so back in the day *all* the threads appealed to you? i mean, i'm american, but i don't read the convention thread, among others. at a fair number of yr complaints one can respond: okay, don't read that one/okay create one of yr own that's better.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah -- wtf does that accomplish? Many threads do not appeal to you now = what?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude -- how hilarious is it that you talk about "meta shit" in your ILX POST IN WHICH YOU RATE ALL THE THREAD TITLES IN THE NEW ANSWERS COLUMN IN A THREAD ABOUT THE HISTORY OF ILX.

Oh, I get drawn into things I don't really have much interest in all right. That's when I know I'm not enjoying ILX and should take a break. And I did say that as meta-threads go, this one was OK.

Maybe it was a bad idea. Sorry. As I said - it wasn't supposed to be an attack, and I really don't think I was that negative! I said I liked quite a few threads, and why. As I said, I really should do a comparison with the older list, but I was serious about my thumb hurting and I thought it was clear enough if you go back to the 2001 list that many of the things I do deprecate were not so prevalent then.

I don't expect people to change way they post or start threads. It would be ridiculous to ask them to do that just to please me. Paulhw asked how it had changed and that was just supposed to illustrate it a bit.

Carry on.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

But without a comparison it doesn't illustrate anything except what it's like to you now.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a bit defensive, the question was asked and not once has Dastoor tried to insult any of you, and has even gone out of his way to express that these are just his reasons for not posting on certain threads where he would've posted on more in the past, and not meant as any call to a new order.

The only thing I'm confused about is why he even answered the question. I clicked on the thread because I was intrigued by the amount of answers there were, what with the usual anti-nu-ilx suspects not having been around much lately. I'm only answering (non-answering actually) because I'm genuinely curious as to wtf roxy is getting pissed off with Dastoor about.

I'm with Jimmy the Mod.

(err xpost, see what he said for himself I suppose)

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not pissed off at Dastoor!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

also: i need to know if you can swim, since that's the only thread i started

xp hooray return allyzay ps we're not pissed but we're the newcomers so obv we'd feel slighted

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess the old saying goes if there's something you want to discuss then post your question (or revive old threads if necessary). then surely the topic will get discussed and the proportions of thread you don't like will reduce.

unless you think that people won't like discussing things that you like? or if you don't like discussing things with the people here anymore?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird Animals (15 new answers)

Filler. OK.

:(

FYI it is an amalgamation of zoological oddities and curiosities meant to broaden one's (and my own) awareness of biological diversity.

Hrmph!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

A dude can't rag on someone for posting a giant review of new answers? And it has nothing to do with ILX this or ILX now or whatever, because I don't know what it was like and don't care if someone thinks it sucks, cause it often does (see other posts of mine on this thread). Also, I like Dastoor. He is one of my faves. I am not mad. Nor defensive. Just poking the fun. Sorry if it scared people.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss "N".

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

roxy's just pissed off because she doesn't like the word "longtime"

ken c (ken c), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally is right, it did seem defensive. (this coming from someone who has gotten similarly defensive in the past)

Roxy is right though, too. (which makes Ally wrong). He wasn't really answering the question, seeing as the question wasn't "why not give us your personal review of the New Answers page?".

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M SORRY, IT JUST SEEMED THAT YOU WERE GETTING AGITATED WITH HIM, CARRY ON.

xpost I think a huge part of the problem discussing the "difference" between the old and the new has to do with people always assuming any perceived disrespect towards either side is directed towards the entirety of the group, which is never really the case. And I think that what Ken says in his last line is just about a good summary of it: whether or not the threads were better/worse/same in topic three years ago, there is no question that the people who post on the board changed. If you dislike discussing things with XYZ people within the new group, or you preferred the XYZ people of the old group who have disappeared (this is an inevitable phenomenon anyway, people get tired of things, not necessarily "driven away" as often claimed by people), then you will dislike the tone of the board. Not wanting to partake in certain things isn't necessarily a condemnation of the people involved or a judgement call of "good v. bad", it's just a statement that you don't want to partake in what is happening in that area.

You can, I suppose, compare it to the phenomenon of bars, to clear up my convolution here, right. You have your neighborhood bar. You have a set group of people in your neighborhood bar you are friends with. You might also have some people there you really dislike, but at any rate you're used to all of these people and you're used to the tone of this neighborhood joint. Now, suddenly, your neighborhood joint becomes a "hot spot" and there is an influx of people. Some of the original regulars are going to be offended on principal. Others are going to feel that the "tone" has changed, people play different songs on the jukebox or your beer runs out on draught more regularly or whatever, and have a hard time adjusting. Other people still enjoy the bartenders there and resolve to make new friends. Still more people stick with their original group, while still going to this neighborhood hot spot. It's not saying that any of the old group's responses are good or bad, or that any of the new people are good or bad for coming in. It's just a human response.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i don't like discussing things with tiny little t. rex arms, it's true

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Leeee, we all need a bit of filler! And yeah, it's only filler to me, I guess, because I'm not that interested in zoology. I realise it's not just all pictures of wacky animals (like what I posted!)

I feel bad, though. There were a lot of frivolous snap judgements, like commenting on a Top 40 singles chart, or something.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nu-Allyzay is very wise.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a dig at Ken C?

xxxpost

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, xpost, oops, please explain to me how Dastoor, a "longtime ILXor" (it sounds like a condition of plague), posting his thoughts on the new answers list as of now and how he personally relates to it, not even theoretically an answer to the question:

Has the tone or style of conversation changed?

I mean, no, he didn't do a comparison but his replies to each thread indicated reasons why he felt the board had changed in some way, for him personally.

I'm not sure what constitutes a "longtime ILXor," because I am pretty sure several of the posters on this thread have been here for a long time now and would count as such?

xpost someone here has tiny little arms? Ugh, seriously, I can't handle that, I'm done.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ally: of course it's a human response! we're just trying to argue that hey we newcomers aren't so bad when you set aside the old-school thing. besides, you have even requested that certain older threads be deleted, so it's not like everything older is good...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I always always enjoy Jimmy The Mod's contributions, and he's been around forever.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and it was a dig at ken c's photoshopped arms

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ie, a joke

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh - can I make a person plea here (it seems as good a place as any) not to use my full real name anymore. I guess surname alone isn't too bad. I've just changed my mind about googlibility, based on a couple of minor things that have happened to me. Nothing serious. Ta.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, awesome.

xpost, no prob alba.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

okay jessica i mean dude with alarm clock!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally: cause he only explained his reaction to things now, and didn't contrast it to his reactions to things then. Perhaps you, being around way back then, know how he felt about ILE then, but he didn't make it explicit to the rest of us. Only one end of the comparison was made. He said his thumbs were tired. Fine, okay.

oops (Oops), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

For the record, to make my position on "nu-ILX" and whether or not it bothers me clear, the only times I have hiatused from ILX have had to do with one of two things:

1) personal, unwarranted harrassment from a definite "longtime ILXor" (who seems gone though perhaps posting this will bring it)
2) having fights with Tom over things I've posted to ILX and me throwing a regrettable stroppy fit and doing things like abolishing ILX from my computer, deleting my photo archive, etc to spite him.

So, to me, a longtime ILXor, the board has definitely changed, just as I have changed a lot, and because of both of those things (plus the two mentioned above) I use the board less now, but, hell, I'm like one of 10 people who doesn't seem to dislike Jon Williams, I'm certainly not going to dislike your average ILXor. For a while it was a bit bothersome to me, because I no longer felt I could use the board for the purposes I was originally using it for, but pretty soon I realized that was quite childish and I really didn't care very much and like the occasional distraction it might offer now.

xpost no, I am never going to defend the proposition that everything old is good, mookieproof, far from it, I am wholly in advocation of deleting the entire archive, truth be told.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and Alba, I apologize for use of name!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You are all goading me so much I can see I'm going to have to do the comparison tomorrow and I'll end up proving myself wrong or something.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

N., I was being defensive myself. I've been sensitive lately.

And your naked penis contribution is monumental!

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I want 'His naked penis contribution was monumental' to be my epitaph.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

will the comparison tomorrow have to be 50 thread titles long?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to apologize for my lengthy drift on this thread at any rate, I'm in the process of writing two lengthy papers on disparate topics and my mind is in cocaine mode or something, you are all lucky I am not drawing comparisons to the work of Albert Camus or something.

That is all from me. Goodnight, sleep tight, and for the record everyone on this thread is ok by me. *salute*

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

okay so i tried to write a defense--but maybe ilx *is* worse now. i would certainly believe it, i guess i'm just getting defensive cause i'm newer. so, then, how to be better?

ps N/alba/AllyzaySC/etc don't go!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you all rule

Whatever the public wants, ken.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

you are all lucky I am not drawing comparisons to the work of Albert Camus or something

"Posting on the thread
with a gun in my hand..."

*hides*

Good luck on yer papers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, hit me up with some Camus comparisons!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 30 July 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

this place has gotten a bit dummer, not cuz of 'nuilxors r so stupid' or anything like that, just that losing mark sinker and frank kogan and felicity and j0hn d and not nearly as much sterling clover and nabisco and ally and dave q and momus come to think of it as once was has taken a hit on this place. the bulls haven't recovered from losing jordan and pippen either. i can't rely on ilm reliably exposing me to something i'm going to play the fuck out of the next week nearly as much as i used to - bye bye matos, ethan trife, and nate patrin and tom ewing, minna, diamond, yancey, jbr and jess don't post nearly like they used to (you can throw these folx in the smarties pile too but these were people i specifically definitely paid attention to when they talked about music). man i don't even want to know what i'd think of ilm minus chuck eddy (who's a nuilxor!) and haikudiffer. this place has gotten bigger too, it definitely seems like there's ALOT more people than once was which turns it a bit into a blur.

i remember when people would argue and 'debate' in long paragraphs - that don't happen anymore and i suspect alot of that's due to the growth of the place, people don't want to get caught in the xposting.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

In part I'm trying to redress the long paragraph conundrum by balancing more work between the FT blogs here, and in a couple of cases intentional throwing in cross-references -- that way one audience which may no longer be here but is there can comment and vice versa.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 July 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

alba is dastoor?

I'm confused.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 July 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

opps, sorry didn't read the whole thread, so didn't deliberately type whole name thing.

maybe someone could blank it out or something.

oh dear :/

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 July 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The 2 recent posts from blount & ally pretty much sum up my feelings w/r/t this.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

blount's list of those who are no longer on ILX much is depressing the hell out of me.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

that plus hangover are putting me in "new year's resolution" mode.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it's pretty grim isn't it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Blount said what I was thinking.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was kinda ironic that Kogan was the one who got me to hang out on ILX and soon after he stopped showing up as much. Which is fine. He has his reasons.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 31 July 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That 80's throwback thread on ILM is just silly and not really a reflection of the state of the nation or anything. It's more of a friday afternoon blowing off steam kinda thing. I actually hope there are more threads like that in the future (don't shoot me). A little loopiness can wake you up and ILM could use a little waking up. (just one person's opinion. and if I have been bored by ILM lately it probably has more to do with that list of people who never/hardly ever post than anything else.)
