missiles at the television during the GSTQ bit. Otherwise, there’s always Channel 4.

Hastings, our tapes-and-CDs store, used to play the National Anthem every day...

there are a couple mission bbqs in my area and i will not go to one or eat the food they piss me off

i need to talk about backing into parking spaces. i fucking hate it. it makes me so mad when people do it. but i was thinking about something. my gym is in a place that has a parking garage. the parking garage does not have angled spots, people drive like maniacs inside it. it has terrible hairpin turns and no one uses the round mirrors. they just blast around them. if you are parked and a car larger than you parks next to you, backing out is a russian roulette game. you have to do it very slowly and even then...is this why everyone seems to back in in this garage? i still won't do it.

also it is hard to drive forward into a space to parallel park. because your back wheels don't steer. in my opinion.\
