Might I add:

Being stoned in public freaked me out for years. But at some point that changed, and I got to really enjoy being stoned in crowds, at bars, concerts, in long one-on-one conversations, whatever. Being comfortable stoned in social situations gave me a weird kind of confidence -- like, if I can be stoned and still be comfortable despite the self-consciousness, then being comfortable when I'm straight is a breeze. That said, after smoking with renewed interest for several years in my late 20s and early 30s, I've kind of tailed of for various circumstantial reasons.
The last time I smoked was at my dad's 60th birthday party. I shared a pipe with him, his cousin, my aunt, my little brother and my little brother's girlfriend. Family bonging. It was sweet.

surprised no one has addressed this. i don't doubt that pot affected your uncle's mind but i've never heard of any sort of altered DNA effect except from those ridiculous teen-scare films they showed in high school. and plenty of non-potheads have children with l.d.

weed + Loveless = nakedness = saturday night, and it was GOOOOOOOOD. but i know what you mean - its a knife-edge thing, and i hate when i'm so stoned that i become a less-than-entirely-attentive lover. but saturday was *perfect*.
wrt weed easing anxiety, i certainly prefer it to booze, which messes with my mood... but with weed, when i'm being social, i'm conscious that i'm kinda dopey, and in the wrong company that can make me anxious... but i still retain a clarity that booze usually robs me of, so by the end of the night everyone's loopy from booze and will feel shit the next day, but i'll be feeling fine.

thai stick OTM. The altered DNA/pot connection is a myth. Though there is some evidence that pot smoking can interfere w/male reporductive system (in the same way that cig smoking does). And apart from dyslexia (which isn't associated w/ speech delay) there is scant evidence of a genetic basis for learning disabilities at least those on the autism spectrum.

In answer to the question: classic, as long as it's not a wake-up, skin-up habit. Christ only knows how I got through my first year at university. Classic for: beer substitute while watching TV, sex, computer games, putting yourself to sleep, attending parties last Saturday with crazy northern Irish lads who are doing their best to prove that stereotypes do exist.Dud: for sapping motivation and hiding from your life.

I didn't do drugs of any kind until I was about 24, when I smoked some hash, which I didn't like (I've done other drugs here and there, but very infrequently). It took a while to warm up to weed, but once I did, I became a fairly regular smoker - not a 'wake and bake' guy or anything, but at least 4-5 times a week. This went on for several years, and pretty much ended when I moved to the UK 2 years ago.
I suppose me and most of my friends would be considered 'potheads', but I'd like to think that we're in the favourable camp - i.e. we don't just act stupid and talk about weed - we have proper conversations about the world we live in and life in general. Often these conversations are more vibrant than if we were just sitting around sober or with a few beers. And yes - this has also been the sentiment from non-smokers who were with us. And even though I smoked a lot during this period of my late 20s/early30s, I managed to have an active social life, have a couple of very senior jobs, ran club nights, got a M.B.A., etc. Weed to me and most of my friends was just a treat - something that is a 'condiment' as someone upthread said - rather than the central focus of social interaction.
Unfortunately, during my final days in Toronto, some friends have fallen into the 'dull stoner' category, where they just haven't progressed. I've seen some geuninely hyper-intelligent people become, well, stupid. And one friend has become a full-blown 'addict' (as he puts it) who is now seeing a therapist. Granted, he has his own issues (which include alcohol as well), but the weed didn't help. Another problem is that I find weed makes me congested - when I go to sleep my breathing is very restricted, which is annoying. Plus I'm not fond of the fog/haze that I sometimes get in the morning after a night of many joints, which my friends do favour (I like a little bit - giant blunts are just not necessary IMO).
I don't like being associated with pot culture, which I guess is a bit snobby of me, but I'd always clean up the apartment from pot accessories (removing the bong is key) when guests were coming over. I really don't think this was a result of being paranoid - I just don't like looking like an obvious stoner from first glance. I'd never lie about my smoking - I'm happy to admit it - although I still haven't talked about it with my parents, which is a bit silly I suppose, but there ya go.
Anyway, when I left Canada (a weed-friendly country, of course - we had home delivery guys with their own fridge magnets and everything) my weed smoking became a rare treat, which is how I like it. I don't really want to return to being a regular smoker, because I have noticed that I am a lot more clear-headed these days, and when I do smoke it is a lot more fun, rather than just 'maintenance'. I wish my friends were at this point, and hopefully they will be soon.
for me:weed + watching hockey = classicweed + music = very classicweed + hanging with immature stoners = dudweed + social functions where most are non-smokers = kinda dud, but dependsweed + dance clubs/gigs = classicweed + sitting on the dock at the cottage in summertime = ULTIMATE CLASSIC
