Re: Louis

I'd guess that that Americans who learned about the name as pronounced by Mr. Jagger first read it as "Louie" (as in Huey, Dewey, and Louie).

i actually hear it as 'mister kway' which is probably wrong on several levels but oi who's keeping score

In my Britisher town there is a tapas bar called Que Pasa, and whenever I am on a bus which goes past it there are inevitably Spanish people on the bus who point at it and say "Kway Pasa!" and laugh hysterically, leaving me wondering if the "kway" is a hilarious mockery of English accents or is actually some feature of the Spanish language I was previously unaware of

but I guess it is the former really otherwise the humour is lost on me too

"Q" and "Hooss" (or if you will "Huice"), anyway

why someone would spell something que but pronounce it q is a strange and troubling question to me.

Sip the Hoos cuz I got enough to go around,
And the thought takes place Uptown
I grew up on the sidewalk where I learned street talk,
And then taught to hawk New York-
I go to Queens for queens to get the crew from Brooklyn,
Make money in Manhattan and never been tooken,
Go Uptown and the Bronx to boogie down,
Get strong on the Island, recoup, and lay around.
Time to build my Hoos back up-
Props back up, suckers get smacked up

Since it's supposed to be short for "Hoosteen", I say it the proper way, i.e. "haws".

Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

explain?

steamed hams (harbl), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 13:15 (fourteen years ago) link

In countries were Hoosteen is a common name the "Hoos" part is pronounced "haws", or something close to it. Certainly not "h-ews" or "h-uice".
