the whole thing about satire 'preaching to the audience' is fair enough but isn't that sort of what jokes/comedy is all about anyway?

3kDk (dog latin), Friday, 1 August 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

i mean, half the reason people laugh at jokes is because they are complicit in its logic. if you're not then you won't get the joke. and who's to say satire isn't able to convert people round to opposing ideas?

3kDk (dog latin), Friday, 1 August 2014 15:43 (nine years ago) link

all art preaches to its audience, I don't think that's a big deal or a problem. but his concern seems to be framed around whether satire has any political impact on its audience - which I don't think is really the political point of performing satire; the political point of performing satire is to have an impact on its *target*. Which is why Colbert's show may not be all that important in itself, but Colbert saying things to Dubya's face at the WH Correspondent's Dinner, things that Dubya would otherwise never have heard, was completely amazing. The format of satire/comedy allowed Colbert to do that, to acknowledge truths no one else would acknowledge and say things no one else would say, directly, to the most powerful person in the country.

A friend of mine has another local (Cleveland) friend who is a member of a networking group for young Asian-Americans in Northeast Ohio. She told him that Chu, who had never previously previously been involved with the group, started showing up some time well after his Jeopardy winnings must have reached him, hitting other people up for money for this doc.

yeah this is basically correct

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 02:31 (six years ago) link

my take was that gamergate was a little iceberg tip indicating that popular opinion of kids, or people who think like kids, never look at society at large or the consequences of poor representation of minority voices in what they're into, and they take any criticism or change as a personal attack. it's endemic, and while it's hard to figure out how to support the right people, it takes more effort than writing generalities, like finding out good people and writing positively about their efforts

I am far from the best example because I speak wildly all over the place here and other places, but if I had the opportunity to have a platform, I'd like to think I'd just throw some money to people making a good effort, or use my fame the best I could to support others without trying to become a demagogue or enrich my own standing.

chu is the guy who saw a bonfire and thought his best move was to light his smores on that fire and wave them around to get attention

mh, Thursday, 22 June 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link

I actually had some dumb weird twitter conversations with people of color (idk they were probably sock accounts) who were pro-gamergate and hated the chu-style arguments because they felt aggrieved or blamed

all it takes is to ask how little effort it takes to reach out to a broader audience, and once you're committed to doing so, figuring out who to talk to so you can do it right. and crediting and compensating them accordingly

mh, Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:13 (six years ago) link

idk i think when he first burst onto the scene he was pretty likeable. it wasn't until he took of with his LCD SJW schtick that he really became insufferable

k3vin k., Thursday, 22 June 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

iirc immediately after jeopardy he had cool cred with me because he challenged the narrative around him as the 'game-theory-using' guy who 'broke jeopardy,' and called out that the 'bad guy' 'cold' 'evil mastermind' whatever tropes were not separable from a racial imaginary of the computer-like, heartless asian come to beat our honest american children by studying too much. i might be garbling this but it was cool to see some random guy, given a spotlight, choosing to articulate a critical position about that spotlight through the lens of race. don't quite have it in me to wade back through the full ILX discussion which started here: Will that guy on Jeopardy ever lose? but people were saying he'd be a good ilxor; i see his first essay on "misogyny, entitlement and nerds" got props too.

when gamergate came around i also remember thinking he was super OTM on it, not jumping on a bandwagon at all but being one of the many lifelong gamers who spoke out to condemn gamergate and wax on, perhaps navel-gazingly at times, about how they related to the hobby in this different and less fucked up way. maybe it wouldn't all hold up if i reread it now, but at the time the situation was so toxic and tbh dangerous for a lot of people involved that i was extending mental hi-fives to everybody on the right side of the battle. i have never followed him actively and maybe he has posted many insufferable and terrible things since, or that we now have higher expectations of our internet celebrities but it's not so bizarre that ilxors thought he was a cool guy.

btw clown me endlessly for my old comments here:
LONG DUK DONG

I think he went from using his newfound fame to write about things he knew, from his own perspective, to a point where he's commenting on things for the sake of keeping the ball rolling

it's easy to have a conversation with a few people, decide you've come up with some interesting take on things, and then put it in front of a different person who immediately points out you had a group consensus but it was overall a bad idea. if you're glued to twitter 24/7 you're going to think something a few hundred people were rabidly chasing down the rabbit hole for a day has great importance. but it's just an extension of the "people in a room come to a conclusion" problem

afaict most of his new material is in service to that kind of thing, or weird observations like the gay porn comment jim mentioned

mh, Friday, 23 June 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link
