i thought she did as good as you possibly could against someone so obviously fucking demented. she kept her cool. she gave him a ton of shots. putin is going to eat his lunch? that was amazing. he landed nothing. it was all old man anger. flailing. it was beautiful to see. he was sweating. his nose was running.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 04:36 (one year ago)

just that beginning alone. coming over into his space and demanding a handshake? that is some dominant behavior. so cool. he was totally flustered by that.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 04:38 (one year ago)

the part where she was like "this...." clearly wanting to say "motherfucker" but instead saying "former president" was so goddamn good

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 04:42 (one year ago)

that was awesome. we laughed loudly at that.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 04:43 (one year ago)

I liked how much juice she put into "former president" over and over. Her most consistent message with that and "turn the page" was just, this guy is over. I thought the most cogent summary of her appeal was when she said, "I'm not Joe Biden. And I'm obviously not Donald Trump." That's pretty much what she was selling.

I can easily imagine voters under 40 watching Trump fulminating, bloviating, indulging in the most ott doomsaying, complaining, whining, namecalling and just blathering nonsense - and thinking...

xp with due respect aimless, if it's a simpsons reference, you may mean "over 40"

I swear she was about to say “fucking idiot” mostly because that’s what my mind put into that space

Silver’s stature thing doesn’t even make sense. She’s shorter, is this the one scenario where he’ll argue that being less physically imposing is beneficial?

If he went with “she doesn’t look like a dead person with 40 pounds of makeup on” okay maybe.

tomorrow we can do an extensive analysis of the relative value of Taylor Swift's endorsement vs Charli XCX calling Harris "BRAT"

Charli made her cool, Taylor makes her popular.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 05:17 (one year ago)

Something I keep coming back to is that when Trump was asked repeatedly if he'd veto a national abortion ban, his response is that Kamala Harris would never be able to pass it (?????). No, in this thought experiment YOU are the President. What about this isn't clear?

— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 11, 2024

I noticed this too, very strange

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 05:23 (one year ago)

I don't think that was quite what he was saying, but of course everything he says is garbled.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 05:27 (one year ago)

If she wants to win, Harris needs to train her face not to respond. It feeds into a female stereotype and, more importantly, risks offending undecided voters.

I disagree with this. For every undecided voter offended by Harris’ expressions I’m guessing you could find two saying “Yes! I make that face when Trump speaks too!”

Front-loaded albums are musical gerrymandering (Prefecture), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 05:32 (one year ago)

just to be clear, i think harris enduring with actual emotion through the maniacally hilarious onslaught of bullshit in the ways that she did was totally boss and how he should have been handled all along. her facial responses seemed natural and appropriate throughout.

she had her talking points and hammered on them. the moderation was handled the way a heated political debate should be, but only in this convoluted scenario can i simultaneously say that they were definitely giving harris more leniency on fact-checking her claims (but then again, her claims were... uhh, normal things that happened or are going to happen because trimp is shitheap).

i did like that she ended by saying how all these jokers do is scream and complain and accuse and then... over to you former president and he uses his last chance to talk to do exactly that! i'm voting for harris because she can see the future! or read minds! whatever.

final thought: all debates are good debates because either the guy you like will do or say something you like and/or the guy you don't like will do or say something really foolish and possibly get given the what-for in real time by the guy you do like (that's like the political debate alley oop when that happens, definitely the most fun play for spectators!).

Marco Rubio figured out how to bait Trump in 2016. It's shocking that Hillary Clinton and Biden never baited him.

A key point missing in a lot of post debate analysis is that Trump’s claim about immigrants eating pets almost perfectly syncs up to the piano in the Peanuts theme song. pic.twitter.com/6icWLe1sPN

It's incredible and scary that so many people can look at Trump and not see an unhinged moron.

They are willing to overlook the moron bit because he’s a racist.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 11:43 (one year ago)

And also the media here do an outstanding job sanewashing what he says (ie rewriting it so it makes syntactic sense and sounds reasonable).

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 11:45 (one year ago)

Most of the people voting for Trump are seeing him on a screen not reading his words translated by journalists

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 11:54 (one year ago)

Basically no one broadcasts his rallies at length anymore. It’s all second hand analysis.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 11:56 (one year ago)

The currency of sanewashing, putting a succinct label on the insidious work the press has been doing for Trump, is important I think. It won't end the practice, but having the concept out there and in the mind of journalists will have (some) effect on how his incoherent lunacy is reported.

bulb after bulb, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 12:04 (one year ago)

the most lmao thing is that the vast majority of people who watched the debate aren't really plugged into this like we are, Trump saying "they're coming to eat your dogs and cats" must sound totally insane to people who didn't know that was a story

It sounds insane to lots of people, sure. But there are still people who are like, "huh? I didn't hear about that; that's awful," and then they look and see that it's being reported on, so there must be something there.

Doubt this tbqh

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 12:46 (one year ago)

kamala did really good last night but running as not trump is always going to have limited appeal, when she pivoted to talking about what she was gonna do it was like small business loans help with down payments, typical small bore dem things, not anything thats gonna get anyone off the couch, full throated defense of fracking is just he most transparent political bs, repeating israeli war propaganda verbatim is pretty bad and not unlike trumps claims re eating pets, totally abandoning medicare for all, no mention of the minimum wage, vowing to solve the housing crisis is good but even theres doesnt seem to be a lot of passion or depth no feel for the injustice of the situation, the one big issue that shes really hitting is abortion which is great will have real positive impact on peoples lives if she wins and will help her win, but overall were getting another not trump campaign like clinton and biden, which is pretty dicy as far as winning and clearly doesnt have much ambition to change the conditions that helped foster trumpism

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 12:58 (one year ago)

Insightful post, thanks

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 13:00 (one year ago)

I don’t disagree but I think Trump lost a lot of his shine and his element of surprise and may have a ceiling in terms of true believers. I think this may be an election where, like 2020, “I’m normal and I’m not Trump” could be enough to win. Especially considering how poorly he’s coming off lately.

She definitely did not offer much in the way of policy and said a lot of tone deaf stuff like thinking anyone on the planet would be moved by a Dick Cheney endorsement or acting like Camp David was some hallowed ground. Her responses were vague and canned. I can’t really blame candidates for doing that because anything specific you say just gets spun against you.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 13:02 (one year ago)

People say they watch debates for policy but they watch'em like they do a football game: it's vibes and a good time and sticking it to the other side. But lag00n otm.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 13:04 (one year ago)

Yeah, it ain’t gonna go back to the Lincoln-Douglas days.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 11 September 2024 13:05 (one year ago)

i think calling this stuff policy isnt quite accurate its more showing what you stand for, the intersection of vibes and policy, saying the rent is too damn high will get people fired up, saying were going to solve the housing crisis will not

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2024 13:07 (one year ago)

Yes, hence why her abortion answer was the most human.
