Is that in the downstairs bit of Tom's, cleverly designed to resemble Joseph Fritzl's dungeon?

(Nice poster btw)

Eh, I'll download that mix later.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 11:42 (fourteen years ago) link

The very same dungeon! Thanks.

So peoples, shall we move from South London to Brighton?

I've always loved the place I'm kinda firmly in Gareth's "people move there to 'escape' london, but they all escape to the same damn place taking the worst bits of london with them. all the bad of london concentrated in a small area, with none of the good bits." camp.

Argh...

Background Zombie (CharlieNo4), Tuesday, 8 September 2009 13:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I've no problem people moving to Brighton from London, as long as they chill the fuck out and cheer the fuck up! I'm sure you'll fit in fine, having met you before and remembering you seemed like a friendly chap.

two months pass...

ILXBrightoners - I'm looking for some parking advice (yes, this a thrilling question). We're heading down from London by car. I've learnt from repeated bitter experience that I can lose up to an hour in traffic jams crawling into town on the A23 and then queueing for a parking space on the fourteenth floor of a concrete car park, so what we normally do is go round to Falmer, then into town via Woodingdean and past the racecourse and park up in a side street off Queen's Park Road.

I don't really fancy this tomorrow because we're heading to Seven Dials, which is a bit of a walk from Queen's Park Road, with a pushchair, in the forecast pouring rain and gale force winds. If I headed into town on Dyke Road instead, how close could I get to Seven Dials before it's all permit-only parking? Brighton are playing at home tomorrow as well - does that affect things?

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 27 November 2009 16:57 (fourteen years ago) link

the streets will be blocked by weeping, prostrated brighton fans, having watched their team ship 23 goals at home

Kick off's not till 3pm, so even if the mighty Rushden & Diamonds do pull off such an unlikely victory, the weeping seasiders shouldn't trouble my lunchtime drive in.

haha oops

we're playing there NEXT week

damn

Got no idea about parking near Seven Dials, but if you really get stuck, you could head to the main station car park, which is only about 10 mins walk away from there. And yes, Dyke Road is a much better way in to town than the A23 afaik.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 27 November 2009 17:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Argh. My friend gave me some permits for around that area, as I live right in the centre of town where the waiting lists are ridiculous and there aren't any spaces anyway. But it's probably not going to be feasible to actually find a way to get them to you, is it? Hmmm. I'm not sure where free parking starts, so I can't be of help there. My only other suggestions would be to try the parking behind the station - should be £6 for a day, I think. Or... apparently another friend found some free parking near the Duke of York's picture house, which is on Preston Circus - much closer than where you usually park.

This thread has been pretty quiet of late - any Brightonians up to anything? Pre-ATP schedule for me is quiet weekend, with the Has films on Sunday, Six Organs of Admittance on Monday, and Box Elders on Wednesday.

I'm at Six Organs! Will say hello!

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 27 November 2009 17:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Excellent! It's not likely to sell out, is it? We haven't got tickets yet...

emil.y, Friday, 27 November 2009 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't really know! Don't think it said anything to that effect in the last Resident update though, so you'll probably be alright.

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Friday, 27 November 2009 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Did you go to 6 Organs emil.y? I missed it cos I've been shut up at home with the lurgy. One I've been looking forward to for ages as well :(

The bugger in the short sleeves (NickB), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, we went. And I'm sorry to say it, but it was brilliant. Hope you get well soon.

Hey I'm playing tonight at The White Rabbit if anyone is after something to do. Techno, Dubstep, House, Garage, Disco all mixed up in a drunkenly hyperactive (but hopefully smoothly) fashion. I'm going to start things quite slowly with some dance-flavoued post-rock sounds (think Insides, Seefeel and MBV) from 8 and then raise the tempo. Come and say hi!

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 30 January 2010 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I gotta be in tonight, but that sounds good. Setlist please!

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I doubt I'll be able to remember because I like to play as the mood fits me, but I'm going to be starting with a selection from:

Insides - Skinned Clean {and maybe Skyicking too}
MBV - Soon (Weatherall remix)
Seefeel - Spangle
Section 25 - Looking from a Hilltop
Delia Gonazales and Gavin Russom - Relevee (Carl Craig remix)

And then onto some slow deep house and techno tracks.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 30 January 2010 18:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Never been big on Insides, but that looks good!

Aha, awesome. The mister's going to see if he can get tickets today, but I don't think it's sold out yet, so all should be well.

emil.y, Monday, 1 February 2010 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

The Resident ticket listing says 'selling fast', but you should be okay.

Dunno if Matt feels like punking out... ?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Monday, 1 February 2010 15:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Come on Matt, let's FAP! (In the ilx0r sense, not the rude rest-of-internet sense).

Manage to get a ticket emil.y?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 13:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes indeed.

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Hooray! Am meeting someone outside at 7, just in case it's an early start. Gonna find out the running times and then bugger off to the pub if time allows. So if you get there early...

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't think we'll be there dead on 7, but we're unlikely to be much later, as I think Audio shows are relatively prompt.

Btw, I don't think I have *any* idea what you look like, so you'll have to come over and say hi if you spot me.

emil.y, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 14:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Will do. Look out for a nondescriptish bloke okay?

We should have called Suzie and Bobby (NickB), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey, hope you made it home okay! Sorry if I was a bit tipsy...

Also: what a show! Absolutely brilliant.

I guess this isn't really an ilx sort of thing, but me and the mister are DJing some indiepop next Friday if anyone fancies coming along. It's free to get in, so you could turn up for a pint and then run away.

Didn't spot this until now - Tom's Bar: It's a cursed venue I tell ye!

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 20 September 2010 09:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Not as cursed as the Freebutt it would seem.

jesper olsen twins (NickB), Monday, 20 September 2010 10:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but the Freebutt was never a sex dungeon. Thus, Tom's wins.

What's happening with the Freebutt now? I heard that it might be saved or something? Has that fallen through again?

emil.y, Monday, 20 September 2010 10:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not really in the loop there. Not been any updates on the webpage either:

http://savethefreebutt.blogspot.com/

jesper olsen twins (NickB), Monday, 20 September 2010 10:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I think as it stands (I last heard about a month ago) the Freebutt is open, but until they can afford to play for 20–30k of sound insulation they have a sound restriction in place restricting the volume to below that of an unamplified drummer, which means folk acts and spoken word pretty much only downstairs. Upstairs is allowed to open on similar sound restriction levels.

Just checked online and that's what seems to be on the page Nick posted.

anything going on gig or club-wise on the 16th? would be good to feel a bit of the local culture on my flying conference visit.

Hm, couldn't really think of anything so had a look at the Source - nothing particularly exciting that day, I have to say.
