Re: Letterman's audience and thier laughter.

His show gets taped at 4:00 PM EST. The audience is largley people who were standing in line to get in to the show and/or wandering around Manhattan doing tourist shit all day and not clicking "refresh" on tmz.com and reading 600 post threads on the topic. Even with a joke about it in the monologue or whatever, there's a good chance most people there really didn't know the context. And yeah, it was a super-weird idea to have his first public appearance be on Letterman, especially if they didn't fill the audience (both television and studio) in on what happened last week.

To me the saddest part is that I heard reports on the morning news today that when he returned to the club the following night, he was supposed to have made some kind of apology, but he didn't. He waited until Monday afternoon, and still seemed like he hadn't really come to terms with it himself. I may be reaching here, but it seems like he didn't realize what he did was so worng until the vieo was all over the internet and the half of the country that wasn't talking about OJ was talking about him.

Letterman did give an overview of the situation both in the monologue and in his conversation with Seinfeld before the interview w/Richards started. He just didn't really convey the severity of the offense--coulda been a "haha celebrity embarasses self" thing, in which case them coming on to apologize would be sorta funny, but since it was a string of racial epithets followed by a lynching reference it was actually kinda bad. So yeah, I think it's good that Seinfeld shushed 'em, but you're right that they probably didn't have a full understanding of the context.

Didn't Richards say something in his Letterman appearance about going back to the club and trying to make amends or something?

I wouldn't want Clay Aiken touching me either, he's a freak no matter what his sexuality is.

He is Thom Yorke's double, except his hair is somehow even uglier.

Beth S. (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

NEW YORK — Kelly Ripa's definitely not a Claymate.

The talk show host went off on Aiken Monday morning on "Live With Regis and Kelly," saying "I don't think he was respectful in any way." She said Aiken was hostile toward her when they shared co-hosting duties on Friday's show.

She especially took issue with Aiken putting his hands over her mouth during an interview. She said you don't do that, even if it's for a laugh.

Ripa told Clay his actions were a "no, no," adding "I don't know where that hand's been, honey."

Regis Philbin said he's shocked the pair didn't hit it off, saying, "In my wildest dreams would I ever think that one day you would have a feud with Clay Aiken."

On The View" Tuesday, Rosie O'Donnell said Ripa's remark about Aiken's hand was homophobic. Aiken has been dogged by speculation about his sexuality but he's never answered.

ever talk to a convicted murderer? they always have excuses and reasons and context too. they don't want to be judged and labeled on their one mistake either.

Wow, so you basically think that people who kill out of self-defense are the same as, say, Ted Bundy? I mean, there's context. That can go either way: speak in defense of the person who killed or against him/her.

I think it's hilarious Kelly said:"I don't know where his hand's been." Certainly not homophobic, just extremely silly.

any idea what that means? didn't think so.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, so you basically think that people who kill out of self-defense are the same as, say, Ted Bundy? I mean, there's context.

belaboring the point, but people who legitimately kill in self-defense are often not convicted of murder. "convicted murderer" is someone who, whatever their claims of context or extenuating circumstances, has been judged guilty of murder.

anyway, in this case, there's no contextual basis for saying richards is not a racist. i'm sorry if it pains people to call people who give racist rants "racist," but for the word to have any meaning i think we probably have to.

i'm just saying the matter is quite a bit more complicated, & as i recall, segregated or not (and they never all were) freemason lodges tended to land on the side of abolitionism.

xposty: right, but scrolling back through masonry's "rich heritage" we certainly have masonic slave-owners. A recent zealot mason like Richards would probably be aware of the entire history enough to cop a superior attitude, like "we freed the slaves, you know." That whole bit where Richards says the key to masonry is "know thyself" seems fairly ironic as it's clear he either doesn't know shit or is up to creepy shenanigans wrt race relations.
