What is good for lunch around 5th and 31st?

Ed, Monday, 18 August 2008 14:29 (seventeen years ago)

Ed - there is a really good vegetarian korean place right there (I know that sounds suspect, but I love it and am a huge carnivore) called hangawi- its a little expensive and fancy if you're just looking for a quick lunch tho

bell_labs, Monday, 18 August 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)

yeah someone needs to start taking me out to dinner or something.

tehresa, Monday, 18 August 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

is there any good food in murray hill besides indian or is it all just tasty d?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

dinner food or lunch/takeout food?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

both. i am going to school at 24th & lexington
also how is "new york burger company"?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

Shake Shack, obv

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

nybc is okay. you're not that far from molly's (22nd and 2nd), which makes one of the best burgers in the city imo.

tiffin wallah, chennai garden, saravanaas are all good veg indian. kalustyan's has a cafe on the second floor, where you can get really tasty, enormous sandwiches and middle eastern platters. right near there is a branch of rice, but i've never tried it.

mishima on 31st and lex is pretty good for sushi, and a few doors down saburi (which is japanese-style chinese food) is supposed to have good cold noodles.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

it's not super-close, but good deli - http://www.todarobros.com/

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

oh thanks lauren.
i love kalustyan's and am excited that's nearby. i tried rice yesterday and it was pretty good too.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

la posada, on 3rd ave around 26th/27th, is fast "mexican" that's a step above the fresca tortilla places. they have a rice/beans/grilled meat plate that's a good, quick option.

l'annam (vietnamese) has a branch near there, and while most of the food is mediocre, the grilled pork chops are great and a great deal at lunch.

xpost - todaro's is good, but i wouldn't go out of the way for it. for sandwiches, this place is better and closer to where she'll be:

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

btw, 24th and Lex is Flatiron or Kips Bay, not Murray Hill

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

Curry Hill, maybe

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

3rd avenue is considered the western boundary of kips bay, as far as i know.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

and isn't it too far east to be flatiron?

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

it's the transition zone between the two, hence Curry Hill if anything. but it's definitely not Murray Hill, which ends several blocks North.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

i still have not been to shake shack!

someone suggest a bar in the bedford-ish area that is sort of nice but not too $$$ for me to take my friend for bday drinks tonight. she is dining w/ her parents at aurora (i think?) first, so somewhere nearby would be good.

tehresa, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

true - i think of murray hill as 34th street and above. so what the hell is that neighborhood? i think it's sometimes called "northern gramercy" by real estate agents, but that's clearly bullshit. wiki suggests "rose hill," which is cute.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)

guys... i have about 30 min to decide on where we are going! help!
anyone been to soft spot or oulo? is oulo too froo froo? what is the deal with the 'piano bar' aspect of soft spot? this is all coming from fr33williamsburg, nymag and yelp, so i need help (oulo mysteriously not on yelp!).

tehresa, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

good food i had when i was in nyc last week:

pure food and wine
alta tapas restaurant
cafe 2 at MOMA

t0dd swiss, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 23:58 (seventeen years ago)

maybe i will just pick ottoman bc it is easy :)

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

i really wish i could help you but i'm not in the know. have fun!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really want to go at all. i already did an all-day thing on sunday for her bday... i don't know why i've been 'invited' to take her out again. also i'm going to get the sloppy end of things as she met someone for drinks earlier and will be coming from dinner w/ her parents where she will surely also drink. so maybe a not too fancy place?

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:35 (seventeen years ago)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:58 (seventeen years ago)

Going to Saul on Smith St. in Brooklyn. Anyone have experiences? Suggestions?

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

back forty on ave b. -- big dud, won't go back

overpriced pseudo down-home cooking, loud obnoxious crowd, "lobster" and "crab" roll had no lobster and only shredded crabmeat, no lump

dmr, Saturday, 23 August 2008 15:14 (seventeen years ago)

back forty? that's a long game of golf.

ian, Saturday, 23 August 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

Thx for the trouble-saving heads-up, dmr

gabbneb, Saturday, 23 August 2008 17:18 (seventeen years ago)

Today I will go to the Lemon Ice King of Corona, and also possibly tomorrow.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 23 August 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)

Liked Robin Du Bois. Not the best country french food I ever had but good, reasonably priced and awesome back garden.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 23 August 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Sandwich from lamazou today - awesome!

bell_labs, Saturday, 23 August 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

so i tried the famous halal chicken & rice cart on friday, the one @ 53rd & 6th in manhattan, now operating during the day too. gotta admit it was tasty. next time I'll get a little more hot sauce and a lot less white sauce. but i'll be back in the area next friday. oh and a total bargain for $5, almost more than I could finish.

gabbneb, Monday, 25 August 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah no problem. I forgot to mention the "pork jowl nuggets" appetizer, basically deep-fried blobs of gristle .... maybe I shoulda figured that going in, but damn they were gross. I love pork belly and stuff but this was over the line

dmr, Monday, 25 August 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)

that one could be a matter of taste, though. the lobster roll was just a ripoff.

dmr, Monday, 25 August 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

That cart's not Kwik Meal, right? That's 46th and 6th, and it's great. Though lately I've been going to Sammy's Halal in Jackson Heights all too often.
