We should do a separate poll for British comedians Did a search and this is the best I could find from 2006, http://www.chortle.co.uk/news/2006/12/29/4870/where_the_funny_money_is I guess SBC, Ricky Gervais and Russell Brand would make the list now.

Terminator Eggs (Billy Dods), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:10 (sixteen years ago)

ricky gervaise and SBC would be the list

If I was to make a list of all the UK comedians who do arena tours I guess it would be close to a list of the biggest ones? So it'd be Brand, Gervais, Michael Mcintyre, Eddie Izzard, Harry Hill, Al Murray, Little Britain ppl, Mighty Boosh ppl and apparently Russell Howard (! - or is it?)

Coogan at one time probably made a large chunk of his income from large-theatre tours but now he can probably make 10x that from a cameo in a Hollywood movie (hence interrupting rehearsals for last autumn's "AP and Other Less Successful Chars" for a stint in NATM2...lousy early reviews for the former followed).

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:24 (sixteen years ago)

Oh and Steve Coogan for a round 10 xp

I told u I was deathcore (DJ Mencap), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

jimmy carr?

butchered in the spooky twilight (stevie), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:27 (sixteen years ago)

Other big Brit stand-up earners - Lee Evans, surely? Both Carrs. And yr old guard like Roy Chubby Brown? These figures at the top of the thread put British comedy into perspective though. I mean, yr Mock The Week/HIGNFY/8 of 10 Cats staples have probably paid off a chunk of their mortgage on a semi in the suburbs and that's it.

xp

I seem to see Bill Bailey on the back of a lot of newspapers

MPx4A, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:29 (sixteen years ago)

mock the week. we have a thread on this show, right?

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:30 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I assume that the ones from the UK list who have got their foot in the Hollywood door will be the biggest earners by quite a distance

I told u I was deathcore (DJ Mencap), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:32 (sixteen years ago)

fwiw my list was less the product of deep consideration and more the first ten that popped up when I googled the listings for my local arena venue and saw what comedians were listed there

I told u I was deathcore (DJ Mencap), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:34 (sixteen years ago)

If we had a British list based purely on stand-up earnings (and video sales of same), you might end up with the likes of JETHRO in there somewhere.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:37 (sixteen years ago)

jethro?

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:38 (sixteen years ago)

a quick GIS intrigues me. who is this jethro chracter and what is his angle? flat caps seem to be a part of it.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:39 (sixteen years ago)

Comedy based on badger-gassing, scrumpy and shooting townies.

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

he works blue.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:41 (sixteen years ago)

He is Cornwall's funniest man.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

wkiw Jethro tbh

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

I've seen Jethro, he's weird. Sort of chuckles to himself while saying "cock" a lot.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:43 (sixteen years ago)

there's an app market for that

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:45 (sixteen years ago)

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:45 (sixteen years ago)

Where does Ted Chippington fit into this?

MPx4A, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:45 (sixteen years ago)

Oppositional Soup (Noodle Vague), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:46 (sixteen years ago)

glad i only know the top two

modescalator (blueski), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)

i voted for dane cook. i'd probably pick dunham if i were more familiar with his repertoire.

MC Hammarskjöld (get bent), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:52 (sixteen years ago)

This is a pretty accurate video of the experience of watching Jethro.

I suppose he's only pretending to be pissed?

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 28 September 2009 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

Hugh Laurie would be the top earning Brit perhaps?

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Monday, 28 September 2009 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

Stretching the definition of comedian there a bit. John Cleese? Though he's always crying poverty due to various divorce settlements.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:01 (sixteen years ago)

he still had the income at some stage, we're not allowing those complaints to stand.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

thread title makes me want to start Top Ten Ealing Comedies

modescalator (blueski), Monday, 28 September 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

Griff Rhys Jones, Mel Smith, Jimmy Mulville and Jasper Carrott have all made a fortune from their production companies

Ward Fowler, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

and rory mcgrath can be added to that, right?

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

ha, no.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

the reason he's in the state he's in is that he cashed out early and his buddies didn't.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

iirc anyway.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

Good call on Prod Comp comics. Mulville probably the 4th wealthiest Everton fan after Sir Paul Mc, Bill Kenwright and, er, Sly Stallone.

Michael Jones, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

Rowan Atkinson is HUGELY rich I think.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Monday, 28 September 2009 11:27 (sixteen years ago)

didn't know that about mcgrath. just assumed he was on that bandwagon with the rest of them.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 11:36 (sixteen years ago)

it's local folklore at any rate that mcgrath was on board hat trick but got out too soon. wiki suggests he was involved for longer than i'd thought, but i guess the founders flipped it after he left or something. talkback was sold off for millions some time in the 90s or 00s iirc.

history mayne, Monday, 28 September 2009 11:42 (sixteen years ago)

what about billy connolly? he must have some money. and he does sell-out shows, right? or do scottish people not count?

scott seward, Monday, 28 September 2009 12:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I meant to mention him, he very much counts... he's about to do a shit ton of consecutive nights in the SECC in Glasgow, if you added them all up it would be like a stadium show

I told u I was deathcore (DJ Mencap), Monday, 28 September 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

xposts, dont know when this was published, but

Rowan Atkinson is revealed today as Britain's richest TV star, thanks largely to his nerdy misfit creation, Mr Bean.

The 48-year- old comedian has impressive homes in Chelsea and Oxford, drives a collection of luxurious fast cars . . . and is worth around £60million.

rent, Monday, 28 September 2009 13:03 (sixteen years ago)

i think larry the cable guy is a fucking GENIUS. cuz this is what he was like before he came up with his million dollar character:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIWO5LgUZ28

scott seward, Monday, 28 September 2009 13:04 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, to go from 4th-rate hack comic playing crap dives for years to second-rate hee haw rip-off multi-million dollar industry is pretty inspired and inspiring.

scott seward, Monday, 28 September 2009 13:06 (sixteen years ago)

i agree he's shrewd etc, but i don't hold it against him, since he's a performer...what comedian doesn't cop an alternative personality on stage

rent, Monday, 28 September 2009 13:09 (sixteen years ago)

carrot top?
