Those Asuka Ohsawa paintings are amazing.

They really need to be seen up close though -- lots of incredible detail.

Those Asuka Ohsawa paintings are amazing.

She had a show at Gallery 825 in Bergamot Station in Santa Monica; it ended on June 4. I think she's local, so keep your eyes open.

Jesumpete, that image by Matthew Day Jackson is ridiculously huge - nearly 3000x2000 pixels.

Where did you find out about Mario Campos, Unagiknee?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 19:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Jake and Dinos Chapman (more the small cute models and less the big fiberglass mutant kids)

Is that a photograph or is the diorama itself the piece?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 22:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I believe that image is from 'Hell', which was series of dioramas.

Wiggy, I just saw the Steven Shore show. I liked it: my favorite part was probably the last room, with the big green landscapes, which everyone else I've talked to has sort of hated or thought was boring.

That reminds me of two people from the Thing show at the Hammer that I wanted to add:

such a good thread! generally how does one get exposed to these things (other than in this thread obv)? Magazines? Websites? I like to go to the museum but it doesn't change fast enough for me

is a photo

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 02:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Not only is it a painting, it's a watercolor. Wish I could see it up close, I've never seen a photo-realistic watercolor before.

So's this one

re: getting exposed to this stuff, in my case I see much more art in magazines and on the internet (gallery webpages, art blogs, show reviews, etc.) than in reality, unfortunately.

Penguin USA Paper, Tuesday, 27 September 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

dean, that's gorgeous.

i bet this is what everyone asks you but how long did it take to paint and do you only work on one thing at a time?
