Fiennes is def a lock for a nom, but Brody prob the front-runner for the win. Anyway, good movie. I had fun.

also love how the movie establishes lithgow's character as a prissy twit in the first scene, before we're given any real reasons to hate him

Watching this movie made me realize that I'm guilty of simony. I have bought Catholic Church relics from a NY purveyor. They are beautiful and meaningful to me. Many came in lockets, a few in monstrances, and one was mounted in a beautiful frame. I have lived with them, contemplated them and displayed them, but now as I'm getting older I don't know who to gift them to. I have a friend who is also interested in them, but I'm not sure he wants mine.
What do you do with stolen Catholic Church relics you bought that you want to pass on?
I bet none of you have ever had this experience
I loved the outcome of this film by the way, it was perfect.
― Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:52 (one year ago)
Relics? like you have a digit of a saint's index finger?
― rainbow calx (lukas), Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:59 (one year ago)
No, just a very tiny piece of cloth or paper or wood presented in an elaborate frame of some sort
But I think these are the kind of relics that are placed under the altar in many Catholic Churches.
― Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:06 (one year ago)
I’ll give you $100 for the foreskin of Jesus.
― papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:15 (one year ago)
The difficulty with buying items from a dealer who represents them as stolen is the lack of provenance. Your relics could be consecrated or they could be fakes. Unless there's some evidence to establish where they came from no church could accept them as objects of veneration. That would be idolatrous! So, you're most likely stuck with trying to re-establish their authenticity on your own dime, or just disposing of them as profane objects, even if they are truly holy relics.
Boy, are you in trouble!

This was good. Love a page turner on the big screen. I could have done with a bit more development of Fiennes faith/doubt, but this was more realistic. Photocopying as a plot point never misses.

How the FUCK was Conclave not nominated for cinematography
― triste et cassé (gyac), Thursday, 23 January 2025 14:27 (one year ago)
Because it's less the cinematography, and more the art direction. (Reproducing the Vatican inner rooms, and dressing the cardinals in multiple subtle variations of red = major eye candy.)
So this was to some degree a mystery, and by the time the final plot twists unfolded I was amused to realize the late Pope was enough of a chessmaster to neutralize the two leading papal candidates in advance, and keep Lawrence in place to see that they were neutralized.

Lithgow has just been announced to play Dumbledore in the TV remake of Harry Potter. All indications are that this will be a general shitshow, but the character does require a certain darkness. (To be distinguished from prissiness or twittiness.)
