I was always so baffled by her when she first came on the show, because I thought she was white and figured she was adopted or something but Cliff and Clair just didn't want to make an issue out of it.

I Was baffled by her because in the pilot episode they make mention of how they have four children, and then all of a sudden mid-season they magically generated a older light-skinned Princeton student who was retconned into the family; I kept expecting The Watcher to burst in and shout "THIS SHOULD NOT BE".

That too! I figured they didn't count her as one of their children because she was adopted though! It was weird the way she suddenly turned up out of nowhere.
