About the popularity of cowboy names, Wattenberg says, “Parents are looking for names that connect with something specific to themselves — a heritage, an interest, a dream. For some, the rugged, independent cowboy image is the perfect fit.”

Not all of the names on this list belonged to “real” cowboys. As Wattenberg points out, "Wild Bill Hickok, Billy the Kid and Buffalo Bill were all just named William!"

Instead, parents are seeking names that "summon the spirit of the Old West," she explains. “That often leads parents to surnames and place names like Stetson, Colter, and Bridger. You’ll also see Western character names, like Dutton of Yellowstone, and country musician names like Gatlin, Brooks and Cash.”

jaymc, Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:15 (one year ago)

the popularity of jalen and its variants jaylen etc can be traced to the nba player jalen rose, his mom came up with it

While there was at least one Jalen born in the United States before Jan. 30, 1973, when Jeanne gave her son the name that was a combination of his father's (James) and his uncle's (Leonard), there's no doubt the popularity of the name can be tied directly to Rose's fame.

...

Rose was tasked with going through his mother's personal belongings after her death. Searching through one of her drawers, he discovered a handwritten list on a white sheet of paper. Jeanne Rose didn't just follow the career of her son Jalen; she followed every Jalen.

Harris is in Arizona right now talking about bringing down a meth cartel while she was AG in California. I was thinking that if Trump were giving the same speech, he'd veer off into talking about the late, great Tuco Salamanca.

clemenza, Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:22 (one year ago)

i feel like i really missed a moment when all the white people started giving their boys cosplay cowboy names??!

there were whole eras of this shit back when i had to know The Names of Minor Leaguers

mookieproof, Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:30 (one year ago)

'Festus' should be making a comeback soon

Andy the Grasshopper, Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:34 (one year ago)

talking about the late, great Tuco Salamanca.

"... didn't really know Hector. Not really a fan of his. I like guys who don't end up in wheelchairs..."

Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 28 September 2024 00:36 (one year ago)

But he could come close.

There are currently 28 judicial nominations waiting for votes on the Senate floor: 5 appeals court nominees and 23 district court nominees.

Whatever happens in Nov, I suspect the lame duck will be a judge-confirming bonanza.

Now waiting for the NYT/Siena numbers on 'likely voters who put the french fries on the sandwich'.

Jeff Wright, Sunday, 29 September 2024 19:29 (one year ago)

NY Times may also poll the folks who called in threats to Primanti Bros. restaurant for having Harris/Walz there but not Vance

curmudgeon, Sunday, 29 September 2024 22:02 (one year ago)

Although they did actually also have Vance, they just had to sort some things out first, but that didn't matter to the people phoning in their bomb threats

Judge Judy, executioner (stevie), Sunday, 29 September 2024 22:05 (one year ago)

Trump declared that Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) should be put in charge for “one really violent day.”
“One rough hour. And I mean real rough, the world will get it out and it will end immediately. End immediately. You know, it will end immediately,” he added without sharing any logistics.

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 30 September 2024 00:41 (one year ago)

Have we decided whether he’s a fascist yet?

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 30 September 2024 00:42 (one year ago)

I know he is nuts and doesn't think these things through well, but if two people had just made attempts on my life I wouldn't want to start making references to a violent hour when things end immediately.

Harris's episode of the "All the Smoke" podcast (which I have never listened to) will appear tomorrow (gift link). This photo, with the story, is excellent:

if he needs help with that, he could get enough volunteers it would break the internet

harris’s appearance on “all the smoke” is awesome if you like former basketball players with domestic violence records, which to be fair is lots of NBA fans, and true blue democratic voters

Trump calling for an actual Purge and it’s hardly even news worthy

(•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 30 September 2024 13:30 (one year ago)

sounds more like a pogrom or kristallnacht than the purge

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Monday, 30 September 2024 13:48 (one year ago)

Good times either way

(•̪●) (carne asada), Monday, 30 September 2024 14:07 (one year ago)

I'm glad the media is basically ignoring his Purge plan. It's about time they started to ignore him.

henry s, Monday, 30 September 2024 14:26 (one year ago)

No I need more policy details about this pogrom before I make up my mind.

A+

Whoever showed him The Purge, please do not show this man any more movies. Maybe Midsommar. We can show him that.

CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate

https://apnews.com/article/cbs-debate-vice-president-fact-check-7a3b31c98ab092dd44915df57a359d10

During ABC’s debate between presidential contenders Kamala Harris and Donald Trump earlier this month, network moderators on four occasions pointed out inaccurate statements by Trump, and none by Harris. That infuriated the former president and his supporters, who complained it was unfair.

Last spring, CNN moderators did not question any facts presented by Trump and President Joe Biden in the debate where Biden’s poor performance eventually led to him dropping out of the race.

On Friday, CBS said the onus will be on Vance and Walz to point out misstatements by the other, and that “the moderators will facilitate those opportunities” during rebuttal time. The network said its own misinformation unit, CBS News Confirmed, will provide real-time fact-checking during the debate on its live blog and on social media, and on the air during post-debate analysis.

z_tbd, Monday, 30 September 2024 15:07 (one year ago)

its own misinformation unit, CBS News Confirmed

it's hard to take a step back from "these times" and see things, but loooooooooool, the combo of this plus the utter futility of "facts" right now and how little they mean to anyone

z_tbd, Monday, 30 September 2024 15:08 (one year ago)

there's an alt universe out there where trump and his supporters were completely OWNED by philip bump's facts from 2016-present and they can barely even leave their houses because of all the times they were caught completely lying for their personal benefit

unfortunately that alt universe is like 49213238034 dimensions away from this one

z_tbd, Monday, 30 September 2024 15:09 (one year ago)

“the moderators will facilitate those opportunities”

love the corporate jargon, y'all

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:14 (one year ago)

CBS News says it will be up to Vance and Walz to fact-check each other in veep debate

if you can't be bothered to fact-check interviewees and hold them accountable for their lies you shouldn't be allowed to run a news business imo

Judge Judy, executioner (stevie), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:15 (one year ago)

yeah, but when they fact check Republicans people get mad at them. Did you ever think of that?

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:18 (one year ago)

it also means that vance can do the trump trick and just say that everything that walz says is wrong/untrue/a lie and nobody will be able to stop him during the debate.

scott seward, Monday, 30 September 2024 15:20 (one year ago)

He's gonna go hard at him for the "stolen valor" BS, try to put him on the defensive from the start I'm sure. Knowing he won't be fact-checked is total open invitation.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:22 (one year ago)

If it's up to the debaters themselves to fact check then Walz should totally bust out the couch-fucking thing.

henry s, Monday, 30 September 2024 15:44 (one year ago)

Feels like Walz has much more room to attack Vance than either Harris had to attack Trump (she's boxed in by how people can't handle women or POC going on the offensive) or Vance has to attack Walz (Vance is repellent and people really like Walz). I mean who knows but I can see Vance attacking Walz backfiring badly.

the absence of bikes (f. hazel), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:46 (one year ago)

he should print out a picture of a sofa, hold it up for the camera, and ask jd if he likes what he sees

hott ogo (voodoo chili), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:47 (one year ago)

he should paint lipstick and hair on that sofa.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 September 2024 15:50 (one year ago)

Like Walz is a coach, and in America that sort of personality is allowed to lecture you, dress you down, call you out... it makes people like them even more. Vance has a quisling vibe and I never see those kinda guys come out ahead in a public argument even when the facts are on their side.
