How much is the wine tasting? I probably won't go.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Eric, you should mention that it's not really splurging financially b/c it's only $25!

Now I wish I had not gotten a so tanky last night and also wish I had not purchased the delicious Camel Wides. (these are the cigarettes that the God of Abraham made for his chosen people, like me)

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Who am I kiddin'? I've got to study.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

$25 to try dozens of sauvignon blancs and pinot noirs, lots of rare and good stuff.

Jenny, we'll help you study!

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"MCA, where have you been? Packed like sardines in a tin, so kick off your shoes and put on your swim fins"

This is what is in my head now.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

i liked camel wides, i smoked them a few years ago when they first came out. they were shorter than a regular cigarette but they're so wide that you get a lot more nicotine with each drag. kind of insideous, really.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

They are scrumptious. You get a huge mouthful of smokey yumminess with just a light draw. I want one right now! (But I can't smoke unless I'm drinking, elsewise I get sick - also, I think I left my pack at the site of last night's sodomy).

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I never liked Camel Wides. Yuck. I also never could stand Camel Filters. I would smoke a Camel Straight before a Filter or a Wide.

See, I feel like it would be a waste of $25 for me to go to a wine tasting. I just don't have a very developed wine palette. Pallete. Pallette. Pilot. Pellet. Whatever. I pretty much just like what other people tell me to like, and wish I was drinking a tasty craft brewed beer instead.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

"scrumptious" and "yumminess" are not words I associate with smoking mass produced American cigarettes. "Craving killing" and "nic fit alleviating" and "giving me something to do with my hands" maybe, but even when I was happily smoking the most I've ever smoked, I never thought cigarettes tasted good, much less "scrumptious" or "yummy."

Certain kinds of tobacco, sure. But not pre-fab cigarettes.

Man Man (kenan), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

This is the place to learn, Jenny, because you get to have little sips of all these different wines made from the same grapes in the same region, so you can get an idea of what you personally like - and the Gandolf-like New Zealand winemaker himself can tell you about it, or the Bailey Quarters-like head of marketing from the same winery.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Pellet! ha ha

You have enough of a pellet! I am not that good with tastings b/c my smeller is not very good.

What I think is helpful and fun is tasting by comparison. That's when you really get to see what a certain wine or other booze is all about.

Anyway, wine tasting can just be fun. You don't need to have a vitner's pellet in order to taste some interesting wines. Also it helps you hone your pellet.

I keep forgetting to mention to a manager at work that one of our pinot noirs comes up on the receipt as "Pinot Nouir"

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I never thought cigarettes tasted good, much less "scrumptious" or "yummy."

I think it's a problem with your pellet.

J/k, but I know what you mean. But in my humble, Camels are the exception to that rule.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Let's have another gander at Bailey, shall we?

http://tv.infinitecoolness.com/07/wkrp09.jpg

Ok, I'm done.

Man Man (kenan), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

So I just got an invitation to study with some people who are ostensibly in my wills and trusts class and I have no idea who any of the people are.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

It's a trap!

Or a set-up for an intervention.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm just going to ignore it. They probably want to steal one of my kidneys. I'll wake up in the library in a tub of ice with a note pinned to my arm that says "CALL 911."

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

OK, investigative types, someone start with some updates on the day w/out an immigrant. Is Chicago still functioning as normal?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

I haven't noticed much of anything. Then again, I live in a pretty insulated world. I expect most of the effect on my life will be in getting home today. Right now I'm trying to decided whether to ride the 2, 6 or x28 back north as usual and brave the masses, or take a bus over to the Green or Red line and ride that up. I hear those stations (Garfield/55th) are quite sketchy, but I'm a big dude, right?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

My housemate says there are mobs and mobs of people in the west loop, and lots more cops and helicopters than last time.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Per my co-clerk who just arrived - there are a lot of people gathering, they are coming in waves. It looks pretty crazy out there.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Dan, where do you work?

You'll be fine.

Did anyone notice if any restaurants or anything were closed?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Dan, where do you work?

1427 E. 60th

I know I'll probably be fine, I've just heard stories from other easily-scared white people.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Is THAT where Amanda is??

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

There is conflict with three or four skinheads on La Salle Street. Charles Williams, deputy superintendent of patrol, takes a handful of officers into the crowd and kicks them out. The crowd cheers the police, chanting "paz. (peace)."

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

She's shaved her head.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Racist skins vs sharps. ;__;

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

sharps?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice

Those dudes are still around?

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

those seem like good odds, 250,000 to 3.

it's going to take forever for me to get home today. i'd walk from the train station if i weren't more than 50% certain i'd be murdered before 8 blocks.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:55 (twenty years ago)

What?? Of course! Did they ever go anywhere? Or at least the guys I've known *identify* as sharps, whether they're officially members or not I dunno. It's just that Nazi/racist/NF-wannabees have been in the news more over the years -- nobody fucking remembers the rude boys.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:56 (twenty years ago)

That's kind of how I feel about leaving on the Green line from down here.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Well, I just thought it wasn't as big a thing as in the past. Maybe I am old and out of touch.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:57 (twenty years ago)

green line blows. the only time i was ever attacked on the el was on the green line. i don't know if they were on the platform or the car behind mine and saw what happened but as soon as the kids hit the platform at california some undercover cops jumped them and got two of the fuckers. other two got away.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Maybe I just live in a weird time capsule, Dan, cos everything I know abt the movement is from older people and not necessarily my own experience.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:02 (twenty years ago)

12:50 p.m.: Skinheads reappear at Jackson Boulevard and the alley called Holden Court, but retreat when they see police. Williams shouts to his troops, "Officers, stay with them." Police on foot and two on bicycles head down the alley to tail the skinheads, who appear to be the same group seen earlier.

The crowd now is chanting, "We want to pay taxes!"

I'm going to build this.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I hear those stations (Garfield/55th) are quite sketchy, but I'm a big dude, right?

They are really not that sketchy, especially in the afternoon, especially since you're a big dude. Red Line is safer than the Green, FYI.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it was one of my coworkers who told me that. I've never been to them, and only driven by one time. The way he told me was kind of funny though... One of the descriptors was "broken glass everywhere" followed in parentheses by "if it ain't about the money, puff, i just don't care."

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Weird. Yeah, especially since you won't be waiting for the bus and will actually be on the platform, you will be totally fine. You'll go and realize even the amount of precautions I'm giving you are totally unnecessary.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I've ridden the Green line to its terminus a couple times and never had any problems or even felt nervous but it was during normal commuting hours and I was with other people. Personally, I'm anxious about riding any train line alone after a certain hour, but I think that women, unfortunately, have a whole different spectrum of other people's behaviors to be wary of (so like, it's not just about being white in a predominantly black or latino neighborhood because I have just as much (arguably more) to fear from a drunk frat boy off Fullerton).

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

i've never felt unsafe on the train (with the exception of the interval of time that i was being assaulted on the green line) and i've ridden at all hours through all kinds of neighborhoods. but after a certain hour you definitely have to have your antenae up about who/what else is in your car with you.

that being said it seemed to me that there was always more pain-in-the-assity on the green line (which i rode daily my first 3 or 4 years in chicago) as opposed to the blue line (which i ride now). the panhandling is more aggressive and more rampant, that's the main thing.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

No shit, I a guy came through the car I was riding in the other day dragging a toddler along and asking for change. He swore up and down he didn't drink but he smelled like he had showered in vodka.

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Vodka kills the nits.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Hm, maybe I should invest in a handle of 5 O'Clock...

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Haymarket anniversary Thursday.

This is quite a week for labor.

Man Man (kenan), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

So this weekend I met this nice dude from Denmark who is sort of a "label mate" of mine -- we both have albums out on Tape Mountain; his band is called Low Fire and you can download an album -- and he is travelling around the US with some Danish friends. They are headed to Chicago in maybe a week. I'm hoping they manage to arrange some sort of show, which I'm hoping some of you might go to, especially if you like poppy songs about depression sung by underage Danish guys. It works!

In other news, a day without Mexicans is like a day without pretty flowers.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

They are headed to Chicago in maybe a week.

unless i read the flyer wrong, they were at the bottle on the 29th.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm too busy to read or contribute this afternoon, so I'll just drop this thought:

If you smoke after sex, you're doing it too fast.

I'll be here all week.
