Cheap = $80/night. Bear in mind that this is in a mansion and we were the only people there besides the hosts. Breakfast each morning, for what we had, would probably have cost upwards of 40 bucks each day. There was an in-room whirlpool and free wireless. No in room TV but a big media room where again, we were the only users. All in all it was great. The price goes up (doubles?) in the warmer months, btw. xxpost

The Crash set/dance/song was the worst thing I've ever seen.

Oof. I know. I thought the dancing hookers for the pimp song were real fucking classy, too. Also, somehow I still fail to have any pimp-sympathy.

Thank you for the invite, N&S&K. Alas, I had to do laundry and read for class while watching, so could not incorporate leaving our apartment into the plans. Jeff and I both really wanted to come over, though, and we decided that it would be very helpful to us if you both would just move into our building.

xpost: OMG the eyebrow! THE EYEBROW! What was that all about?????

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Also, Jen Garner's makeup made it look like she had a horrible sunburn on her forehead.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 6 March 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

That's right. She lets me call her Jen.

Sarah Madkitten McLusky (coco), Monday, 6 March 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Pimpathy.

OMG Chris, what bookstore are you talking about?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

W00dl@nd P@tt3rn.

I'm googleproofing it because it is shy.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Best if you like: experimental 20th C. poetry. Also good for: A fiction section that is huge and has nothing you've heard of, or, as my friend pointed out, only the obscure books by people you've heard of. A bookstore where they had several books by people I knew on display. (They also had haikunym's books, but not on display. I didn't explore the children's section beyond that, because we were starving by then.)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

i watched most of the oscars but missed the pimp dance and the speech before/after somehow because i got bored and went online for a bit and was reading about this pic, which amused me.

http://cache.deadspin.com/sports/ooopstexas.jpg

it's not really nsfw, i would think, because you kind of have to look twice for what they are saying is an optical illusion.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I am overloaded from the Oscars and then going out with Kenan, Chris, and Jesse. Soooo tired.

Disappointed about Crash, obv.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'm not familiar with that place at all.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Every time I've been to Milwaukee there's been some kind of interesting underground music/theater/literature thing going on - very different feel than Chicago because it's actually underground there instead of something that's expected of its citizens.

Get well, Manda! The fries will wait. Perhaps the beer garden will be open soon.

I didn't see much of the Oscars, but I did see the Crash dance.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

The afterparty was a thick slice of overload, but in a good way. At least for my unemployed ass.

Juliaa, whaa?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Julia... Whoa! Is it an optical illusion because it's really the underside of his shorts fabric? I am positive that dudes keep their junk strapped in tight when they are running and jumping and quickly changing direction. You can see his compression shorts under his uniform shorts, so that would have to be a donger with a mind of its own to get out of there and say hello to the crowd.

My first thought was that you were posting the pic because the guy taking the shot was wearing boots. Ha!

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he has two.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

One is tightly strapped (the one that works) and the other one just flops around for laffs?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

We're going to talk about basketball in labor law today. I wonder if there's any way I can bring up this photo...

xpost: A parasitic donger! Gross!

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Something similar happened to one of my friends in high school - he had gone to visit his girlfriend's family and they took a photo of him and a her and a few others siiting on a living room couch, and he was wearing shorts and no drawers, and...

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

the word "donger" is inherently funny somehow.

it was on the front page of some paper before anyone noticed what they say is just an optical illusion with something about the photography and the light and whatever. still, amusing.

diphallic terata

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I certainly hope that's an optical illusion, from an anatomical standpoint.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Extremely amusing, especially if taken in conjunction with the look on his face, which is just screaming out, "OH MY GOD MY DICK IS FLOPPING OUT OF MY SHORTS."

Speaking of phallic things, I smell sausage and it's making me very hungry.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

amanda, are you not feeling well?

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

(the key to the most hilariously awkward Trivial Pursuit question ever read aloud in a high school classroom - What does a man with "diphallic terata" have two of?) xxxpost

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

xpost - No, not really feeling so well. I slept terribly on account of a monster headache and now the medicine I took is making me nauseous. Or the residual headache (underneath the medicine) is making me barfy. Has anyone else taken Imitr3x? Shit is WAY too expensive. My doc gave me a sample and it made the headache go away but now I think I might puke.
Hey Kels - look at my flickr page for an awesome facial mask photo. Hottness.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

that's kinda like the genius guy from funnyfascinating episode of "first person" (the who wants to be a millionaire one--last disc--omg).

he was a really smart little kid and at the age of 4 was reading magazines in the barber shop one day, and asked loudly what "premature ejaculation" was.

xp ugh really bad headaches suck.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

They sure do. Especially ones with barfy undertones. I hope you feel better, A! And fast!

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Thanks y'all. 2006 has been unusually sickly for me. Does anyone else get crippling headaches?

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Sorry about the headaches!

The facial mask picture is 2006's new pornography. That shit if fo' real, dude. LOVE the 40-year-old virgin shirt. Love the orange.

Sweet Tater (kelstarry), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:43 (twenty years ago)

No crippling headaches. Acid reflux and joint problems are my chronic health crosses to bear. I will actually take them both over crippling headaches - gladly. Non-crippling headaches are bad enough. I have a lot of sympathy.

Nutsy the Squirrel (pullapartgirl), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, my dad gets pretty regular migraines, and I think I've gotten a couple in the past. The weirdest part is that (in his case at least) they appear to be totally "naturally" occuring. He's had MRIs, CT scans, all that shit, and nothing is wrong with his head. Well, physically at least.

Ususally the best cure was to sit in a dark room and try to fall asleep. He also used to smoke a lot of weed, and that probably helped too.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone else get crippling headaches?

i get really bad headaches where i get all sound and light sensitive and i just want to curl up in a ball and die. i get all sorts of headaches actually--i feel like i should have names for the different ones, but they all just end up being OW OW OW FUCK THIS.

my doc suggested nasal spray in case some of them were sinus headaches, but it seems to cause headaches rather than help/prevent them. my brane is broken.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, this has been bugging me for a few days.

SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT

When I think of those east end lights, muggy nights
The curtains drawn in the little room downstairs
Prima donna lord you really should have been there
Sitting like a princess perched in her electric chair
And it’s one more beer and I don’t hear you anymore
We’ve all gone crazy lately
My friends out there rolling round the basement floor

And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn’t you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
You’re a butterfly
And butterflies are free to fly
Fly away, high away, bye bye

I never realised the passing hours of evening showers
A slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams
I’m strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It’s four o’clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I’m sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music’s still alive

And I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river
Clinging to your stocks and bonds
Paying your h.p. demands forever
They’re coming in the morning with a truck to take me home
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight, someone saved my life tonight
Someone saved my life tonight
So save your strength and run the field you play alone

Thank you, Elton and Bernie. And that dude at the show who got this song stuck in my head. Thank you most of all.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I seriously thought I was having an aneurysm or something. Thanks for the tips -- Imitr3x is making me really nauseous, so I'm going to stick with the other pills I have. These headaches are so rotten that they wake me up in the middle of the night and creep into my dream, if I manage to fall asleep. This one was named Dang Junsten.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Looking over those lyrics, that seems like a pretty dickish song.

My family is prone to migraines, and I am very happy that it doesn't seem to have been passed on to me. Eep.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

BTW - my dad has also been on a shitload of migraine/headache meds (not sure about Imitr3x, tho.) He says the "cure" is often worse than the problem, so he only takes them when very necessary.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

i have various narcotics and crazy pain killers around but i'm afraid to take them. drug side effects can be really horrible, so i only take tylenol pm at night, or ibuprofen during the day. they don't necessarily work well, but sometimes they dull things a bit.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

On a completely non-headache related note: W|ilderness is a pretty awesome band, and they are playing the Bottle on the 16th, and everyone should go. The end.

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Note to self: g00gle-proofing is pointless if you just add another character before the one you intend to replace

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:10 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, can you elucidate your "John:high heels::Amanda:Oscars" analogy? You don't find the Oscars attractive but love high heels, whereas I don't find high heels attractive but love the Oscars? Or is there more nuance to it than that?

You know, the more I think about it, the more Brokeback losing really upsets me, not just because it was the superior film to Crash, but because this was so Brokeback's year. And not just that it won so many precursor awards (I think the Chicago Film Critics were the only ones to give Crash their Best Picture award -- also, I guess, the Screen Actors Guild, if the Ensemble prize counts). But it was also a HUGE cultural phenomenon, and the Oscar would've underscored that nicely. What I'm disturbed by is the possibility that Brokeback lost because of homophobia -- which seems like it'd be unlikely in Hollywood, but I'm not sure what else explains it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

It was overhyped. Everyone roots for the underdog.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Not at the Oscars, though! I mean, the last time the underdog won Best Picture was Shakespeare in Love in 1998 -- and in that case, it had the momentum of having been released at the end of the year, whereas Saving Private Ryan was a summer film. What's weird about Brokeback losing is that it lost to a movie that was released last spring and that no one was really even talking about until it started getting some recent awards buzz.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Strange days have found us.

Shiny Maroon (kenan), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Good, I'm glad you made it home.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, can you elucidate your "John:high heels::Amanda:Oscars" analogy? You don't find the Oscars attractive but love high heels, whereas I don't find high heels attractive but love the Oscars? Or is there more nuance to it than that?
Unfortunately, I have very little nuance to offer. You think heels are overrated, boring, predictable and stupid. (Right?) That's how I feel about the Oscars. Booooooring to watch people congratulate themselves.

HOWEVER, I enjoyed staring at Michelle Williams and her mustard-colored dress for couple of seconds. She looked lovely.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Crash was the only nominee I've seen, and while there were things I liked about it, it doesn't seem like a "best picture". Or maybe it does.

It seemed weird that the same five movies were up for everything, esp. Walk the Line and Geisha (which I don't think anyone actually saw?).

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i did the unbelievable saturday night, i paid $10 for a pack of smokes at the hideout. TEN DOLLARS. that works out to $.50 per smoke. that is insane.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:46 (twenty years ago)

You think heels are overrated, boring, predictable and stupid. (Right?) That's how I feel about the Oscars.

OMG We're like SISTERS!!!!!!!1111one

Steely Df'nM (OutDatWay), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Goody! I always wanted a sister.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:48 (twenty years ago)

You think heels are overrated, boring, predictable and stupid. (Right?)

No, I just don't find them attractive: they're too indicative of the artifice of womanliness.

I like the Oscars because I like cultural phenomena. And statistics. And making fun of celebrities.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 March 2006 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh, ok - well I guess it was a bad analogy then. Sorey.
