For the past few months — for most of 2024, honestly — I've been mulling over giving up writing about music other than maybe keeping my newsletter going. I just don't enjoy it anymore, I feel like I've said everything I have to say, I've written about the same records a half dozen times or more, all my references feel stale to me, I'm just sticking with it out of fear of stopping. But I don't know, maybe if I just stop reading truly hideous mainstream journalism — the NY Times, the New Yorker, the fucking Atlantic, NY Magazine, the New Republic, all the shit I let dribble into my eyes this whole campaign — I'll snap out of it in a month or so and be back on my feet by my birthday and ready to plot my escape from the burning pirate ship.

The endless re-re-re-assessment of Arcade Fire and the Strokes

B-b-b-but there is an entire generation of music writers who haven't gotten to write their thinkpieces about Neon Bible yet, you would ruin that for them?

If you had read The Nation you might've seen pieces detailing the faults of the Democrat campaign. Maybe get a subs to that.

I remember seeing that posted and then clicking on the uspol thread & seeing breathless fanboy liveblogging of the event and it was so grotesque and depressing to me

Good on you to post this now wins.

I couldn't even look at the thread then.

The hippest kids are now pitching their pieces on the 60th anniversary of The Beach Boys Christmas Album.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 7 November 2024 18:22 (one year ago)

Wins, I don't know who that is

breathless fanboy liveblogging of the event

I truly can't remember what I posted at the time, but I'm not going to apologize for finding fun and inspiration from an event held by the political party in my country that aligns closest with my values. While I believe it was unconscionable that the DNC refused to let a Palestinian speak, I still enjoyed and connected with some of the other speeches, and the roll call is always a good time. And in general, even though I don't endorse everything that the party does, I won't deny myself the positive feelings that events like that can engender.

It combines my aesthetic snobbery, aversion to waste, and education in Marxism and Fire codes.

I love you. Unironically I think you are so great.

why does everyone put up with people like this

z_tbd, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:08 (one year ago)

quit the fucking board unperson

ivy., Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:09 (one year ago)

i don't understand being wrong over and over and over and then maintaining this aggressive know-it-all stance. goddamn learn some humility, just stfu and listen for 3 to 5 election cycles, you demonstrably have no idea what you're talking about. it's not like i do, either, but i also don't ridicule and belittle anyone who disagrees with me. if nothing else, learn how to wrong. you have been wrong. don't be like every single other know-it-all fucker who doubles down and makes even bigger predictions about the future with 100%/0% dogmatic guts-based bullshit - be that one, the ONLY ONE, maybe, in the universe who is wrong and then just SHUTS THE FUCK UP

z_tbd, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:14 (one year ago)

everyone, not anyone. i certainly do ridicule people who disagree with me occasion, but only after being frustrated with them like 1 trillion fucking times in my head

z_tbd, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:16 (one year ago)

Basically I am as NA as she is, and I would not claim that, especially as someone who is otherwise white. I liked her economic takes a lot.

sarahell, Saturday, 9 November 2024 00:42 (one year ago)

I said on Wednesday that I had been completely wrong about everything leading up to this election. I don't know what else you shitbags want, but you're not gonna fuckin' get it. So keep my name out of your fuckin' mouths, all of you.

whatever happened to the “dirtbag left” or whatever

brimstead, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:07 (one year ago)

Last i checked unperson wasn’t in a leadership role in the Democratic Party campaign so maybe think through what you’re really angry about? Lots of posters were going on for paragraphs with wrong predictions and assumptions

sarahell, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:08 (one year ago)

If you are legit that pissed at him … then ok … I am coming from a rough couple years of IRL conflicts that got petty and nasty and were really harmful among people who were all “left of St. Bernie” and it is demoralizing to see this here

sarahell, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:17 (one year ago)

It’s more the nonstop “everyone is stupid except me” tone of the posts, I don’t begrudge anyone being wrong.

JoeStork, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:19 (one year ago)

make that a bannable offence so

he wont be heading off alone anyway

Does the internet survive?

H.P, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:21 (one year ago)

not in current form but thats to be welcomed probably

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:23 (one year ago)

government mandated "vibe-checks" before every post

H.P, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:24 (one year ago)

I can't imagine even following the politics threads, every time you look away there's like 100 new posts

there are so many enemies out there. unperson is not the enemy. we mostly agree with him. he is dogmatic and disparages some of our opinions, so what

Dan S, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:35 (one year ago)

I have a lot more time for unperson than for the troll who managed to get a rise out of him, someone who seems to have spent a lifetime* developing that particular set of skills.

*an internet lifetime at least

WmC, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:35 (one year ago)

20+ years mate, if only I could monetise it.

xyzzzz__, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:41 (one year ago)

He at least lives in the US as opposed to that Fred guy who was unbearable

sarahell, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:44 (one year ago)

Go fuck yourself with something sharp.

With the exception of ivy & z_tbd I didn’t notice anyone commenting on what a fucked up thing this is to say.

“We” do not mostly agree with unperson, and responding that way is unnecessary.

gyac, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:50 (one year ago)

Some posters couch their hostility in a self-righteous sang-froid.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 9 November 2024 01:54 (one year ago)

and Sang Freud might just like Mott the Hoople a little TOO much.
