Anyway, where are you staying? There's no shortage of great breakfast and dinner places in Portland. But search Valentine's, the Farm, Nicholas, maybe J&M for breakfast or Bijou. Stop at Voodoo Doughnuts. Pearl Bakery, perhaps also Grand Central. And, you know, Powell's.

If you're swinging by music shops, you might want to stop by Jackpot (2 locations - downtown and Hawthorne)

SE Division is starting to blow up (finally!). Petit Provence does breakfast and is also a bakery. There is also the aforementioned Nuestra Cocina and Lauro for dinner (entrees run $12-$23).
Maybe some others can pipe in to disagree or agree but it seems like PDX'ers are crazy about going out to breakfast on the weekends. Expect a wait if you head out too late.

Cup and Saucer is still hanging on.
Ethiopian places on Broadway are generally good (I tend to go to Blue Nile the most, because it's closest to me) and Costello's is my local coffee/sammich haunt.
PDX is still a huge breakfast town, and the restaurants still close too damn early.

I think Il Piatto is overpriced and bland (which is a shame since I live within spitting distance and I liked it ambience well enough) and Swagat has caused way too many GI issues in friends and smelled far too strongly of ammonia the last time I went.
Ken's Artisan Pizza is new and pretty great.

I have never been to Portland before but I have one important question - where can I find some of your ex-pat English "soccer" pubs where I can see the crucial, balanced-on-a-knife-edge, season-defining Man Utd-Chelsea game on Sunday 26th?
I am staying at the Mcmenamins Kennedy School thing, but I'm driving up so I imagine most places are within my reach.
I might do some other stuff too, who knows.

Horse Brass is the English pub but do they show the games? I don't even remember them having a tv -- but they sure ought to. Costello's, the coffee shop near me, regularly shows soccer games. Either way call first.
