Oh yes. It is. Especially when I've got to go and get a train in about an hour, and will then be offline until Monday.
Last time I try to do new-apple-product-on-day-one, this.
― JimD, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link
This is why I never try to do ANY new techie product on day one; working in software has made me JADED.
― HI DERE, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:07 (fifteen years ago) link
Oh, something weird just happened. Plugged in again, and even though the apple store is still failing on me, the phone started up this time.
Still can't see itunes, so can't sync anything. But it seems to be working happily apart from that.
― JimD, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:09 (fifteen years ago) link
oh shit, it's working!!
SSSSSHHHHHHH
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link
Ok, maps being able to pinpoint my location to within about 50 yards is very impressive.
― JimD, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link
only problem is that my .mac account hasn't really turned into a .me account yet, so i'm a little sketched-out about trusting the push synchronization. we'll see how it goes ... but i can see my calendars on the phone right now which is pretty dope.
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link
Is this worth unjailbreaking for?
― Casuistry, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:51 (fifteen years ago) link
I've been looking at the same headlines on this shitty NYT app since yesterday morning. 15 minutes to update? FFS, the thing goes to sleep twice in that time. How much data is it downloading? What a crock of shit.
Can't get into me.com at all.
― stet, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link
Appstore is, Casuistry, haven't seen any apps like this for installer.app
nyt mobile site is actually pretty good, if you've never used it, fwiw. 15 mins is a total joke though.
― toby, Friday, 11 July 2008 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link
what's the consensus on the worth of mobileme? folks who have - why'd you buy it?
― czn, Friday, 11 July 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link
i think you need it for "push synchronization"?
i'm not at all a technical guy, so i just wanted to be able to have sync'd email, calendars, contacts and notes between phone, home computer and work computer. since they're all macs i figured it was the easiest way to go.
― moonship journey to baja, Friday, 11 July 2008 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link
i've had .mac forever for the syncing between computers. now that it syncs to the phone wirelessly w/ push, even better. i still use my gmail as my main contact, though.
― cutty, Friday, 11 July 2008 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link
Just now it's pointless. Can't get in at all in Safari, can just about with Firefox. I wonder if my email-only account is causing problems.
I'm thinking about buying it just for the sync calendars. An exchange set up would be cheaper, but you know, yeuch.
― stet, Friday, 11 July 2008 20:10 (fifteen years ago) link
do you all remember in RAW when eddie murphy was walking around going "we got mcdonald's" in an eight-year-old voice? i'm sorta doing that right now w/ the iphone.

killer apps but lots of bugs. some apps crash and just go straight to the home screen like AIM) and some crash the phone, causing immediate reboot. lack of the wall in the facebook app is actually KILLER WIN because i can now actually, like, keep track of my friends instead of all this Poking and shit. I would've liked that Google app if it had a Reader & gTalk but, and while it links you to webapps that are pretty damn serviceable, it's doesn't have quite the functionality of a proper app. super monkey ball is helllllllla fun and hard as well. i tried buying that crazy synthesizer but am having problems downloading it. might be the coolest thing on there though...
― BATTAGS, Sunday, 13 July 2008 06:38 (fifteen years ago) link
So I got the PhoneSaber thing. And yeah, I like it.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 06:41 (fifteen years ago) link
White iphone looks silly because it's white on the back and black on the front. This is why I've gone for a black in 16gB (raincheck).

but i can see my calendars on the phone right now which is pretty dope.
I have this on my itouch. greatest thing evah.
― stevienixed, Sunday, 13 July 2008 08:33 (fifteen years ago) link
Me too. I had MacSaber on my Macbook anyway, so my journey to the nerd side is now complete.
The WeatherBug app blows the iPhone's built-in Weather app out of the water. Full current weather and forecast info on one screen, up-to-date radar on another, and local weather webcams on a third. Outstanding.

so do i need to take my phone into the apple store to get it upgraded to the 2.0 software?
― homosexual II, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:24 (fifteen years ago) link
Oh god no. You can update it through iTunes.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 13 July 2008 16:26 (fifteen years ago) link
pp and i are having fun with Shazam like "quick, turn on MTV...WOW! Okay let me turn on the radio...WOAH! Okay lets see if it knows what my ringtone is...OMG!"

Anyone with a loft bed is going to LOVE the iTunes remote app. I've been using it to change music while reading in bed without getting up.

hm. Jules' MacBook just has a remote control.

(nb: i'm keeping it old-skool with 1.whatever. DELAYED GRATIFICATION, yo. and nowhere near enough time to actually play with this shit. tomorrow morning i intend to get up at sparrow-fart and GEEK THE FUCK OUT.)
Winter Hill. It actually has all of the takeout/sandwich shops on Boradway in its database but no one's reviewed any of them yet.

Sunny, if you love shazam you should try midomi. You can just HUM to it and it works the song out!
Just realised that if I dig out my ipod AV cable, and plug my iphone into the telly with it, then via safari, I can do bbc iplayer without my PC. Wow.
Weatherbug is much less cool if you're outside the US, sadly.
And am I just being dense with Remote? When I open it on the phone, it gives me a passcode. But I don't know how or where to put that into itunes. Anyone?
― JimD, Monday, 14 July 2008 00:37 (fifteen years ago) link
Oh wait, just figured out remote.
