can anyone recommend a newsreader?

does netnewswire work yet?

NewsGator dumped support for their public/non-corporate RSS service and told everyone to go to Google Reader. NetNewsWire Mac 3.2 beta works with Google right now, but NNW iPhone 2.0 (for Google Reader support) hasn't been released yet. According to the developer (and it's just one guy who's developing both of these) NNW iPhone 2 won't be ready for awhile - probably after NNW Mac 3.2 is done.

Bottom line, use the mobile version of Google Reader (which works surprisingly well)

Definitely Byline, which wold with Google Reader and the new Mac NNW

Does Byline still have the hard limit of 200 feeds?

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i've always found it to be fine. wondering what makes Byline worth paying for (totally willing to pay if Byline is demonstrably better) xp

jergins, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:38 (sixteen years ago)

Byline is great and totally worth it. I've bought it real early on when it was buggy as hell, but they've finally got a solid product going.

Not sure about the 200 feeds thing. I only have 114 subscriptions and regularly prune my feeds, so I haven't encountered that.

Twitterific Premium updated today.

I didn't know about that -- there used to be a limit of 200 items it would load at any one time, but I think he removed that.

stet, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

Jergins: the offline caching is totally worth it for me. It even stores copies of the linked pages for starred items. Used it a lot on holiday -- fill up on wifi, then read on plane.

stet, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:54 (sixteen years ago)

ahhh, yayaya ya ya offline. wow. that's brilliant. i'm staring a 14 hour flight in the face and that would help. buying now

jergins, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

also sorry gbx :(

jergins, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:57 (sixteen years ago)

so pissed right now

ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

like maybe i can swing replacing the thing at $199, but there's no way i can hack $500

ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

Nightmare. I would have thought it would have been alright in the pocket, too. Took mine skiing and it was OK, but I should probably be less cavalier with them: my last one developed a big bust LCD line across it.

Don't suppose you have house insurance you could claim on?

you mean mobile web?

'steen suicide (don't drive it) (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 August 2009 01:55 (sixteen years ago)

I've only had an iPhone for a few days, but the Rickroll app has been decent fun, and it's free!

gbx - if you're comfortable with pushing the limits of consumer ethics just bring it into the Apple store and tell em that you dunno what happened and now it won't turn on, if they check the dot, tell em that you left it in the bathroom while showering once or twice but it worked fine afterwards?

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Thursday, 20 August 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, i've got homeowner's but the deductible is too high for it to be worth it

dyao---the excuse i had planned on using was sort of a mashup of two legit problems: the phone dying, and the big pool of water i found on my counter as a result of seepage/roof leak during the storm (we had a tornado here today, the weather was horrendous). thing is, i highly doubt they'd really give a shit, is the thing. water damage is water damage, full stop.

ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Thursday, 20 August 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

eh I'd just plead ignorance and wave my hands and demand service. works better if you have a friend who is female and cute and have her be like "I dunno what happened! it just stopped working!" while making dog eyes...preferably in the manner of Fred Willard. Apple is pretty lenient with their customer service, at least judging from the murder people get away with on Mac forums.

gbx, just seeing this now so maybe it's too late but in general if you get consumer electronics wet, your best choice is remove the battery if you can (in this case obv not possible) and then submerge it completely in a jar of white rice, to pull the moisture out of the gadget and into the rice. You may still want to try it for a day before giving up all hope. You never know.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

^woah

sorry to hear gbx

Super Cub, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

BTW in case it wasn't obvious, that should be UNCOOKED white rice.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

wonder if the rice trick would work at this point? or earlier, at least?

and yeah, i know the battery trick, but damn you apple

ovum if you got 'em (gbx), Thursday, 20 August 2009 03:16 (sixteen years ago)

you mean mobile web?

Whatever it Google calls it when you load up iGoogle in iPhone Safari and then go to Reader

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

does it work with fried rice?

'steen suicide (don't drive it) (s1ocki), Thursday, 20 August 2009 04:31 (sixteen years ago)

pork fried rice ON IPHONE

cutty, Friday, 21 August 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

So they let Spotify on. Guess Rhapsody will be next. I wonder how big a cache the record labels will allow it to have - enough for a 45 min journey on the Tube out of mobile reception?

Alba, Thursday, 27 August 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

anyone been using Navigon?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 24 September 2009 07:52 (sixteen years ago)

What's NNW?

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 08:34 (sixteen years ago)

Net News Wire, I'm guessing.

Jouster, Thursday, 24 September 2009 09:07 (sixteen years ago)

Has anyone found a good web page cacher for offline reading? I've tried Byline but it doesn't seem to actually cache the actual web pages, unless I'm missing something.

Anybody try Instapaper?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 24 September 2009 09:29 (sixteen years ago)

instapaper is very good, just wish it would grab PDFs too

AJD, Thursday, 24 September 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

I have never used it, but instapaper is the one i've heard recommended most often.

caek, Thursday, 24 September 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

no one really mentioned this:

MMS update out today from AT&T

cutty, Friday, 25 September 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

Seeing how I have a MASSIVE cellphone bill, I'll think I'll skip that. And I do mean MASSIVE. I am calling on monday to "negotiate"'. Urgh

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 25 September 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)

my bill has stayed the same every month since I got it. i mostly use it for checking email and surfing, though. :-/

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Friday, 25 September 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I stupidly git myself a lame ass plan which covered... maybe five connections. As a result I have to pay so much... Could have bought food for a small country for a year. But apparently you can "negotiate" (they wave the invoice if you get on a more expensive plan). SIGH.

MMS update out today from AT&T

Just got the little text about it.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 25 September 2009 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

i have a question: so I had some apps I bought, but had to wipe and restore my phone. I couldn't restore my phone from the backup or it was still fucked, had to start anew. Is there any way to get the apps I bought back without paying for them again?

akm, Saturday, 26 September 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)

I believe Apple will let you re-download apps you've already paid for at no charge. If you try d/l'ing one, it should prompt you that you've already downloaded and ask you to confirm, but you shouldn't be charged.

a wicked 60s beat poop combo (Pancakes Hackman), Saturday, 26 September 2009 13:51 (sixteen years ago)

it didn't, and it charged me, which is lame

akm, Saturday, 26 September 2009 14:29 (sixteen years ago)

that doesn't make sense

cutty, Saturday, 26 September 2009 14:32 (sixteen years ago)

yeah I know? I can't even figure out where to ask this question of itunes/appstore

akm, Saturday, 26 September 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

(FWIW: I had to wipe my phone because visual voicemail crapped out completely. restoring it to factory state got that back. but resynching as the 'same' phone on my computer put back whatever software settings fucked it up in the first place and it stopped working again, so I had to go back to the factory state, then reimport all my contacts)
