Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell says a drowning man doesn't care what color the person is who throws him a life preserver.
"This election is going to be decided when a husband and wife sit at a kitchen table, or a single parent sits at the kitchen table, looks at their bills and figures out who is most likely to help them with their financial condition," Rendell said. "If the answer's Barack Obama, nobody's going to care whether he's black, green, orange, purple, fuchsia or whatever."

Yeah I saw that quote, too, PP. I think it's hilarious the way this election is about to be decided by racist, uneducated, homophobic, pro-life, pro-gun nitwits who suddenly and miraculously decide that when their own WALLETS are at stake, a black Democrat for president starts seeming like the best choice.
Much like the hardline economist neo-cons who have insisted at every turn that in order for the economy (and everything else) to function well, government has to stay out of things and who are now (surprise!) turning to the government to bail out a problem created by the unbridled free-market capitalism they praise so highly and so often. I've got half a mind to look up my Republifascist economics professor from the early 00's and ask him how he feels about government intervention NOW. Then kick him to the curb.

JP: Dizzee Rascal, Mr Rascal, do you feel yourself to be British?
DR: Of course I'm British, man! You know me! ... what's good. I think it don't matter what colour you are, it matters what colour your heart is and your intentions. I think a black man, purple man, Martian man can run the country ... as long as he does right by the people.

Spitzer’s Father Denies Bias Against Employees
“I did not see a white doorman or a black doorman,” Mr. Spitzer said.Mr. Ofodile immediately challenged that assertion, and Mr. Spitzer quickly elaborated.“I don’t see the blackness or whiteness or pinkness or yellowness of a doorman,” he said. “I have a mind that focuses on the fact that he is a doorman and functions as a doorman.”
Mr. Ofodile immediately challenged that assertion, and Mr. Spitzer quickly elaborated.

In the sharpest exchange during Mr. Spitzer’s hour on the stand, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Anthony C. Ofodile, pushed to get him to admit that he was conscious of the race of the building’s doormen and porters.“I did not see a white doorman or a black doorman,” Mr. Spitzer said.Mr. Ofodile immediately challenged that assertion, and Mr. Spitzer quickly elaborated.“I don’t see the blackness or whiteness or pinkness or yellowness of a doorman,” he said. “I have a mind that focuses on the fact that he is a doorman and functions as a doorman.”Mr. Spitzer testified without any hint of anger and was unruffled during cross-examination. He wore a charcoal gray suit and light blue tie. When not testifying, Mr. Spitzer kept his right hand on his metal cane and occasionally fiddled with the hearing aid in his left ear. At times, he seemed to nod off, his chin tucked into his chest. Mr. Spitzer was hospitalized for Parkinson’s disease after his son resigned in March, but he has made public appearances since then in much improved condition....In his opening statement, Mr. Ofodile repeatedly insisted that Mr. Spitzer knew these men and was personally involved in running the 34-story, 145-apartment building on 57th Street. In the lawsuit, Mr. Haydenn asserted that Mr. Spitzer had told the building’s supervisor that he did not want black or darker-skinned Hispanics working at the building.Mr. Haydenn said that the reason his supervisor gave for his dismissal was that there were urine stains found on one of the toilets he had cleaned.“In this case, the plaintiffs were fired by the defendant based on their race,” Mr. Ofodile said. Their dismissals caused some of his clients marital problems, hypertension and emotional distress, the lawyer said.In her opening statement, Jennifer Rubin, the lead lawyer for Mr. Spitzer, said, “Mr. Spitzer did not know the plaintiffs, did not know the color of their skin, and if he did not know the color of their skin he could not discriminate against them on that basis.”

schef, pls cite me some allegations that he treated them poorly. all i see are allegations that he told someone else to fire dark-skinned doormen, and that the plaintiffs are doormen who were fired.

sorry, "your"
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, dude, it's always a little cheap to gag on testimony like this, and yes, his answer is clearly trying to see "I simply view this person as an employee with a specific function," and yes, the joke makes a slight assumption that he didn't treat his employees with much respect regardless of race, BUT BUT the original gag is actually kinda supported by his wording and not THAT cheap:
I have a mind that focuses on the fact that he is a doorman and functions as a doorman.
... because "is a doorman and functions as a doorman" is somewhat rhetorically distinct from "is a person who happens to be employed as a doorman"

Bernard Spitzer was on the premises of each of these buildings on a daily basis, was fully aware of the harassment and racial slurs outlined in our lawsuit and it is clear that although we were harassed and terminated by Gumly Haft management, it was at the direction of Bernard Spitzer.
