The older I get the more I realise how much luck plays its part here too, but whatever the reasons I just hope everybody keeps on keeping on

"sententious bullshit" = not calling other people a fucking idiot.

On paper 80s King Crimson + Steely Dan should be a winner, but the results sound like a modern-day Jay Gatsby forming a prog band so nope.

tbh i'd prefer it if you kids could confine your "gentle right wing Dem" posts to the politics threads cos it's pretty fucking triggering to the rest of us in despair

I mean, unsurprisingly I don't agree, but I respect your point of view - but also I feel there's a lot of things where you are at the intersection of "I know a lot about X" and "fuck X"

They actually don’t get that much benefit because of the phase out for high incomes. It also includes property taxes… not just state and local income taxes

Book ChancemaN (Noodle Vague), Friday, 25 October 2024 06:10 (one year ago)

full respeck 4 io's right to be irritated by chintzy garbazio but counterpoint: a lot of people's lives are empty & miserable w/ no escape save death, so if buying a spooky inflatable minion gives them the semblance of a thrill then i think that is poignant in a grotesque kind of way

also i freakin' love flamboyant xmas lights

there was this big house in my old neighborhood that would put up 2 massive wreaths every december, wreaths the size of cars, wreaths as big as god's whole ass, they were at least as big around as one of the house's storeys, just tremendous! and i marveled whenever i passed the house, and it was nice, because december is the butt of the year and i low key loathe everything about it except the sparkly ott decorations. thank u big wreaths 💚🫡

twenteeth dentury (cat), Saturday, 26 October 2024 05:13 (one year ago)

thank you for saying something cat. i don’t even know what minions are— i am not a child and know nothing about the movies, though i know what they look like— but i just can’t be bothered to get annoyed at people who decorate for holidays.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Sunday, 27 October 2024 01:52 (one year ago)

I'm extremely pro holiday decorations in general, and lots of mine are perennial but i have def also noticed that spying decorations at Home Depot and Michael's is how a many people on the internet seem to anticipate and experience the holidays now. that's upsetting even if I don't think I know any of these people irl

someday I really want to go to one of those walkthrough Christmas light displays they have in some southern states that are not so elaborate, or one of those Christmas museums that are just like some insane person's house filled with antique Santa dolls.

I've been to the jack o lantern blaze in croton a couple of times, I guess that means I liked it enough to go back even though it's fucking far

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 27 October 2024 04:48 (one year ago)

you don't even have to know anything about the minions, table, there's nothing to know, they are a void of meaning and that's why people feel such kinship w/ the chody lil guys, there is just nothing actually there, a hypnotic semiotic lacuna

my main mouse, ayyyy! having just googled your pumpkin blaze: that is what the fuck i am talking about! all of the colors, all of the sparkle, my eyes hunger for such magnificent spectacle 😻

botanic gardens near me sometimes have lovely light displays in winter. one of my favorite memories is going to one of those on a frigid snowy night with a guy who'd lost his gloves and i had him warm his hands under my shirt, brrrrr. i haven't gone in ages; perhaps this year...

twenteeth dentury (cat), Sunday, 27 October 2024 09:49 (one year ago)

It combines my aesthetic snobbery, aversion to waste, and education in Marxism and Fire codes.

sarahell, Sunday, 27 October 2024 18:06 (one year ago)

Looking at photos, I'd say that Jack o' Lantern blaze looks both festive and a pretty spectacle, but it doesn't exactly tap into the sense of growing darkness and a nearing of death that was the origin of halloween. It used to be a very primal reaction to those realities of impending winter.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 27 October 2024 18:43 (one year ago)

"a void of meaning" is otm but something ain't right about a solo minion, their thing is multiplicity
they are antic but replaceable, the hollow gag their brief bloom before they're suddenly snuffed out by the next in a sequence of jokes
they are hard working though
one light up minion on the lawn is like a firework display with only one kaboom,
you need an army

there used to be a 360 walkthrough of this kinda sad xmas light display somewhere on the internet, it was so beautiful in its desolation but now I can't find it.

aimless, I think it actually does that in person! (the last display before the exit is actually a pumpkin graveyard)

It’s ok, surely people will care about Gaza now once Trump helps Bibi finish the job. Assuming there’s anything left to finish by January.

Oh yeah fuuuuuuck that guy and the rest of them doing that shit.

The rot re: the liberals in the US re: Israel/Gaza has been sickening.

Where i live, after a pro-Palestine demonstration got busted up by a contractor at a local festival, the festival terminated him and apologized, and immediately two supposedly people hijacked the thread to point out that this apology made them feel like Jewish people were no longer welcome at the festival.

The propaganda has gotten to where "babies and civilians being massacred is bad" somehow has an opposing side.

For the past few months — for most of 2024, honestly — I've been mulling over giving up writing about music other than maybe keeping my newsletter going. I just don't enjoy it anymore, I feel like I've said everything I have to say, I've written about the same records a half dozen times or more, all my references feel stale to me, I'm just sticking with it out of fear of stopping. But I don't know, maybe if I just stop reading truly hideous mainstream journalism — the NY Times, the New Yorker, the fucking Atlantic, NY Magazine, the New Republic, all the shit I let dribble into my eyes this whole campaign — I'll snap out of it in a month or so and be back on my feet by my birthday and ready to plot my escape from the burning pirate ship.

B-b-b-but there is an entire generation of music writers who haven't gotten to write their thinkpieces about Neon Bible yet, you would ruin that for them?

If you had read The Nation you might've seen pieces detailing the faults of the Democrat campaign. Maybe get a subs to that.

breathless fanboy liveblogging of the event

I truly can't remember what I posted at the time, but I'm not going to apologize for finding fun and inspiration from an event held by the political party in my country that aligns closest with my values. While I believe it was unconscionable that the DNC refused to let a Palestinian speak, I still enjoyed and connected with some of the other speeches, and the roll call is always a good time. And in general, even though I don't endorse everything that the party does, I won't deny myself the positive feelings that events like that can engender.
