US Politics, September 2024 -- “I’m Not Going to Apologize For Posting a Joke”

Tentatively thinking there will be another debate: for Trump, to try making up for last night's debacle, for Harris, because he's Trump (and because, if it stays really close for another month, she probably needs another one more). I'm hoping--no facts here, just feelings--that this ends up being like 1980, where it's close for a long time, and then a feeling of "enough" shifts to Harris in the end. Obviously a 1980-type landslide is science-fiction now, so I guess I mean a feeling of "enough" in two or three key states (Pennsylvania obviously), enough to win.

I forgot her exact description of the people leaving his rallies was last night, but "exhaustion" was part of it. The "enough" of exhaustion, underscored by the debate(s), felt by just enough people in Pennsylvania.

It's like if you've never seen someone high on cocaine, the first cocaine user you meet will seem like an outgoing, magnetic individual with exceptional self-confidence and ambition. But we're a decade deep into the social media equivalent of the crack epidemic, and everyone has lost at least one friend or family member to this disease. We know what a sick person babbling nonsense to themself sounds like, y'know? The warning signs ain't that hard to recognize!

This is all just me doing armchair sociology, but I think the mentality inside Harris's camp is probably something similar

No one but economists and policy wonks thinks about inflation this way. They just know that groceries are a lot more expensive than they used to be. That doesn’t stop being true when the rate of inflation slows down.

Plus it’s not exactly a great argument anyway because it kind of sounds like “we somewhat mitigated the problem we created.”

The US is full of immigrants sending money home who care very much about the rest of the world. If you mean "the old white people in my head that I'm mad at," say that instead.

Now that prices of ordinary commodities have inflated they will not be coming down in any broad sense, only some price fluctuations in specific items. That's because monetary policy is 100% committed to killing any broad deflationary moves in the economy.

The way out of inflation for working people is to increase wages. Salaried workers will get their share of the bigger money supply that was injected into the economy during the pandemic much sooner than wage workers, unless the minimum wage is adjusted upward to $15/hr or more.

Congress could also sop up some of that extra money by raising taxes on corporations and the super rich, and the Trump Tax Cuts are due to expire very soon, so there's an opportunity to do so while retaining the more popular parts of that package. But will they?

Good gracious this oil market is just wild- at this pace the national average could fall below $3/gal before the end of the September...

i was watching part of the CNN town hall with their "undecided voter" panel and there were moments where you realize these people just want everything spoonfed to them like a baby and they have absolutely no interest in doing the research themselves. there was a pastor that said neither of them gave anything of detailed substance so he was just going to ask for god's guidance and i wanted to slam my head into the wall.

I think people take the job of undecided voter very seriously. It's like serving on a jury. You can't let information affect your decision.

You have to expect that anyone who is a genuinely undecided voter at this stage has the political awareness of a squirrel and to the extent they have political opinions at all they are bound to be a compound of shallow, confused, and half-formed nonsense.
