sevengrand is really great when not crowded. Which is hardly EVER. Otherwise, roll deep and take over a booth. The whiskey selection is unmatched in the greater LA area as far as I can tell.

Char No. 4 was OK but I wasn't thrilled with their selection for a bourbon place.
― Britain's Favourite Carp (I DIED), Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
is there a whiskey equivalent for beermenus.com? not that i do much high-end bourbon drinking (especially not at a bar) but it would be neat to have as a reference.
― ian, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)
I miss the days of hanging out at the whiskey ward.
ian/dmr, fette sau has stagg for $16 i think? not sure what age it is.
i can't find it in stores here.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)
sixteen is too much for a glass of whiskey imo. though i do love fette sau.
you can buy most liquor online tza.
― ian, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)
i know. i gotta get on that.
i had it there to celebrate my last day of work in may, and i had 1. i wouldn't normally drink that extravagantly!
― tehresa, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:10 (sixteen years ago)
but in some cases, better to spend $16 on a kickass whiskey than get 2 glasses of a poorer one.
― tehresa, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
what about sixteen shots of something dreadful
― thomp, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
yea what are some good online liquor stores
― mark cl, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
not sure what age it is.
I'm pretty sure there's only one age of it cause after I saw how much cheaper the Stagg was at Whiskey Ward I tried to check to see if CN4 had had some super-premium Stagg 30 Year or something. but no, they just have really high-ass prices. I liked the food though, the house-made sausages were v good ... as a bar it's kinda bullshit.
― dmr, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:33 (sixteen years ago)
imo use google shopping for price comparisons
― ian, Wednesday, 23 September 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

― mark cl, Thursday, 1 October 2009 00:47 (sixteen years ago)
i have not developed an advanced bourbon palate but i think it's awesome. it smells incredible.
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 1 October 2009 00:53 (sixteen years ago)
anyone had wasmund's single malt (or anything else) from copper fox distillery?
― W i l l, Thursday, 1 October 2009 01:25 (sixteen years ago)
drinking knob creek at the moment.however, the last two nights i've been drinking the special at a bar in the neighborhood--shot of evan williams & can of black label for $4. pretty good deal imo.
― ian, Thursday, 1 October 2009 01:42 (sixteen years ago)
(xpost) They're getting better with each release, but they still don't stand up to a more traditionally made product. Good effort, and I understand why they did the wood chip quick aging the way they did (hard to be a start up distillery and wait years for your first income), but so far all the ones I've had just seem like part of an interesting learning process. Might be serious in a couple more years, though.
― Britain's Favourite Carp (I DIED), Thursday, 1 October 2009 01:45 (sixteen years ago)
Hmm, thanks for the tip.
― W i l l, Thursday, 1 October 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

Rittenhouse 100 with ginger ale.
― svend, Thursday, 1 October 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago)
youre right, buffalo trace does not taste bad by any stretch but it smells absolutely amazing. at (now sadly defunct) marty's liquors down the street from me, there used to be this weird old guy who didn't actually work there but liked to pretend he did. if you went down one of the liquor aisles he would ask you what you were looking for, and he was pretty hard to get rid of. he turned me on to buffalo trace. i think he was actually pretty knowledgeable of their stock!

I DIED, I sent you a webmail.
― W i l l, Friday, 2 October 2009 00:19 (sixteen years ago)
basil hayden's - pretty good imo. almost fruity on the nose, maybe a little cinnamon? apparently is made w/ twice as much rye as some of the other small batches from beam - you can definitely taste it. there's like this slightly minty flavor there, w/ a little spice. definitely lighter than a most of the bourbons i've tried
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:43 (sixteen years ago)
yeah the thing i noticed about it was how it disappeared off yr palate as soon as you swallowed. i was kind of put off at first but then i decided it was cool.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)
yea right? it totally does that!!
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:47 (sixteen years ago)
yeah it's the damnedest thing. definitely works better neat or with one ice cube as opposed to some bourbons where i want them to mellow out over the course of a glass. it's already totally mellow to begin with.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:50 (sixteen years ago)
i bought some bulleit today btw--may have a glass in a bit.
yea it's really really mellow
out of the whiskeys i have (which isn't many) - knob, bulleit, dickel, overholt - it's the overholt that it reminds the most of. must be the rye? that could be way off and i'll probably change that the more i drink BH or do a side-by-side tasting but it kind of tastes like a much brighter, more flowery/fruitier overholt. there is this base flavoring the two of them have that seems similar
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)
i like bulleit a lot
there's this big cedar flavor that bulleit has that i like a lot
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 02:54 (sixteen years ago)
yeah!
bh, i never thought of it as particularly light! hmm.
― tehresa, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:02 (sixteen years ago)
how do you pronounce bulleit?
― Peepoop Patel (harbl), Friday, 30 October 2009 03:03 (sixteen years ago)
everywhere i've heard it's just "bullet"
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:06 (sixteen years ago)
a whiskey dork and close friend who works in the spirits industry also clarified for me that it's "bullet"
― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:07 (sixteen years ago)
ok that's what i thought!
― Peepoop Patel (harbl), Friday, 30 October 2009 03:08 (sixteen years ago)
i didn't wanna walk into a store and be like do you guys have boo-lightmaybe i will get some. i am more interested in liquor than i used to be (mostly a beer person).
― Peepoop Patel (harbl), Friday, 30 October 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)
ppl should have whiskey on hand imo
― call all destroyer, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

― mark cl, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)
haha i don't have proper whiskey glass sizes at all. drinking glasses - 2 left, i broke 1, 32 oz mason jars, coffee mugs (drinking wine out of a handmade one that says "good luck you'll need it" rn). i hope that's ok with y'all.
― Peepoop Patel (harbl), Friday, 30 October 2009 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

― velko, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:19 (sixteen years ago)

― ian, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

― call all destroyer, Friday, 30 October 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)
btw CAD i went to blanchard's the other night. that place is awesome - tons of beer in the cooler, even more on the shelves. whiskey selection was much better than most places i've been so far in boston. staff were super helpful - i think like three different people asked if i need help, and the guy i talked to about bourbon chatted w/ me for a while
