I like the line about making choices "about heart and home"

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Thursday, 8 August 2024 21:18 (one year ago)

reclaiming family and country as talking points from the GOP is a big win. She's completely believable when she speaks too. She does not come across as disingenuous.

"get the government out of your life" became a GOP tentpole for the past 20 some years

I like it that she’s turned the right-wing call for government to get out of our lives back around on them. They’re only anti-regulation when it comes to lightbulbs, guns, and money.

Don't forget low-flo showerheads, Trump had a serious problem with those

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 8 August 2024 21:41 (one year ago)

Heard a bit of Trump’s presser today. Between boasting that he “gave everybody what they wanted, Democrats and Republicans” re: Roe v Wade and insisting that Harris is now the Dem candidate because she’s a woman and from a “special group,” my level of “fuck this guy” is at an all time high.

The transparently flimsy and misleading (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 8 August 2024 21:42 (one year ago)

solid hit from dril there, hope they listen

I've been trying to get Dems to do this for decades. "Hi, we're the Republicans and we think government should stay out of your life. Well except for deeply personal decisions regarding childbearing, enjoying some cannabis, or reading any book at a library that we don't like, for that and more we might throw you into prison"

Lee626, Thursday, 8 August 2024 22:10 (one year ago)

Completely deranged.

Turns out you just need a guy who reminds you of your nicest neighbor growing up to completely break the reactionary political sphere.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 8 August 2024 22:29 (one year ago)

Trump’s original bit was on the water efficient toilets, but he kept doing the “we’re having trouble flushing — not me, you. because they took away the good toilets” variation. Which gets the laughs, but it’s also funny that audiences were like “yeah I keep clogging my toilet!”

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Thursday, 8 August 2024 22:33 (one year ago)

Trump's campaign strategists are trying the usual conservative move of co-opting whatever progressive messaging is working. that 'twitchy tim' gambit is their feeble attempt to co-opt "weird", but it looks more like they're breaking into a flopsweat.

good reminder of how much of Trump's shtick is just "I'm better than all you swine", allows him to get away with shit that people like Vance or DeSantis or Cruz absolutely could not, take that away and you basically get like, Marjorie Taylor Greene. idk how they're gonna replace that once he's out of the picture

frogbs, Thursday, 8 August 2024 22:42 (one year ago)

I hope they jump on the 'tampon tim' thing which will strongly engender them to female voters everywhere

i'm having trouble articulating this but when biden dropped out of the race it was like a fever broke and people saw, for just a glimmer of a moment, that life was not some crushing inevitability, that everything was not just on rails and trundling towards yet another dispiriting conclusion. all the smart people said this sort of thing just wasn't done, it was unprecedented, and that's why it would never happen, and they were all wrong. (i was one of these people briefly.) they said the incumbency was so valuable that etc etc. - all the conventional wisdom - and none of it mattered, he dropped out anyway, and it's like we've shaken off a nightmare, and what's funny about it is that trump is part of that nightmare. the little window of insight that conventional wisdom isn't fate, that things can change, feels like absolute kryptonite to trump, who maybe at one time represented insurgency and change but who now feels like he's woven into same fabric that's just been cast aside

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 August 2024 23:07 (one year ago)

and maybe this is a reach but fox news too - it all feels like it's just been revealed to all be cardboard scenery and props

it's a nice moment for sure and fun to feel the energy and optimism, but i think maybe it's easy to overlook the continuum underneath it, the fact that fundamental conditions are basically the same, or that change happens glacially and not as the intended outcome of willful events. that being said i feel like there are a few real openings appearing but like it's too early to tell how far they go. not to get all galaxy brained or anything.

You’d think, given that he sounds like he packed a kilo of cocaine into his sinus cavities before the presser, that he’d have been able to muster just a little bit of energy there. Cripes. Although it sounds like he’s really into white males, so.

Reporter: Can you comment on some the criticisms he made today?

VP: I was too busy talking to voters. I didn’t hear them. pic.twitter.com/8iERvbFNN6

— Acyn (@Acyn) August 8, 2024

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER 1: Why do you think he pulled out of the debate with you?
HARRIS: I am beyond trying to speculate about how he thinks.

UR2: Can you comment on some of his other criticisms? He made a whole litany of them today... [DO YOU FUCKING SEE?]
HARRIS: I was too busy talking to voters. I didn't hear 'em.

sometimes changes happens pretty fast though! I mean I do remember when Trump really started winning primaries, and then it was just him and Cruz, and when it became clear that Cruz wasn't coming back there was this feeling of "holy shit, we're actually doing this", and it seemed politics in general just turned really toxic and nasty overnight. Trump losing won't undo that but I think the quicker his base turns on him the quicker we can get to a place in US Politics that doesn't completely fucking suck
