Wow, that's the first Peter Baker byline worth a damn

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2024 21:03 (one year ago)

But his rambling, sometimes incoherent public statements have stirred concern among voters.

Dying @ this. "His threats to murder congress and dissolve the nation have raised eyebrows among some corners of the electorate."

That's what I'm saying. Imagine reading this in the voice of Frank Drebin.

Yeah, there's a bunch of loser incels who've turned 18 since November 2020.

While that is true, Trump's campaign also believes that gross sexism and unhinged misogyny is attractive to unreconstructed men of color: Gaetz says that for every Karen they lose, there’s a Julio and a Jamal ready to sign up.

Hits a quadfecta of cynical, insulting, crude, and cruel.

JD Vance pushing the cat-eating line. So NOW he cares about cats huh.

Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio.

Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country. Where is our border czar? pic.twitter.com/rf0EDIeI5i

As I see it, if Lincoln Project Republicans want to support Democratic candidates they are welcome to, as long as they don't expect concessions for their support. As for treating them with civility (shrug) that's OK with me. There's no reason for the Democrats go out of their way to either praise them or attack them as long as they are reasonably well-behaved. Just say 'thank you' and then ignore them.

"Reports now show"... Trump teaches his disciples well.

just imagining the chaos that could possibly ensue from this

RFK Jr. remains on the Michigan ballot, as he bailed too late for the things to get reprinted.

he's also suing NC to take him off the ballots, which have already been printed, delaying the process which I assume was his intent all along

I guess I need them to move along from Suck Up To Republicans Week pretty sharpish, it’s hurting momentum.

Harris “blew one big opportunity to tack to the center with her selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) rather than Josh Shapiro: that a tiny minority of progressives objected to Shapiro was an argument in Shapiro’s favor, if anything,” Silver wrote in a post on his website.

This is so stupid. I am amenable to the argument that she should've picked Shapiro because it would make it easier to win what will likely be the tipping-point state. But I can't imagine that the broad electorate -- most of whom had never heard of Shapiro or Walz before two months ago -- would perceive a meaningful ideological difference between them. Personally, I was hoping she'd choose Walz, but both of them are essentially mainstream Democrats who would be attacked as frothing communists no matter what.

jaymc, Monday, 9 September 2024 21:23 (one year ago)

I’m still back on “vote YES on Jill Stein”

laughter is the best weapon (DJP), Monday, 9 September 2024 21:32 (one year ago)

"tack to the center" he is such a hack

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2024 21:35 (one year ago)

People who are very online all the time (and I am not saying I'm not one of those people) have a bad habit of thinking that Shapiro is "centrist" and Walz is "left" based on what anti-Zionists on Twitter say. But normal people are not aware of anti-Zionist Twitter! To most voters, Shapiro is an east coast Jew and Walz is a Midwestern everyman. The former is left, the latter is centrist.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 9 September 2024 21:57 (one year ago)

Hmmm you don't have to pay any attention to twitter to see the American right trying to co-opt jewishness in 2024 tho. Demogralhic stereotypes are in flux.

stepping away from the precipice momentarily:

.@MorningConsult just dropped a huge amount of polling. Let's go through it.

National: Harris 49/46

VA: Harris 52/42
MN: Harris 51/44
WI: Harris 49/46
PA: Harris 49/46
MI: Harris 49/46
GA: 48/48
NV: 48/48
NC: 48/48
AZ: Trump 49/47
FL: Trump 49/47
TX: Trump 52/43

— Taniel (@Taniel) September 9, 2024

We got 3 polls of North Carolina today, all conducted after Labor Day.

Harris leads 49% to 46% in two of them (Survey USA & Quinnipiac). In the third (FAU), Trump is up 48/47.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2024 22:05 (one year ago)

would perceive a meaningful ideological difference between them

this is probably true but Walz is the duck hunter/fisherman guy, there would be no mossy oak campaign hat with Shapiro on the bill

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 9 September 2024 22:05 (one year ago)

Arizona and Florida polling the same seems odd

frogbs, Monday, 9 September 2024 22:09 (one year ago)

We've gotten Florida polling that has made Trump nervous.

That said, Florida officially has a million more registered GOP than Dems for the first time in its history.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2024 22:12 (one year ago)

trump polling too bad in florida seems like pretty decent evidence of polling bias

who are these people?? She's the fucking vice president! what do you need to know?

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 9 September 2024 23:49 (one year ago)

how far she can go on Hot Ones, y'know, important stuff like that

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Monday, 9 September 2024 23:51 (one year ago)

xp Apparently a lot of people. We live in such a stupid country, but even a lot of the smart people I know have never paid an iota of attention to her and what she's accomplished, until now

Dan S, Monday, 9 September 2024 23:53 (one year ago)

yeah, I guess living in the Bay Area - we knew her all along, since the 90s

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:01 (one year ago)

I'm not going to watch the debate tomorrow. Trump is hard to debate because he doesn't debate, he never answers any questions, he just uses his time to dominate, deflect, denigrate and lie lie lie. I'm hoping she has a strategy for countering that, but I don't want the stress of being an observer

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:06 (one year ago)

I have no plans to watch it either.. I'll just wait for the highlights. There's nothing to be gleaned from this

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:13 (one year ago)

I'm going to watch the Emmys on Sunday, though

Dan S, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:24 (one year ago)

It’s rigged.

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:30 (one year ago)

I won't be watching either. I already know which of the two of them I'll be voting for.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:35 (one year ago)

I will be watching Marc Ribot and Shahzad Ismaily do something or other. Not debate, probably.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 00:49 (one year ago)

I knew the Biden debate would be too painful to watch, but I might watch this one. I wouldn't mind seeing Kamala Harris wreck him. Of course, she may also fail and plunge me into a dark depression.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:01 (one year ago)

I think she'll be fine, I don't know about putting any dents in him though. He'll just say all the same shit he always does.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:10 (one year ago)

call me optimistic, but I think we are are long overdue for a "have you no decency, sir" moment

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:11 (one year ago)

like, a withering putdown (or five) that are even better than "will you shut up, man?"

go polish your nose ring (sleeve), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:12 (one year ago)

I'd say she and her advisors know that whatever happens tomorrow evening it won't be a debate, but an opportunity to see what a Harris presidency might look and feel like, to gauge her ability to speak to the listeners and to demonstrate her overall capabilities.

I'll guess the most difficult questions for her will be those that require her to embrace Biden's performance in office or distance herself from him, especially in regard to Gaza, because either approach has political drawbacks - and if she tries to finesse it, it will sound weak and evasive. The 'moderator(s?)' will understand this and therefore see it as their job to make her squirm and see what happens.

It's a weird tradition to hold these performances, but very little about US elections is direct or sensible, or even about governance.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:24 (one year ago)

Having the mics off cuts down on the chances of Trump letting out an <audible> N-word.

Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:30 (one year ago)

It would be amazing if she answered every question with legit policy specifics in an optimistic way, but ended each answer with a statement that makes Donny Dipshit mad to where he spends his entire time meandering like a moron in hopes to defend himself, never getting to a single policy or attack
(HARRIS: "...that's why we support labor unions, and it's weird that Trump says I cannot be two things at the same time, because he's proved that one can be a convict and a rapist!"
MODERATOR: "VP Harris, you're time is up - Former President Trump, want to respond?")

Front-loaded albums are musical gerrymandering (Prefecture), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:36 (one year ago)

I'm sure she has some rhetorical strategies planned. Honestly, beating Trump in a debate is kinda low stakes. He's a lunatic and people hate him.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 10 September 2024 01:53 (one year ago)

I have always watched presidential debates, but I'm not sure I can do it. Biden freaked me out too much. Obviously, I don't think she will be that bad, but I also don't think it will be a fun watch.

jaymc, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 02:05 (one year ago)

I will watch with some anxiety--my bowling league starts tomorrow, so I'll have to PVR and catch up. I don't think I'll read anything first, just watch.

clemenza, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 02:09 (one year ago)

Ya it’s gonna suck, I might watch for a bit just to see what the tone is

frogbs, Tuesday, 10 September 2024 02:09 (one year ago)

imo the strategy is to throw a lot of little digs in there that Trump will feel compelled to respond to, there's actually been some attention paid to the fact that Trump can't answer a simple question, keeping him as distracted and pissy as possible might help

on the other hand I do think people are starting to wonder what Kamala's actual platform is, I think it might be good to outline some specific things for once.
