the stories circulating about Aurora CO are maddening, I can't tell if it it's willful disinformation or what; as of a week ago it looked like legit news orgs were reporting stuff about videos with people with guns in the building. Now the people who live there say nothing of the sort happened. Was it somewhere in between? completely false? this shit is going to get worse and worse, and on a bigger scale, very soon; aided by AI, I can imagine film clips of really heinous, terrifying shit being widely disseminated with no good way to counter with the truth outside of eyewitness reports. I mean this stuff was already happening with the Syrian civil war a few years ago, no doubt it's happening with Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Gaza.

Does anybody think Harris has finished climbing in the polls?

I worry that she may have.

just yesterday I saw this video of some Walter White-lookin fuck talking about how his granddaughter had to be pulled out of preschool because she didn't speak Spanish and that the school was demanding they hire a full-time interpreter, it is so fucking stupid and yet it had like several million views. I guess once you've convinced people there are litter boxes in schools now because of wokeness you can pretty much just say anything

xxxxpost afaict with the Aurora, CO situation, there is a building owned by a slum-lord who refuses to get it up to code or fix anything. The tenants just stopped paying their rents, and the landlord went to the press with a BS story about how he can't enter his building because armed Venezuelan gangs are squatting inside. Of course this was swallowed whole by Fox News and the like.

Didn't know they had Penzey's in PA, as mentioned it's a Wisconsin company. There are a couple in town here and we go all the time, it's a delight. Their newsletter certainly goes hard, but also has crazy deals (often a free bottle of something if you spend any amount in store, or even without purchase).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 9 September 2024 18:53 (one year ago)

Penzey's got a bunch of negative Yelp reviews after Harris visited.

There’s a Monster in my Vance (President Keyes), Monday, 9 September 2024 19:00 (one year ago)

I think I thought Penzys was a PA company, as I'd only seen it in Pittsburgh.

Would be cool if Bill Penzey became the liberal Mike Pillow Guy.

My take is that Harris has had enough time to pick all the low-hanging fruit. Trump picked his long ago. From here forward it will be an all-out battle for the meager number of undecideds and more importantly to motivate their voters right up until they've voted. Tuesday's debate should barely move the needle, but then very little is likely to move the needle more than by small increments now.

Yeah. Harris cleaned up Biden's damage and probably a few more to her total in the form of likely voters; now let's see how independents break.

Good news: I'm seeing a lot more Harris/Walz lawn signs.

Bad news: They are visually indistinguishable from signs for randos running for school board or whatever

Weren’t independents leaving Trump for her?

Bad Bairns (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 9 September 2024 20:24 (one year ago)

A buddy and I were talking yesterday and we both agree that Tim Walz was a perfect choice, but it seems that we're WRONG:

Pollster Nate Silver says Vice President Harris missed a major chance to pick up voters in the center when she passed over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) as her running mate.

Harris “blew one big opportunity to tack to the center with her selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) rather than Josh Shapiro: that a tiny minority of progressives objected to Shapiro was an argument in Shapiro’s favor, if anything,” Silver wrote in a post on his website.

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 9 September 2024 20:29 (one year ago)

The election was a 50-50 chance 6 months ago, it was 50-50 when Harris became the candidate, and will likely be 50-50 on election day.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 9 September 2024 20:31 (one year ago)

some yeah, others probably went to Trump after the RFK endorsement

as I understand it the story of 2016 and 2020 is quite simple, independents/swing voters went 2:1 for Trump in '16, then 2:1 for Biden in 2020. most indications are that Trump is not exactly winning those folks back. I can buy that his base has expanded among very online young men though.

frogbs, Monday, 9 September 2024 20:34 (one year ago)

Beltway Dems are fucking this up by playing civility with Lincoln Project Republicans, when no actual voters are begging for any such collaboration or intervention.

As Debate Looms, Trump Is Now the One Facing Questions About Age and Capacity

With President Biden no longer in the race, former President Donald J. Trump would be the oldest person ever to serve in the Oval Office. But his rambling, sometimes incoherent public statements have stirred concern among voters.

scott seward, Monday, 9 September 2024 20:48 (one year ago)

be cool if harris repeated trump's line about biden: "i don't think he knows what he said". that would be funny.

scott seward, Monday, 9 September 2024 20:50 (one year ago)

xp yeah, just heard the editor from The Atlantic talking about the same thing on NPR - glad to see this is gathering mainstream attention

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 9 September 2024 20:50 (one year ago)

if Harris is smart (she is) she will wait until Trump starts complaining about how they replaced Biden/how long did she know he was mentally incompetent etc. and then take the opportunity to turn it around on him, how he is also old and incoherent but won't get out of the way because he is not a patriotic public servant etc.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2024 21:00 (one year ago)

it is too bad that this is too long for next month's thread title.

“It’s a very important issue. But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about that — because the child care is, child care, it’s, couldn’t, you know, there’s something, you have to have it. In this country, you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about, by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to, but they’ll get used to it very quickly — and it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us, but they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s going to take care.”

While that is true, Trump's campaign also believes that gross sexism and unhinged misogyny is attractive to unreconstructed men of color: Gaetz says that for every Karen they lose, there’s a Julio and a Jamal ready to sign up.

Hits a quadfecta of cynical, insulting, crude, and cruel.

JD Vance pushing the cat-eating line. So NOW he cares about cats huh.

Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio.

Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country. Where is our border czar? pic.twitter.com/rf0EDIeI5i

As I see it, if Lincoln Project Republicans want to support Democratic candidates they are welcome to, as long as they don't expect concessions for their support. As for treating them with civility (shrug) that's OK with me. There's no reason for the Democrats go out of their way to either praise them or attack them as long as they are reasonably well-behaved. Just say 'thank you' and then ignore them.
