fucking hell

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 10 October 2024 13:37 (one year ago)

The thread Ivy was referencing was Frogsb's birthday thread i think

H.P, Thursday, 10 October 2024 13:38 (one year ago)

lots of people in that thread with djing aspirations and insecurities, we try to be supportive there, so really a horrible thing to say imho

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 10 October 2024 13:39 (one year ago)

oh the same fucking tool who says you can't post about addiction management on a smoking thread. You are only permitted to post glib and self-satisfied shit about smoking cigarettes on a smoking thread. Well fuck you and your smallminded ideas of threadpolicing! (sorry just piling on cos I feel like it and am in the first of week of full nicotine withdrawal-grrr stupid fucking boring cunt!!)

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Thursday, 10 October 2024 13:57 (one year ago)

I'm sorry Ivy. I've noticed the same pattern from this specific poster and have considered calling them out, but was afraid I'd get piled on for it. Maybe I should have, didn't realize the extent they were making others uncomfortable since I wasn't in that DJing thread.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 October 2024 14:02 (one year ago)

what ivy said about extra obliviousness and egregiousness is otm. he's also been called out a lot on it, at least by me. he turns into mr. hyde when he's sober but never takes any responsibility for the jekyll posting. i'm not trying to pile on or anything, just communicate that it's been a clear pattern for a long time, years iirc.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 10 October 2024 14:08 (one year ago)

To be fair, this poster's fourth post, more than 21 years ago, was in This is the thread where you post drunk part 800000

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 10 October 2024 14:18 (one year ago)

Now the post itself is old enough to drink

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 10 October 2024 14:19 (one year ago)

To be fair, nobody cares.

gyac, Thursday, 10 October 2024 14:22 (one year ago)

sorry everyone for being kind of a dick about someone’s drunkposting

ivy., Thursday, 10 October 2024 15:31 (one year ago)

I don't think you are the one who has anything to apologize for, imo

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 October 2024 15:32 (one year ago)

Correct

gyac, Thursday, 10 October 2024 15:40 (one year ago)

Reminder that the FP system exists and that it has sometimes, not always, prompted posters to reconsider their poor behavior and posting habits.

October 10th 2024 is World Mental Health Day

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 10 October 2024 17:00 (one year ago)

ivy i don't think you did anything wrong

i don't... it's not something that affects me here, but i don't know how to handle that kinda things. i got friends who get drunk every night and it's not good for them. it sucks to watch. i don't say anything about it usually because someone who's got a problem just isn't gonna listen. sometimes people just behave in shitty ways and it's really fucking obvious that alcohol has a lot to do with that, and it's just... hard to not say the obvious sometimes.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 10 October 2024 19:07 (one year ago)

Not speaking for anyone but myself here, but I think it'd be more forgivable if it was an occasional lapse or something (we all know we've been there and had days where maybe we shouldn't be posting for whatever reason), but when it tips over to greater than 90% of said poster's posts being non-sequiturs and baseless insults, well, it's much harder to excuse.

To WmC's point, the FP is there, but in this specific case I question whether it would work since these posts are spread over such an array of threads that it's not like one specific post causing issue (though that DJ one is particularly egregious).

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 October 2024 19:27 (one year ago)

If the banhammer falls, I don't think the poster could possibly say "wait, wha'd I do?" And if he does, he'll get an answer.

All this energy to try and change the mind of one person who isn't ever going to change their mind.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 October 2024 14:12 (one year ago)

yeah

H.P, Monday, 14 October 2024 14:15 (one year ago)

honestly I like all of you which is why i stay here, we just happen to have a fundamental disagreement about politics, probably better if the “convincing “ period stops and the “acceptance” period begins

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 14 October 2024 15:05 (one year ago)

well, i like most of you.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Monday, 14 October 2024 15:06 (one year ago)

fwiw, that wasn't meant to disparage anyone at all. iow, yes, "acceptance" is where we need to be instead of rehashing the same thing over and over.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 October 2024 15:11 (one year ago)

So as not to derail that thread, I encountered this mentality (the denial/reflection) a lot as an adult but probably most memorable was when a book group I was in was reading this. (Genuinely great but horrific read, if you liked The Jakarta Method etc etc)

https://theguardian.com/books/2016/oct/06/the-history-of-thieves-by-ian-cobain-review

Anyway someone had just finished talking about one of the things they found shocking that they hadn’t known about (Pat Finucane being murdered in front of his children and the subsequent arson attack on a building that held evidence on the matter). The family has long pressed for an inquiry on the matter, because of well founded suspicion that the British government colluded in the matter.

Anyway, to me this has long been something I know about and most Irish people have some familiarity, but to these people it was unknown. Nothing is shocking about that; the persistence of imperialism and oppression depends a lot on ignorance. It’s very hard to advocate for your rights when you’re always having to explain that they were violated in the first place and that actually, it was violation.

None of that - the lack of knowledge - shocked me, because you can always learn new perspectives and historical narratives flow from the pen of the author. However, what did shocked me was a (heavily paraphrased) conversation with someone else in the group.

Them: but surely everyone was up to this?
Me: what do you mean?
Them: this kind of thing
Me: when you say everyone you mean…?
Them: other countries, governments
Me: …No, not generally countries being oppressed by other countries?
Them: but what about the IRA?
Me: they………are not the Irish government?!
Them: I don’t see what you mean
Me: this book is about things that the British government has done and covered up.
Them: right but it was more than the British government doing it.

And on and on it went. I found it a genuinely very bizarre perspective, and also the first time my reality came into very direct conflict with another person’s in such a fashion. It was as though we were speaking two different languages.

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2024 15:13 (one year ago)

There’s this scene in A French Village in the last season where one of the comrades who had been captured by the Vichy cops several years ago returns to reunite with his fellow Communists after the war when the Party is organizing youth. He had ended up in the Soviet Union, which the French Communists viewed as a worker’s paradise. They clamored for him to give a talk about it, this utopia. But he demurs. Then one of the other characters, I think she had started off as a Socialist and was not initially a Communist, goes up to this guy in private and asks him what’s up. And he emotionally tells her the truth about Stalinist oppression and how the Soviet Union is not the utopia they think it is….

sarahell, Monday, 14 October 2024 19:18 (one year ago)

my experience of aging is different

the strongest "wisdom" i've learned is how to not die

that's not just a matter of not taking chances

sometimes not dying means taking chances

for me the thing that's most likely to help me grow older is learning to go to the doctor

yes, that's taking fewer chances, but it doesn't mean i live in fear of death

quite the opposite. death is real and inevitable to me, life is ephemeral and bittersweet. i'm just trying to live and enjoy life the best i can, however long that winds up being.

fuckin... the thing that sucks about getting older is realizing that that shit kenny rogers said in "the gambler" is really fucking good advice

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 14 October 2024 19:49 (one year ago)

^^ As noted in this post from 21 years ago!

There's pretty much nothing that can be said that hasn't been said by Kenny Rogers and Bobby McFerrin.
Rule #1: Don't worry, be happy.
Rule #2: You gotta know when to fold em, know when to hold em. Know when to walk away, know when to run.

That covers everything I could possibly want to know about singlehood and relationships except the geopolitics of the wet spot, which I'm pretty sure Nick Cave had a few albums about.

Strangely enough, also the first thing that comes to mind whenever I read a really right wing JUST ASKING QUESTIONS comment by the poster in question

― scott seward

it is an accomplishment though!

when i was younger i had a friend who ran a record store up in wisconsin. good guy but, i mean. he drank. he dealt with his problems by drinking, and that killed him. i don't know how old he was. not very old. younger than you are now, i think. life is about more than surviving but if someone doesn't survive, they don't get to do more than survive either.

The older I get the more I realise how much luck plays its part here too, but whatever the reasons I just hope everybody keeps on keeping on

On paper 80s King Crimson + Steely Dan should be a winner, but the results sound like a modern-day Jay Gatsby forming a prog band so nope.

omar little, Friday, 18 October 2024 20:34 (one year ago)

tbh i'd prefer it if you kids could confine your "gentle right wing Dem" posts to the politics threads cos it's pretty fucking triggering to the rest of us in despair

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 14:51 (one year ago)

I mean, unsurprisingly I don't agree, but I respect your point of view - but also I feel there's a lot of things where you are at the intersection of "I know a lot about X" and "fuck X"

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 22:17 (one year ago)

Thank God someone was spared that.

They actually don’t get that much benefit because of the phase out for high incomes. It also includes property taxes… not just state and local income taxes
