I wish Apple Intelligence was more obvious. Should I assume that there is a learning curve involved for the LLM? I'm not noticing much of an impact. AT ALL.

I. J. Miggs (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 31 October 2024 21:03 (one year ago)

What did you expect?
It’s a bunch of hot air

calstars, Thursday, 31 October 2024 22:07 (one year ago)

It's even more underwhelming than I thought it would be.

I feel like they didn't even get the low hanging fruit that an LLM easily does.

You can easily create a downloadable iCal file with natural language and you can't get anything close to the same results in Calendar, for example.

I. J. Miggs (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 31 October 2024 23:03 (one year ago)

I needed to reply to an email message from my local Apple store about a repair.

It’s a noreply, but it has a local number to call the store. FINE, I hate phoning but I psyched myself up to call it.

It goes through to an AI voicemail and after 5 minutes back and forth while it attempts to work out what I want, and finally puts me though to a call-center somewhere.

After describing my situation, they say they need to call my local store…

…15 minutes of hold music…

…phone without warning switches to a calling tone…

Phone goes dead.

Try to look online to send a message. No way to chat online with anyone about it

sounds like the system's working as intended

You may be right there, haha.

macintosh was concieved and designed to be the elegant, simplistic solution to computing - with priority on UX/UI. it's starting to get crummy. my mac seems to be constantly interrupting me now. pointless features are obfuscated within confusing menus. my phone has taken to reading out text messages in a robot voice over my music and this can only be disabled for 24 hours at a time (?!) what a shitshow. i run a 2005 powerbook G4 for some legacy music software, and computing on OS X Tiger is just... it just works. there's no bloat. it just does what you tell it. notifications, captchas, 2FA, subscriptions, emails just to say 'yep that was me who logged in', constantly having to re-connect bluetooth devices... it makes using the computer just feel like hard work. when the app store is filled with paid programs that are designed to make all these headaches easier, that's a real indication that systems are inherently poor. despite being quite minimal in my digital life, and only having a select few programs installed and running, i still find myself stressed to bits with things pinging off and going on the wonk every five minutes. :/

maelin, Thursday, 7 November 2024 01:44 (one year ago)

apple hasn't been the "it just works" company for a pretty long time now imo

I started having horrible Magic Mouse lagginess when I changed from my 2012 iMac to my new Mini...turned out to be proximity related. When I moved the mouse closer to the Mini, the problem would go away. Not sure whether the newer antenna is not as good, or the Mini enclosure is a stronger shield, but I had to disassemble all my crap so I could move the Mini closer to the mouse's usual position on my desk.

As bad as Apple has gotten on it just works, incredible how Windows is still so much worse.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 7 November 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

am i right that when playing an mp3 on apple music in my phone, it doesn’t let me see the extended metadata eg lyrics (where i always put the tracklisting for mixes)????

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 November 2024 19:33 (one year ago)

every iteration of MacOS introduces an annoying new feature that I have to google how to disable - I don't want the window to expand to full screen when I drag it off to the side, I'm dragging it off to the side so I can see the screen behind it at the same time

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 17 November 2024 21:24 (one year ago)

“Focus” ie disable your notification regime temporarily

Anybody here, or more likely anybody here's kid or geezer, like iPad 10th generation? If so, is the Folio ok for say up to 1000-word docs? My fingers aren't big, but wonder how they might do on there for non-distracting, extending typing sessions.

dow, Monday, 25 November 2024 23:41 (one year ago)

Still on Windows 7, but need to speed up---wondering how long this v. affordable model might more or less keep up w Internet, esp. streaming.

dow, Monday, 25 November 2024 23:44 (one year ago)

Fine for streaming

calstars, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 01:06 (one year ago)

Get the air if you can though, it has twice as much RAM as the cheaper one and will be speedy for years to come

calstars, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 01:08 (one year ago)

time to retire the 2012 Macbook Air finally.... getting a framework, looks very similar and the RAM and disk aren't soldered in! Apple only gotten worse with that kinda thing, sounds like.

Thanks--whichever I get will have all the RAM I can talk myself into, for sure---what about Folio keyboard, though: likely to get a bit cramped, even for my not-large fingers---?

dow, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 02:54 (one year ago)

You can't configure iPads with more or less RAM - the amount is tied to the model and sometimes the storage capacity. Looking at this list https://9to5mac.com/ipad-ram-list-2/ it seems the iPad 10 is one of the very last available with only 4GB. I'd imagine that already excludes it from some features in current iPadOS, as well as the speed penalty mentioned.

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 05:43 (one year ago)

Whether or not you want to use Apple intelligence I would not get a new iPad unless it supports it. Apple and app developers are going to assume that hardware baseline pretty soon

https://www.macrumors.com/guide/does-my-iphone-support-apple-intelligence/

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 12:18 (one year ago)

I kind of love that my iPhone 15 does not support that shit lol. Every other 15 does, of course.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 16:58 (one year ago)

lol literally my same thought

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 18:45 (one year ago)

only iPhone 15 Pros, right?
I don’t care, it runs just a little summarization on my device and comes up with the funniest bits

the summary of my app notifications just ended with “shoutout to Max Reed” lol

You can't configure iPads with more or less RAM
Right, so I'll prob get Ipad Air, with 8 to 10th Gen's 4 (why I quoted calstars above). Also watched a couple of vids comparing Magic Folio to Combo Touch : they prefer the latter for protection, though one guy says that his doesn't fit the 10th as well as the Folio, though thinks it might be because early production (in 2022). What about alternatives to Magic for iPad Air?

dow, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 21:28 (one year ago)

They skipped a default iPad release this year so the guess is next year they will come out with an 8 gb base model if you can wait. Air ain’t cheap at $600 base

calstars, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 21:41 (one year ago)

I'm going in on HomeKit. I'll let everyone know how it works out.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 21:51 (one year ago)

I recently upgraded my iPad from a used A13 pro 11 to a used M1 Pro 11 - should be good for a while I think and the setup with the smart keyboard/trackpad is very usable when dragging the laptop around is too painful

I installed an Eve Home outdoor light/camera to replace the busted-ass light above my back door. those little snap-on wire connectors seem to be ubiquitous with new hard-wired electronics and I appreciate that, but I swear to god I was up and down the ladder for about 45 minutes and only through a small miracle was able to find the essential, single black screw used to connect the final pieces together after dropping it to the side in a pile of dirt and leaves

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 26 November 2024 22:44 (one year ago)

I’ve been doing home kit (and thread/matter stuff recently). Most useful thing so far has been a Meross garage door opener. Originally got it after forgetting my keys and getting soaked on the bike looking for them, but the most useful thing has been knowing the damn garage door is closed. It’s saved me hours in turning round at the end of the street to check I actually closed it.

Have also been picking up some thread temp/humidity sensors from alibaba and this great Japanese AC control doodad called a nature remo. It’s a little IR control box and it was working in home kit in about 2 minutes from opening the box. Our AC is a Japanese brand which maybe helped but there was no programming required. I was seriously impressed, the UX on every other one of these IR things has been atrocious. I’m now trying to work out how to import them because they are also cheap enough for a utility company to give away for a demand management programme.

Yeah, I would wait, but want to get something before tariffs drive up prices of Chinese-made.

dow, Tuesday, 26 November 2024 23:22 (one year ago)

I know merchants are encouraging us to think that way, but who knows, might be among those Day 1 mandates he's promised.

Why is finder search such garbage?
Let’s say I navigate to a folder with 100 files. I put my cursor in the search bar on the upper right and start typing the filename I’m looking for. The window immediately goes blank…

calstars, Tuesday, 3 December 2024 23:39 (one year ago)

Not only that but it defaults to searching "On This Mac". Guy if I wanted to search On This Mac I would have used Spotlight you absolute cockfarmer

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 December 2024 23:47 (one year ago)

Finder > Preferences > Advanced. Set "When performing a search:" to "Search the Current Folder".

my wife has an old iphone that holds pictures from my son's first 6 months that were never uploaded to the cloud and now the phone is completely locked. we looked into getting the photos off through someone referred through apple and it was like 1k to "possibly" get them all off. anyone know of a cheaper way of getting those back?

Heez, Wednesday, 4 December 2024 00:37 (one year ago)

three weeks pass...

mother ended up with an ipad. which is kind of sensible in that she only ever used the aging laptop for email, Facebook and casual games. but we are not an apple family so we are struggling.

wanted to add a simple clock widget that would show UK and NZ times for when she skypes with cousin, but the app store is only showing things already installed, not like in the YouTube video i watched. i looked at account settings and it has flagged two of the accounts as using compromised passwords so figured we'd change those. cue 20 minutes of trying to change password, trying to get the touch id recognised (the case obscures the button!) and finally got to the end only to be told to change the same / a different password somewhere else. did it change, is it the same still, who knows?

koogs, Thursday, 26 December 2024 07:09 (one year ago)

clock > world clock?

encino morricone (majorairbro), Friday, 27 December 2024 08:50 (one year ago)

The widgets you drag in from the left of the screen can include multiple clocks, each set to the time zone of whichever city you choose - they also go light and dark to show day and night at that location

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 27 December 2024 09:36 (one year ago)

we don't see clock widgets. searching for apps only returns the apps already installed.
