RI = much much better than Boston. Now, if only Boston commuters would stop moving to Providence..
I had never been to Boston until this year.. and.. all the historical landmarks + the Isabelle Gardner (sp?) museum = classic, but.. wow ! why does everyone look the same & are all rich & wearing ribbed turtleneck sweaters ? why can't you buy a cool pair of shoes anywhere ? why is everyone in such a bad mood !?

Um, the Phillies and the Orioles have won World Series in my lifetime. Which is more than can be said for the Red Sox. Another plus for the Phillies and the Orioles: when their ballparks get run-down and go to seed, they tear them down and build new ones. (same criticism goes for the Cubs, too)

and oh yeah those beloved Yankees and Mets really tore it up this year.

At least the Yankees made it to the playoffs. And I hate the Mets, so I'm probably just as happy as you are that they sucked (and will continue to suck).

yep, they have one champioships in our lifetimes. but i think the sox have a better chance of winning one before either of those two teams do. Granted if the Phils get Thome, then it gets interesting. But their pitching staff does nothing for me. Neither does the Red Sox staff for that matter. When John Burkett is your number 3, there is plenty reason to worry. Ugh I hate being a Boston sports fan. Although my Bruins are tearing it up this year.

I had fun, although I kept driving around in circles at the junctions of Route 1, I-95, 278(? -- the road that goes to Marblehead/Beverly) and 114 each time I tried to go from anywhere. It was the Blair Witch project of driving ("AIEEE!! We were just here!!) But now I understand why New Englanders give such strange directions: There is no such thing as a plain left turn, right turn, or a street that keeps its same name past more than a few lights. "Curl around right" is a valid and useful direction. And Dunkin' Donuts really is a very convenient landmark.

I think Mary would like Salem Willows. Skee Ball has gone up to 25 cents from a dime but it's still fun.

Ha ha, Dan was right -- I was much more charitable in my assessment of the area when visiting in the summer. Usually I would say Boston is full of pretentious, racist assholes and Fenway is an overrated dump. But I was tooling around the North Shore at that time, not driving through downtown Boston, which is perpetually under construction and the signs say "DETOUR: bridge" when they mean "tunnel" and vice versa. David Raposa and Chris V., you know I love you guys, but in the main, Boston has the most fickle, bitter, fair-weather sports fans in America and I cannot stand them.

Anyway, the following comment of Tad's has just come to my attention:

I still don't understand why Tad wants to tear down Wrigley Field. Oriole Park or Camden Yards or Cal Ripken Jr. Shrine or whatever it's called is modeled on Wrigley. It's the best place in the whole world!
