Terrific! I mean, two months post-submission and I already cringe at parts of it--mostly grammatical and awkward-prose stuff--but my PhD supervisor wants to talk to me about turning it into a book!

only posting here because if I post here then people will say "see u next week dawg" and my endless desire to prove people wrong will be the whole thing to make me stick to a short respite.
I'd gotten significantly better mental health wise and then just had a week where I stumbled 30 feet backwards and all I feel like is that I've made myself a resource for other people to drain and I come here for sheer self-abasement purposes which makes me feel worse about myself. so I'll just read in silence for the next 30 days...cos y'all are still entertaining fucks.
bye for now but i'll be back

While my break was for completely different reasons, I get where you're coming from. Take care of yourself, N.

I learn from Wikipedia that actual real-life Neanderthals could create fire, build cave hearths, make adhesive birch bark tar, craft at least simple clothes similar to blankets and ponchos, weave, go seafaring through the Mediterranean, make use of medicinal plants, treat severe injuries, store food, and use various cooking techniques such as roasting, boiling, and smoking.
Which sounds like a pretty impressive holiday plan, although the article doesn't say if Neanderthals could do all of those things at the same time. Still, I like to imagine that Neanderthal is, right now, making adhesive birch bark tar, crafting a poncho, seafaring through the Mediterranean, making use of medicinal plants, and using various cooking techniques. Such as roasting, boiling, and smoking. I admire the use of the Oxford comma there. What the fuck is adhesive birch bark tar. Why would Neanderthals need glue?
Okay, waterproofing. That's a good reason. That's a good reason for inventing glue. I'll accept that. Repelling snails is another one. I'm not sure why you'd skip inventing ceramics and/or mining in favour of repelling snails, but what do I know about living in the untamed wilderness of prehistoric France? Was I there? No, I was not.
I also learn from Wikipedia that "Neanderthals are known to have collected a variety of unusual objects — such as crystals or fossils — without any real functional purpose or any indication of damage caused by use", so they weren't all that much unlike modern humans.

taking a break, my impulsive posting style has made me realize i can be a mean SOB and i don’t want to be a dick to a community of people i value a lot. will continue to read but refrain from posting for a few weeks as i evaluate how and why i post what i do.
apologies to those i have been a dick to

I obviously don't always agree with you table, but I value your thoughts and I know you're coming from a real place. (I don't mean Philly, tho it's pretty real.) I like that you try to keep us all honest. A little ad hominemy, sure, but we can all survive sharp elbows. Breaks can be good, but don't stay away long!
― Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 25 September 2024 13:22 (one year ago)
take care man. one of the things that's most impressive to me about you is your self-awareness and ability to reflect and modulate your response. something i've also struggled with and learned through difficulty over time. i have no doubt you'll be back a stronger, more thoughtful and more measured poster. impulsiveness isn't necessarily bad imo! fwiw one of the tendencies i pick up from you sometimes is a purity complex, like one thing needs to be absolute evil all the time. i imagine that has its place in some contexts but i'm not sure it's in a heterogeneous message board. this coming from me, who has to battle with having strong opinions and where they might bleed over into harsh judgment and ad hominem all the time. don't mean to come across as a scold and genuinely wish you well. you've been through a lot and you deserve it.
― he/him hoo-hah (map), Wednesday, 25 September 2024 13:50 (one year ago)
Much love Tables. Agreed, don’t stay away long!
― H.P, Wednesday, 25 September 2024 14:04 (one year ago)
<3 tabes. honestly, taking the time to be thoughtful about what you're putting into this community (and what you get out of it!) is really commendable. I've had bouts this year of both not liking the sound of my ilx voice + being frustrated with certain modes of ilx discussion or posting habits, so I get where you're coming from. I have always enjoyed ilx more after a break too

Hey table, good luck with the break. I know I'm not one of your favorite poster, but I do appreciate your fierce dedication to things you believe in, even if it leads to some abrasiveness. It's clear it comes from a good place and frustration with others for not facing issues with the deep sincerity you do, so even when I've had run-ins with you in the past I appreciate your insight. Don't stay away too long.

table - always impressed how you walk back and apologise pretty quickly whenever you feel you've gone overboard. Like to think that will be enough for stirmonster to come back too.
Personally don't think anyone changes much after some silence and reflection but it would be impressive if a new table comes back!
