Weird. Yeah, especially since you won't be waiting for the bus and will actually be on the platform, you will be totally fine. You'll go and realize even the amount of precautions I'm giving you are totally unnecessary.

I've ridden the Green line to its terminus a couple times and never had any problems or even felt nervous but it was during normal commuting hours and I was with other people. Personally, I'm anxious about riding any train line alone after a certain hour, but I think that women, unfortunately, have a whole different spectrum of other people's behaviors to be wary of (so like, it's not just about being white in a predominantly black or latino neighborhood because I have just as much (arguably more) to fear from a drunk frat boy off Fullerton).

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

i've never felt unsafe on the train (with the exception of the interval of time that i was being assaulted on the green line) and i've ridden at all hours through all kinds of neighborhoods. but after a certain hour you definitely have to have your antenae up about who/what else is in your car with you.

that being said it seemed to me that there was always more pain-in-the-assity on the green line (which i rode daily my first 3 or 4 years in chicago) as opposed to the blue line (which i ride now). the panhandling is more aggressive and more rampant, that's the main thing.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

No shit, I a guy came through the car I was riding in the other day dragging a toddler along and asking for change. He swore up and down he didn't drink but he smelled like he had showered in vodka.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Vodka kills the nits.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Hm, maybe I should invest in a handle of 5 O'Clock...

Haymarket anniversary Thursday.

This is quite a week for labor.

Man Man (kenan), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

So this weekend I met this nice dude from Denmark who is sort of a "label mate" of mine -- we both have albums out on Tape Mountain; his band is called Low Fire and you can download an album -- and he is travelling around the US with some Danish friends. They are headed to Chicago in maybe a week. I'm hoping they manage to arrange some sort of show, which I'm hoping some of you might go to, especially if you like poppy songs about depression sung by underage Danish guys. It works!

In other news, a day without Mexicans is like a day without pretty flowers.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

They are headed to Chicago in maybe a week.

unless i read the flyer wrong, they were at the bottle on the 29th.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm too busy to read or contribute this afternoon, so I'll just drop this thought:

If you smoke after sex, you're doing it too fast.

I'll be here all week.

Lots of immigration march photos (thanks to Gaper's Block for the link)

I've had some dicey moments on the green line too - at night when it has only two cars, so they're more densely packed than the red.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Jesse, Tell me more Tell me more
About this washing machine

So the accountants are here today. As we've been selling units in one of our buildings, I've been the one putting the sales info into a spreadsheet. Out of @300 sales I inputed, I was only off by $100 total! WOO HOO!

But yeah, you don't care about that.

Hi.

My day has been in no way affected by the protest.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:04 (twenty years ago)

As for wine, I'm still on the 2BuckChuck level of appreciation.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

My day has been in no way affected by the protest.

the last one added an hour to my commute. i wound up getting off the bus at grand and walking the rest of the way. the bus never passed me.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

As for wine, I'm still on the 2BuckChuck level of appreciation.

you're way past me and my taste for boone's farm.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I don't drink wine coolers any more. That was my first initiation into the next tier of wine connoisseurship.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't like traffic. I do like Mexicans, even Jesse.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

i have not even thought of the phrase "wine coller" since 1991.

bartles & jaymes in the hooowwwwzzzzzzzze!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:13 (twenty years ago)

it seemed like all the old polish dudes in my neighborhood were going. at 6:40 this morning there were probably 20 of them heading to the bus stop at division and western.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:14 (twenty years ago)

It's been a long time for me too. There was a big gap in my wine and wine-related beverages history.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Come to the New Zealand thing! It's like good music - if the winemakers are doing their job, no tasting experience should be necessary.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

back in the late 80s & early 90s boone's farm delicious apple wine was a staple of friday and saturday nights for me and my friends. my wine appreciation (perhaps predictably) never matured beyond it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:17 (twenty years ago)

It's intriguing, but also $25 is a lot when you are broke as a joke (and not a very good joke either). Also, I'm saving money by being ignorant about fancy wines and not developing a taste for them. :-D Ha ha.

Maybe we can all have our own wine tasting party some day where we each bring our favorite bottle... or something.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Sarah, our own party is the thing to do. Did you have the one you brought back from France already?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Yep. I did. I still have champagne from France unopened. Does that count?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

I am going to a 3 Floyd's beer tasting this week, I think.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Er, 3 Floyds'? I was never much for reading beer bottle labels.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Hey, for sure, S. It'd be a privilege to share that one, if you want to have it sometime.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

TELL ME ABOUT THE BEER TASTING.

I like the idea of our own wine tasting party a lot! Boone's Farm smells like a terrible headache to me.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

..and a sour belly.

We should also have olive and cheese platters.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I still have some wee little pickles left over from Easter.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

:-D
Get in my belly!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I made Puerto Rican Chicken and Rice Soup for dinner last night and it was DELISH. Of course, the recipe came from the Joy of Cooking (who still call habenero peppers "scotch bonnets") so I don't know how totally authentically PR it was. Still, it's a pretty excellent pot of soup, if you ask me.

I thought of that because its garnished with sliced olives, and thinking about sliced olives made me think about wee little pickles.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of the term scotch bonnets.

I just learned today that Puerto Ricans tend to not like Mexicans.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

TELL ME ABOUT THE BEER TASTING.

'Twas a quiet Wednesday night until one of my crew of co-consipirators rang me up... "Come on out, we're at the Underbar, so-and-so is in town." I finished watching the hockey match, and having already had a few barley pops, caught the bus up to the bar.

In the place, the ales flowed and the music played. After several trips back to the bar for ever-increasing numbers of 3 Floyds Gumballhead, I drunkenly commented my appreciation for the fine craft brew to the bartending wench. Said she "then you'll be wanting to come to the tasting party we'll be having next week... so-and-so (a different person whose name is not important) that used to work here is a rep for them now, and they'll be unveiling a new beer for the summer that night." My compadres and I made tentative plans to attend, and continued drinking late into the night.

Thursday I wished for a quick death.

Now, a new week is upon us. Unfortunately, the combination of years of alcohol use coupled with the state I was in Thursday morning keeps me from remembering the exact details of the tasting party. But, I will confer with my crew (whose memory is hopefully more sharp than my own) and return with the details of the event forthwith!

God, writing like that is hard.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm too young for WKRP and Barney Miller, too. I remember them airing in syndication, but I wasn't much interested when I was a kid. (Syndicated shows I watched after school: shit like Diff'rent Strokes, Webster, and Mr. Belvedere.)

How old is Magnum O'Shea? He seems to remember a lot about pop culture from the 70s. Last time we saw him he made a reference to someone like Lorraine Newman or Carol Kane.

Courtney's brother is cute. So is Courtney.

I walked around all of downtown Montreal (including Vieux Montreal) today and boy are my legs sore. I think we're going to try to meet up with slocki for drinks later.

jaymc at rrrobyn's (rrrobyn), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

including Vieux Montreal

my favorite part of the city. i can't wait to go back, looks like i'll be going in october.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Magnum O'Shea is 36, maybe? A little older than me, although pop-culturally we are pretty much the same age.

Dan, I await your update with bated breath.

Hey, I think that we should go to Trattoria 10 one night this week (Friday, maybe?) and take advantage of the $12 all you can eat DELICIOUS Italian food buffet that runs from 5 - 8 pm. It's for theater goers, but we don't have to tell them that we hate the performing arts.

Go here and click the Bar Menu link after you skip the stupid intro (which might involve music, who knows, my sound is off): http://www.trattoriaten.com/

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, it runs until 7:30. Whatevs. You know you can put away more than $12 worth of mozarella cheese and shrimp cocktail in 2.5 hours.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

OMG we just got a submission by one Dr. Jeff MANGUM.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:28 (twenty years ago)

So THAT'S what he's been up to these days! Invite him to T. 10!

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

OMG yes! We totally should plan on T10 for Friday. I am off work. Can we make SOLID PLANS?

Wow. There was a double header of marching today. The immigrants at Grant Park and then I walked by the Daley Ctr. where Jan Schokowsky was speaking about how proud she is to be a Jew. She's just a Jew, a lonely Jew, in Chicago.

Anyway, it was an Israeli thing. Something about genocide Jaruf. Jarfur? JarJar?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Darfur?

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh and Sarah?

The dishwasher works great. It's small though.

If you can spare the floorspace, the same money buys you a portable apartment sized rolly dishwasher. I would recommend that. And those are easy to find on Craiglist for pretty cheap.

GET A DISHWASHER! (when you're done being broke as a joke)

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I am NOT talking about Darfur on the internets.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

4:17 p.m.: Charles Williams of Chicago Police Department now estimates the crowd at 400,000.

He says no arrests were reported as of about 3:45 p.m. One person needed emergency medical service and transport by the Chicago Fire Department after fainting. A few kids ended up at the lost child tent.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

The people, united, from their children will be divided!

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

2:58 p.m. On the way to Grant Park, the dominant chant was "si se puede" (yes, it can be done)....Brian Smith and Zack Wicks, both 15-year-old students from Francis Parker School, turned "si se puede" into a modified rap.
