I'm too young to have watched WKRP. And my parents didn't believe in TV for most of my childhood.

xpost: ditto to MASH

Holy makkara, Toivo! (OutDatWay), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Post your WKRP memories here.

the one where mother carlson hires an outside consultant to tell her what's wrong the station and they totally pull the wool over the dudes eyes. specifically the alleged racial tension between venus and johnny fever. that scene always cracks me up.

i saw the barney miller where wojo's girlfriend bakes him hash brownies and he brings them to the station. fave scene:

barney: "Harris! I think there's something in these brownies, find out what it is."
harris: [pops brownie in his mouth] "I think it's hash barn..."

I LOVE Barney Miller. Still. That's a great show. Even the theme song is awesome.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:09 (twenty years ago)

My favorite was always the cynical smart dude with glasses, whose name I cannot remember.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm going around the apartment singing "Four-Oh-Seven-Seveeen" to the tune of "Suicide is Painless"

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Steve Landesberg, don't know what his character's name was.

Jesse, I wish we had grown up without television. My apologies. The herbs are beautiful.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

I grew up with three channels, but Barney Miller was on broadcast TV. LUCKY ME!

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:16 (twenty years ago)

yemana: "hey barney, wanna go down to the beach and shoot some clams?"

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Dietrich! Yes. I had a crush on him. Dietrich and the Hardy Boys prompted the first stirrings of my heterosexuality.

LOL @ Eric!

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

And my parents didn't believe in TV for most of my childhood.

i wasn't the only deprived child barely allowed to watch tv, oh good. now i try to watch obscene amounts of tv to make up for it.

luckily, not being allowed twinkies or the like failed to elicit the same longterm reaction. as much.

Juulia (julesbdules), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Huh. Marylin Manson covers "Suicide is Painless"

That's hard to imagine.

Where can I download this crap for free?

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:24 (twenty years ago)

same deal with the tv as me. we didn't even have cable until i was in high school.

With regard to TV: me three!

The History of Televsion in My House
By Jersey Queer

In N. MN we had 3 channels, but only was allowed to watch PBS. Reg channels were for the news and for very special occasions or times when I could sneak in some Who's the Boss. We had black and white until 1985.

When my grades dropped to crap in gradeschool my dad threw the TV out into the snow.

In rurrrral MT we had ONE station. I've watched every single episode of Family Ties and Andy Griffith.

Now I have DVR.

Oh, that's going to be a best-seller.

Well, Amanda or no Amanda: On the day that she called me Sir Shopsalot I had made a big purchase that I was not sure I was going to announce until I had tested it and saw if it could change my life.

This is it.

It is wonderful. Big but wonderful.

Far from it. I've known a lot of people like this. Curiously, they are not on average any smarter or more motivated than anyone else.

And we still don't get shitty sitcom references.

You know, you'd think I slept with a Chinaman, b/c I just spent the night f'ing and now I'm horny again.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

i almost bought one of those last year. i realized i don't cook enough to justify it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh! I met a Vietnamese guy last night at the comedy show who grew up with mostly whites and blacks. At his school they would make fun of asians by doing "Me Chinese, me play joke" and similar childhood mockery.

He said that he would join in thinking that they were mocking somebody else because he thought he was latino.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:45 (twenty years ago)

His name is Yao, for shit's sake.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

J, it's always worse when you're just getting A LITTLE. In my experience, at least.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

That's pretty funny. And sad.

Yao's plight, not the sex part.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Hey, you're all invited to splurge on theNew Zealand Wine Expo at the MCA tonight. Dozens of great wines, Puck catering, etc.

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Go to the wine tasting w/ me Jenny! Please? You need wine.

Yao said he was in a Southside High School doing some sort of presentation and the students (100% African American) were talking about how he was "a white guy, but a different kind of white."

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

This is so going on the excelsior thread.

Man Man (kenan), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

How much is the wine tasting? I probably won't go.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Eric, you should mention that it's not really splurging financially b/c it's only $25!

Now I wish I had not gotten a so tanky last night and also wish I had not purchased the delicious Camel Wides. (these are the cigarettes that the God of Abraham made for his chosen people, like me)

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Who am I kiddin'? I've got to study.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

$25 to try dozens of sauvignon blancs and pinot noirs, lots of rare and good stuff.

Jenny, we'll help you study!

Eazy (Eazy), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

"MCA, where have you been? Packed like sardines in a tin, so kick off your shoes and put on your swim fins"

This is what is in my head now.

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

i liked camel wides, i smoked them a few years ago when they first came out. they were shorter than a regular cigarette but they're so wide that you get a lot more nicotine with each drag. kind of insideous, really.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

They are scrumptious. You get a huge mouthful of smokey yumminess with just a light draw. I want one right now! (But I can't smoke unless I'm drinking, elsewise I get sick - also, I think I left my pack at the site of last night's sodomy).

Whispy Fandango Triphop (unclejessjess), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I never liked Camel Wides. Yuck. I also never could stand Camel Filters. I would smoke a Camel Straight before a Filter or a Wide.

See, I feel like it would be a waste of $25 for me to go to a wine tasting. I just don't have a very developed wine palette. Pallete. Pallette. Pilot. Pellet. Whatever. I pretty much just like what other people tell me to like, and wish I was drinking a tasty craft brewed beer instead.

Safety First (pullapartgirl), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

"scrumptious" and "yumminess" are not words I associate with smoking mass produced American cigarettes. "Craving killing" and "nic fit alleviating" and "giving me something to do with my hands" maybe, but even when I was happily smoking the most I've ever smoked, I never thought cigarettes tasted good, much less "scrumptious" or "yummy."

Certain kinds of tobacco, sure. But not pre-fab cigarettes.
