i'm visiting portland for a week starting tomorrow. can anyone recommend a dj/dance night, or good shows in general? willamette week hasn't updated its music listings yet, don't know where else to check.

also would be interested in hearing about anything else particularly cool going on. excited!

Never been to any of them but my brother-in-law seems to always be DJing at some club somewhere when he's not a philosophy professor at other places. I know he veers pretty heavy towards hip-hop rather than straight up dance:

hip-hop's not really my dancing choice, but thanks for the suggestion. may look at the list of clubs he spins at and see if they have other, more electronic-dancey nights

holocene is the first best choice for dance music, depending what's going on. also check a night called Nightclubbing (i think their myspace has the most up-to-date info). they do it at various venues, might be a monthly.

Dunes is... not very cool. It's like a haven for underagers with fake IDs mostly.

You could always come to my DJ night Thursdays! But it's at a rock & roller dive bar where I get looked at sideways for playing like bizarre love triangle, much less being able to keep a sustained dance thing going on.

I have various other gigs too but they're more irregular. Second Saturday here, one Friday every three months there, etc. Everybody's a DJ in Portland, it's hard to get gigs/get noticed!

last time i was in portland i saw chromatics at holocene & then danced, it was great. i'll be gone by the time prins rolls through, too bad. thanks for the tips. i definitely want to check out the doug fir, i missed it last time.

no, but they have decent beer now and still have the stiffest drinks in town, probably. sometimes there is a terrible spanish-language rock band that opens for me. god i should have this thread de-googled now so i don't get fired!

Check the Portland Mercury for events. You have stuff like Rock Band Night at Ground Kontrol on tuesday, or $5 free-play there on wednesday night all night. There's also the Fez for dancin'.

Saturday, they're showing "The Room" at Cinema 21 and I'll be damned if I'm not going.

Thankig u for the many stuff goin on updates, they are v useful for the bored and locally friendless (yo).

Sunday is the pug playdate in the off-leash area of Irving Park at Fremont & NE 7th at like 2:30pm or so. It's always amusing.

And yeah I'll get a beer! Mini-FAP should happen at some point, though I should warn my work schedule is shit and I'm not available many nights until like 12:30.

W I L L, go see Atole at Work/Sound on the 28th. They always put on a great dance party with live music.

And if you swing the other way, my doom metal band of 12 years -- Witch Mountain, is playing at Dante's on the 28th with Jucifer and Lickity (a synth/punk duo featuring the original drummer from FEAR).

If I just want someone to travel to for a solo vacation, hang around and catch some local food and stuff and do low-key stuff for a few days, is Portland a decent idea at this time of the year?

It's an awesome place to do that kind of vacation where you just hang around, eat out, and basically act like you live there and it's just a long weekend.

I will temporarily be in SW off Barbour, hopefully moving to north somewhere near the yellow line (seems to be the area that with the most optimal combination of affordability/convenience) soon. Any location advice accepted and appreciated.
