I HATE APPLE

Anybody here, or more likely anybody here's kid or geezer, like iPad 10th generation? If so, is the Folio ok for say up to 1000-word docs? My fingers aren't big, but wonder how they might do on there for non-distracting, extending typing sessions.

Still on Windows 7, but need to speed up---wondering how long this v. affordable model might more or less keep up w Internet, esp. streaming.

time to retire the 2012 Macbook Air finally.... getting a framework, looks very similar and the RAM and disk aren't soldered in! Apple only gotten worse with that kinda thing, sounds like.

You can't configure iPads with more or less RAM - the amount is tied to the model and sometimes the storage capacity. Looking at this list https://9to5mac.com/ipad-ram-list-2/ it seems the iPad 10 is one of the very last available with only 4GB. I'd imagine that already excludes it from some features in current iPadOS, as well as the speed penalty mentioned.

Whether or not you want to use Apple intelligence I would not get a new iPad unless it supports it. Apple and app developers are going to assume that hardware baseline pretty soon

I recently upgraded my iPad from a used A13 pro 11 to a used M1 Pro 11 - should be good for a while I think and the setup with the smart keyboard/trackpad is very usable when dragging the laptop around is too painful

those little snap-on wire connectors seem to be ubiquitous with new hard-wired electronics and I appreciate that, but I swear to god I was up and down the ladder for about 45 minutes and only through a small miracle was able to find the essential, single black screw used to connect the final pieces together after dropping it to the side in a pile of dirt and leaves

I’ve been doing home kit (and thread/matter stuff recently). Most useful thing so far has been a Meross garage door opener. Originally got it after forgetting my keys and getting soaked on the bike looking for them, but the most useful thing has been knowing the damn garage door is closed. It’s saved me hours in turning round at the end of the street to check I actually closed it.

Have also been picking up some thread temp/humidity sensors from alibaba and this great Japanese AC control doodad called a nature remo. It’s a little IR control box and it was working in home kit in about 2 minutes from opening the box. Our AC is a Japanese brand which maybe helped but there was no programming required. I was seriously impressed, the UX on every other one of these IR things has been atrocious. I’m now trying to work out how to import them because they are also cheap enough for a utility company to give away for a demand management programme.

Why is finder search such garbage?
Let’s say I navigate to a folder with 100 files. I put my cursor in the search bar on the upper right and start typing the filename I’m looking for. The window immediately goes blank…

Not only that but it defaults to searching "On This Mac". Guy if I wanted to search On This Mac I would have used Spotlight you absolute cockfarmer

Finder > Preferences > Advanced. Set "When performing a search:" to "Search the Current Folder".

my wife has an old iphone that holds pictures from my son's first 6 months that were never uploaded to the cloud and now the phone is completely locked. we looked into getting the photos off through someone referred through apple and it was like 1k to "possibly" get them all off. anyone know of a cheaper way of getting those back?

mother ended up with an ipad. which is kind of sensible in that she only ever used the aging laptop for email, Facebook and casual games. but we are not an apple family so we are struggling.

wanted to add a simple clock widget that would show UK and NZ times for when she skypes with cousin, but the app store is only showing things already installed, not like in the YouTube video i watched. i looked at account settings and it has flagged two of the accounts as using compromised passwords so figured we'd change those. cue 20 minutes of trying to change password, trying to get the touch id recognised (the case obscures the button!) and finally got to the end only to be told to change the same / a different password somewhere else. did it change, is it the same still, who knows?

The widgets you drag in from the left of the screen can include multiple clocks, each set to the time zone of whichever city you choose - they also go light and dark to show day and night at that location

we don't see clock widgets. searching for apps only returns the apps already installed.

When you say searching for apps are you actually in the App Store app? If so I'm baffled as to why it's only showing you apps you already have installed - usually it's trim by to sell you all sort of shit

yeah, it looks nothing like the YouTube video that i watched. i think widgets are different from apps but neither search returns anything external.

the 'complete your setup' nag screen is complaining about lack of apple pay. but there are things my cousin installed on there (candy crush) so installing things has worked in the past.

Sounds weird. Maybe parental controls are on or something. Are you prepared do to reset iPad and start afresh?

"Apple ID" is now "Apple Account", that much i know.

and yes, signed in. it's giving me the option to sign out, that's how i know.

i'll try signing out and in again, see if that helps. the pain though is that touch id is set up so i need their finger every once in a while.

Add your finger. I think you can have up to 10.

(Not a joke about how many fingers a person can have, you can have multiple fingerprints for Touch ID)

that said, we've just tried 3 random world clocks and they are all shit in their own way. '24 hour clock' setting just makes the font bigger. digits are truncated in widget view. full screen video ads, for google chrome randomly. 'in app purchases' that actually means "3 day trial, then a recurring payment". the one we ended up with does exactly what we want in lock-screen view ("live mode?" did it call it) and at least isn't in the way all the rest of the time.

(my finger is going to be 100 miles away 51 weeks of any given year)

The built in clock app has widgets that allow you to show the time in any city. Did you try that?

i don't even SEE that. i've searched for ipad clock and ipad world clock on the internet and it's right there, but i've never seen it.

I need resolution here - so the iPad does have the default Clock app? and you do see the World Clock within the default Clock app or no?
